CCP meet postponed on differences over steps to check prices

NEW DELHI, Apr 15: Amid sharp differences between ministries of Commerce and Finance over measures to control spiralling steel prices, the government today postponed the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Prices (CCP).

The CCP was scheduled to meet today to delve on measures including imposing an export duty and lowering excise on steel to check prices.

According to sources, the meeting has been postponed as the Finance Ministry is not in favour of reducing excise duty on steel fearing loss of revenue.

The Finance Ministry, sources said, is of the view that duty alone will not be able to check rising prices of steel as domestic prices are largely influenced by the international prices.

There was a proposal from the steel makers to ban export of iron ores to ensure cheaper raw material for domestic production and future expansion.

While pressure is mounting from certain quarters for either increasing the export duty or banning the iron ore shipments, the commerce ministry is against any such move, sources said.

Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath had said last week that the iron ore variety, which is being exported, is not of use to domestic steelmakers and a ban would serve no purpose to contain inflation.

The iron ore prices have seen a sharp rise in the global market, leading to the revision of rate by the domestic miners.

The CCP was scheduled to meet in the backdrop of inflation rate touching a 40-month high of 7.41 per cent, much above the Reserve Bank's target of five per cent. (PTI)

Number of immigration counters at Airport to go up

NEW DELHI, Apr 15: The number of check-in and immigration counters at the Delhi Airport will be increased to deal with the rush of passengers.

The number of check-in counters would be increased from 78 to 100 by June this year, he said.

Hand-baggage X-ray machines at the international terminal have been increased from eight to 12, which would further go up to 16 by June, 2008, Patel said.

Modernisation activities at the Delhi Airport have been rescheduled to implement them in a phased manner to minimise inconvenience to the passengers, he said.

Patel also informed that among the steps taken to avoid long queues due to the ongoing upgradation work at the airport are relocating airline offices outside the International Terminal building and putting up new flight information display boards.

An agency has been deployed at the international terminal to guide the passengers to the respective check-in counters. (PTI)

Nearly 1000 foreign pilots working with Indian airlines

NEW DELHI, Apr 15: Faced with an acute shortage of trained pilots, various airlines have engaged nearly 1,000 foreign pilots, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

However, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has advised all scheduled, non-scheduled and general aviation operators to submit their plan to phase out foreign pilots and replace them by trained Indian pilots, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel said in a written reply.

As per the plan submitted by the operators, all the foreign pilots are likely to be repatriated in approximately five years time, he said.

Patel said various scheduled airlines have engaged 944 foreign pilots in order to bridge the gap between demand and availability of pilots.

The government has also taken various steps to reduce the gap between demand and supply of skilled Indian pilots. These include conditionally increasing the age-limit to 65 years for pilots, upgradation and modernisation of training infrastructure of the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi to enhance training capacity from 40 to 100 pilots per year.

Apart from this steps are also being taken to set up a world class flying training institute at Gondia, Maharashtra for training 100 cadets and assistance to flying clubs by allocating trainer aircraft through the DGCA and Aero Club of India, he said. (PTI)

Music directors facing the music

NEW DELHI, Apr 15: It’s no longer the monopoly of themes, storylines or titles of Bollywood flicks that hog the headlines. Bollywood music directors too are in the news many times for wrong reasons, the latest being the ‘Krazzy4’ case.

If it was the "Choli ke peeche kya hain" song that had the judiciary intervening, the use of the title "Sholay" too reached the corridors of courts for justice, along with plagarism which is as old as the industry, but now it is the increasing boldness in use of suggestive words and slang that for sure will keep Bollywood music in the limelight for reasons other than melody, feel experts.

The lingo of Indian music industry is changing. While this new phraseology is inevitable, there is a line of difference between being classy and crass, feels expert.

While words like ‘mirchi’, ‘bidi’, ‘daru’ etc are being used, suggestive words like ‘kiss me’, ‘touch me’, ‘craving for your body’ etc are also being extensively used nowadays in Bollywood music, especially in item songs.

