Ranbir canal
Sir,
One of great
landmark in Jammu, the Ranbir Canal is life line
of Jammu. Water is always released in this canal
on 13th April on the day of Baisakhi. This year
due to dry weather farmers need water for
irrigation for the wheat crop. So to make water
available for irrigation the Government has
advanced the date of release of water in the
canal by a week. Now as per the news report
published in this paper water will be released on
6th April.
In this context I
would like to say that the Ranbir Canal consists
of a huge system of distributaries. These
distributeries carry water to different areas
where farmers use the water for irrigation. Many
distributaries are still full of filth and
polybags. They have not yet been cleared of the
site. To elucidate the point. I would like to
point out the condition of Talab Tillo
distributary. This distributary starts from
Kailash Nagar and passes through Talab Tillo and
proceeds towards Gole Gujral. Any body who passes
through the area can see that this channel is
full of silt and filth . If water is released on
6th April then the flow of water through this
distributary will be obstructed due to large
quantity of silt etc. .
The better option
in this regard is to clean up this distributaries
of this kind so that a large quantity of water
flows through it. Many culverts are also built on
this distributory which makes it a closed canal
than a open canal. These culverts also impair the
flow of water. Besides there is a possibility of
developing the strip of land where ever available
on this distributary with shrubs and grass
patches. This way the road and the distributry
will look beautiful.

Introduce traffic lights
Sir,
Major growth and
expansion has taken place in the Jammu city in
the last two decades. The vehicular traffic on
the roads is increasing day by day in the city.
New brands and models of vehicles are rolled out
every other day. Greater purchasing power, easy
financing and carefree maintenance have made use
of these vehicles easy and affordable. This has
lead to a situation of having chaos on already
narrow roads. During peak hours traffic usually
runs on a snail's pace.
The problem is
more serious at a few important intersections on
B.C Road viz Bikram Chowk, Gandhi Nagar, Rehari
Chungi and Bakshi Nagar. The vehicles are seen
jostling with one another for every inch of space
on the already crowded roads. The VIP vehicles
with beacon lights always search for a preference
and create a situation of panic. Sometimes
injuries have happened to two wheeler riders with
damage to their vehicles. Though the traffic
policemen on these intersections are doing an
excellent job in smooth running of traffic but
installation of traffic lights would have been
better in many ways. First of all, one would know
the waiting period so that the vehicle engine is
switched off and lot of fuel is saved. Second,
the services of surplus traffic policemen can be
utilized elsewhere. And last but not the least,
it gives the city a modern look. Government is
serious about the problems of the people and
tries to redress them as quickly as possible. We
hope, Government will take notice of this problem
and proper action is taken in the interest of
people.
