UDHAMPUR, Apr 29: Two persons were killed in head-on collision between a motorcycle and a video coach bus while as five persons including three cops sustained injuries in an another accident.

Reports said that two persons were killed when their motorcycle collided head on with a video coach bus bearing registration number JK06-0597 outside MI Room under the jurisdiction of Rehmbal Police Station this evening.

Soon after the accident, the bus driver fled from the spot leaving behind the victims in pool of blood.

On the receipt of information about the accident, a police party from Rehmbal Police Station led by SHO Inspector S S Bloeria rushed to the spot and shifted both the victims to hospital where they were pronounced as brought dead.

Identity of one of them was established as Kirpal Singh of Garhi. Another victim remained unidentified till late this evening.

Police has registered a case in this connection and launched hunt to nab the bus driver.

Meanwhile, five persons including two police personnel and an ex-serviceman suffered injuries when a Maruti van bearing registration number JK02L-0211 skidded off the road and rolled down near Pul Doda this evening.

The ill-fated vehicle was on its way from Pul Doda to Police Post Doda when met with accident. The injured have been identified as Bashir Ahmed, son of Mohd Shafi of Pul Doda, Imran, son of Ayub Sheikh of Kishtwar, Head Constable Lehar Singh, constable Nawaz Ahmed and ex-serviceman Satya Raj, son of Gulab Chand, all the residents of Pul Doda.

Their condition was stated to be out of danger when reports last came in.

First batch of Buda Amarnath yatra to leave on Aug 3

JAMMU, Apr 29: The eight day long annual Buda Amarnath Yatra in Poonch which will begin from August 3 this year is expected to surpass the last year’s record.

This was stated by National convenor, Bajrang Dal (BD), Parkash Sharma while addressing a press conference here, today along with State president of VHP, Dr Rama Kant Dubey, state convenor, BD, Sushill Kumar Sudhan and Nand Kishore Mishra State co- convenor BD.

Mr Sharma said the yatris will reach here on August 1 and on August 2 other rituals and Chari poojan will be performed. The last batch will perform darshan on August 10, he added.

Besides its religious significance, the objective of organizing this yatra is to boost the morale of the Hindus living in remote and far-flung areas of Poonch and Rajouri. Though over one lakh devotees performed the darshan last year it is hoped that number may increase this year, he added.

Mr Sharma, said as the Assembly elections are round the corner this year there is every apprehension that the Yatra may face problems so Government should ensure fool proof security to yatris.

He also made an appeal to people of country to make this yatra a success and defeat the nefarious designs of those who want to create impediments in its way.

PCC Minority Cell for implementation
of package in letter and spirit

JAMMU, Apr 29: Welcoming the package announced by Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh for Kashmiri migrants, the Minority Cell of Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has expressed the hope that the package will be implemented in letter and spirit.

"This is the first measure and substantiative initiative for providing incentive to displaced community for their return and rehabilitation in the Valley", said the general secretary incharge migrants, Chuni Lal Bhat while talking to media persons along with another general secretary of the Cell, H L Pandita and camp representatives Roshan Lal Raina, Krishan Ji Koul and Krishan Lal Khera.

Mr Bhat said though the details of the implementation of the package have not yet been formulated but the Cell is hopeful and confident that all necessary precautions will be taken to ensure that there are no malpractices and the funds allocated are not misappropriated as has happened in past.

He also suggested involvement of community representatives in the process.

He expressed the hope that Prime Minister will also announce increase in the monthly cash relief for the migrants and demanded that prompt and result oriented measures to be taken to meet the unemployment problem.

Expressing apprehension that vested interests may sabotage package, Mr R L Raina urged the Government to be vigilant against them.

Self styled unions bane for employees: JKMEFO

JAMMU, Apr 29: JK Medical Employees Federation Original (JKMEFO) expressed concern over the supposed self-styled medical employees unions and alleged that ill-conceived, unplanned and inconclusive strikes by such unions are giving setback to the morale of employees.