"There is a clear demarcation between what is contemporary and what’s crass. I’m all for experimentation but certainly there should be no allowances for undermining the diginity of a language. If the intent itself is wrong or undiginfied then that will get reflected in the language the lyrics the expressions and the entire song," says Prasoon Joshi, lyricist of ‘Fanna’, ‘Rang de Basanti’ and ‘Taare Zameen pe.’

Agrees lyricist Neelesh Misra. "Mukhdas’ or the opening verses are sometimes peppered with such words to make them catchy-and, perhaps, because there might be a view that shock value might work better for the song," he says.

Ehasan of Shankar-Eshan-Loy trio says, "In item songs anything goes so people make use of different catchy and provocative words at times to catch the attention of the audience but still I feel it depends on the usage," he says.

Pyarellal of Lakshmikant-Pyarellal, who composed the song, "Choli ke Peeche kya he" in ‘Khalnayak’ says, "At times such provocative music or lyrics are being used in a song because the character or the script might demand so. A film is a director’s baby, he is the person who knows about the subject. For example in ‘Khalnayak’, the character of Sanjay Dutt was very cheap and Subhashji felt it needed such lyrics and composition and so we did the song accordingly."

Moreover along with suggestive words shockingly even some regional slangs are now making its way into the Bollywood lexicon.

Songs like "Ganpat chal daru la" from ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’, "Dum Laga" from ‘Dil Dosti Etc’ and the background score of ‘One two three’ are some examples were certain offensive words were used.

"It is important to know the line which divides cheap from classy. It is all about being intelliegnt without sounding crass. I feel by making such compositions they are actually ruining the song, which otherwise would have been greater hits," says Pritam, the composer of ‘Metro,’ ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Race.’

Neelesh Misra says, "Even if such words are not often offensive as in offending people on racial or religious grounds, they are certainly tasteless in many songs."

But are such offensive words unavoidable? "It is certainly not unavoidable. A bad song never writes itself. We write it. And we have the choice of not writing it," says Misra.

"It depends on the execution of the song, how one uses it that matters. Even in the past in songs like jaane do na... from ‘Sagaar’, the music had sexual overtones but they were executed in such a way that you do not feel cheap," says Pritam.

"There is nothing wrong in being experimental but It should be proper used. For example, we have given music in Don, but there was nothing provocative or offensive in that," says Ehasan. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, Apr 15: Prices of select pulses drifted in the range of Rs 50 and Rs 100 a quintal on the wholesale pulses market today largely on the back of increased offerings by stockists against reduced demand from local parties.

A weak trend was witnessed in gram in future trading at commodity exchanges where the prices fell by 4 per cent to hit downslide circuit filter.

Marketmen said reports of raids on hoarders by the authorities, which triggered selling by stockists, also helped prices to come down.

CERC directs UPPCL to clear outstanding dues

NEW DELHI, Apr 15: The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission has ordered UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) to clear the outstanding dues in six installments of Rs 128 crore per month starting from May 2008 for over-drawing from the inter-state grid.

This is in addition to the timely payment of current dues, if any, on account of unscheduled interchange (UI). If UPPCL fails to comply with the orders, the Commission may be constrained to direct the Northern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (NRLDC) to curtail the power supply without further proceedings, the power regulator said in a release.

Expressing the disappointment with the conduct of UPPCL and the commission has asked the NRLDC to keep it informed about the payment status of UPPCL into the UI pool account.

Over the last six months, UPPCL paid a total UI amount of Rs 190 crore, while the charges for over-drawing during the same period were Rs 360 crore. The principal amount overdue as on March 31, 2008 is Rs 767 crore.

For the recovery of long standing UI dues, which the state utilities are unable to liquidate, the commission had suggested appropriation from the Central Plan Assistance in order to avoid physical curtailment of power to a state.

Since the suggestion has not yet been accepted, therefore the Commission has no alternative but to revert to physical curtailment of supply even if it jeopardises grid security, it said.

Allowing continued UI payment default would only encourage total anarchy in grid operation, which the commission cannot allow, the body said. (PTI)