A general body meeting of the federation was held today at Government Medical College Jammu under the chairmanship of S Dharaminder Singh Bhargav. The meeting was attended by large number of employees including pharmacists, X-ray technicians, nurses, class IV employees and safai-karamcharis etc besides president and general secretary of the PHE Employees Association.

While addressing the meeting, Mr Bhargav said that the self-styled leaders of the employees don’t have any idea about basic problems of employees. "They can’t project, negotiate or plead the cause of employees" he said and added that the latter are in fact harming the interest of employees.

Others who addressed the meeting were Paramjeet Singh, RK Sharma, Kuldeep Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Bua Ditta, Mamta Sharma, Jagjeet Kour, Ghani Sham and Sat Pal.

JK Trade Union Congress elects executive body

JAMMU, Apr 29: Jammu and Kashmir Trade Union Congress (JKTUC) in a general body meeting held here today elected its executive committee and decided modalities for the celebration of Labour Day on May 1. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Subash Chander Sharma.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sharma disclosed that to re-elect its executive body the union had conducted elections on April 24 but in the wake of zero opposition from all quarters of the union the managerial body was elected unanimously.

Those who were elected in the governing body included Subash Chander Sharma as president, Deedar Singh as senior vice president, Omkar Nath, Raj Kumar, Vimla Salathia and Kalyan Singh Parihar as vice president, Maharaj Krishan Koul and Veena Bakshi as general secretary, Rajeev Sharma, RK Chadha, Majinder Kumar and Shoukat Ali as secretary.

Meanwhile, Sham Lal Sharma was elected as chief organizer and Deepak Sharma as cashier cum advisor.

JAMMU, Apr 29: National Panthers Party chairman Prof Bhim Singh will be sitting on 24-hour fast on April 30, as a part of ‘Gareeb Bachao Andolan’ of his party at historic venue of Mubarak Mandi.

Immediately after completion of his fast on May 1 at 9 a m, Prof Singh will launch his bare-foot campaign " Gareeb Bachao Andolan" and after passing through various parts of Jammu city, he will conclude his on-foot campaign at Memorial of Martyr students at GGM Science, Canal Road, Jammu. He will be accompanied by a large number of NPP activists and students.

Prof Singh claimed that his party would be launching a decisive battle against injustice, discrimination with the Jammu region and corruption, as refugees, Paharis, unemployed youth, OBCs, STs have been denied justice in the State. NPP will be giving wake up call to the people of Jammu so that they could realise their mistake committed in the past. He said refugees were denied package by Prime Minister and it seems to be some conspiracy against the Jammu region. He said Rs 50 crore anouncement was an insult to those people who can never spare Congress.

The NPP chairman claimed that ‘Gareeb Bachao Andolan’ week would commence from May 1 and spread over the region. He alleged that present Government, both politicians and bureaucrats have been robbing the poor, State exchequer and indulging in committing crimes against innocent people making beggars to pay tax (VAT) on drinking water and the Pithoos at Mata Vaishnodevi pilgrimage are made to pay ‘Jazia’. The Government has failed to control rising prices of essential commodities.

Sikh organisations hold protest against Minister, BOSE

JAMMU, Apr 29: A joint protest demonstration was organised by various Sikh organisations at Satwari Chowk against a chapter in 3rd Class Hindi Book, Saras Bharti Bhag-III and burnt the effigy of Minister of State, Manjit Singh and State Board of School Education (BOSE).

The protestors said that a wrong and misleading story has been published on Page Number 61 of the book about Sixth Guru Hargovind Singh. They alleged that the book was published in Session 2003-04 and still being circulated in the schools.

They blamed Minister of State, Manjit Singh, who was holding the portfolio of education when the book was published and said that being a Sikh Minister the whole responsibility lies on him. "The misleading story has hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community", the protestors further said.

All the Sikh organisations unanimously urged the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to take stern action against the Minister and rectify the book immediately. They also made a clarion call to the Sikh community members to boycott the Minister and teach him a lesson in the elections.

"If the Minister fails to resign, more demonstrations will be organised against him for hurting the sentiments of entire community", they made it clear.

The Sikh organisations which participated in the demonstration were Bhai Kaniya Nishkam Seva Society, Shiromani Youth Akali Dal, Sikh Istri Sudhar Sabha, AISFF, Sikh Naujawan Sabha and Nirbhou Nirver Organisation.

NSUI for entrance based admission in LLB, LLM

JAMMU, Apr 29: A deputation of National Students Union of India (NSUI) today called on Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu (JU), Prof Amitabh Mattoo and demanded entrance based admission in LLB and LLM courses.

The deputation apprised him that merit based admission was depriving Arts Graduates of admission, as Science students and students from private colleges were getting more marks in the qualifying examination. They also submitted a memorandum in this regard to the VC.

Prof Mattoo gave a patient hearing to the deputation and directed the matter to Dean Academic Affairs (DAA). Later, the deputation met DAA, Prof B P S Sehgal, who assured that Deptt of Law will soon bring out a notification in this regard.

The deputationsits included Arjun Singh Pathania, Jammu province president, Behzad Malik, state secretary, Sajjad Ahmed, Unkush Raina, Sumit Kotwal, Rajesh Sharma and Nilanajan Sharma.

Nirdhar Darshan exhibition at GHSS Gandhi Nagar

JAMMU, Apr 29: An exhibition ‘Nirdhar Darshan’ has been organized at Government Higher Secondary School (Boys), Gandhi Nagar from April 27 to 30.

The exhibition was organized by Chief Education Officer Jammu in collaboration with Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Mumbai.

Exhibition has been started to commemorate 150th anniversary of Indian struggle of freedom, 100th anniversary of Shahid Bhagat Singh and 60th year of India’s independence.

The major thrust of the exhibition was to acquaint the students with various aspects of Indian freedom of struggle and to infuse sense of patriotism amongst the students, the future generation of the country. Students of over 35 schools visited the exhibition.

The exhibition was monitored by a committee of Principals led by SRML Higher Secondary School Principal P C Verma.

Clerks’ strike affects normal work in offices

JAMMU, Apr 29: The pen down strike launched by the clerical cadre employees has paralysed normal work in the government offices in the State.

The strike, launched under the banner of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh All Departments Clerical Staff Association today entered the 34th consecutive day today. They are demanding removal of anomalies in the pay grades of junior, senior and head assistants besides junior stenographers and junior statistical assistants.

The central executive body members of the Association addressed agitating employees at various offices here today. They included Ram Kumar Sharma, Rehmat Ullah Malik, R p Sharma, C L Koul, Ravi Singh, Sukhbir Singh, Anil Kumar Mehta, Rakesh Kumar and others. Demonstrations were held outside various Treasuries today.

The leaders criticised the government for causing delay in the redressal of their demand. They said that employees will carry their struggle to the logical conclusion.

Reports from various districts including Srinagar and Leh indicated that strike was complete in all the state offices and the normal work remained badly hit due to strike of clerical cadre.

Kul Hind for 3 townships in Valley

JAMMU, Apr 29: Kul Hind Nove Soan Kashmir Front in a meeting here, today held under the chairmanship of Shadi Lal Pandita demanded that package announced by Prime Minister shoule be implemented in letter and spirit.

In a statement here, today, he also demanded construction of three townships in Valley at district headquarters, payment of compensation for losses suffered, granting employment to 20,000 community youth, removing of encroachments, increase in relief from Rs 4000 to Rs 7000, stepping up the construction of quarters at Jagati and acquiring more land near Jagati for the construction of extra flats.

Youth arrested for theft

POONCH, Apr 29: The police arrested a local youth for the alleged theft of Rs 1.50 lakh at village Khet in Loran area of district Poonch today.

Reports said incident took place in the house of Mohd Farooq at Khet village. The villager had withdrawn money for the marriage of his younger brother from the Bank. As the family had gone to nearby Dhok with cattle, a local youth broke into the three-storey house of Farooq and decamped with cash on the intervening night of April 26 and 27.

SSP Poonch Jagjeet Kumar himself moved to Loran and constituted team which worked out case with in one day. Local youth Tariq Iqbal who was placed under interrogation on suspicion broke down and confessed his guilt. He had concealed money in a pillow at his residence. The money was recovered and youth sent behind the bars.
