Three-day international conference on Canadian
Studies at JU from today

JAMMU, Feb 22: Jammu University is hosting a three-day international conference on Canadian Studies from tomorrow.

Around 200 delegates from different parts of India as well as abroad are attending the conference, which is being organised by the Indian Association for Canadian Studies and Centre for New Literature, Jammu University.

This is XXIII International Conference on Canadian Studies and its theme is ‘Cosmopolitanism: Canada and India’.

This was informed by JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo while addressing a news conference on the campus, here today.

"The conference aims to address itself to the larger questions of cosmopolitanism under the dynamics of new theoretical model on which all economic development, business, technological as well as socio-political models have begun to alter," he said.

Comparing cosmopolitanisms of India and Canada, Prof Mattoo opined that both the countries have common interests and common values such as commitment to democracy, multiculturalism etc. "The conference will deliberate upon these issues and hopefully enhance better understanding on the subject," he added.

Prof Posh Charak, Director of the Centre for New Literature, JU, who accompanied Vice-Chancellor in the news conference, informed that the inaugural as well as valedictory of the conference would be graced by Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha while David Malone, the High Commissioner of Cananda in India, would be the chief guest.

The academic programme of the conference will consist of paper presentation, discussion forums, poster presentation and students’ sessions, she added.

On the occasion, the organisers also circulated list of foreigners attending the conference, who also included scholars from United Kingdom, besides Canada.

Governor appreciates Wadoo for discovering largest Chinar

JAMMU, Feb 22: Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S. K. Sinha has appreciated Mr. M. S. Wadoo for discovering world’s largest and oldest Chinar at Chattergam-Chadoora near Srinagar.

Mr. Wadoo author of 11 books on trees and plants of Jammu and Kashmir today presented the Governor his recent book "The trees of our Heritage" at Rajbhavan. The book is high value research work on trees and forests of Jammu and Kashmir.

Evincing great interest in the high class research work of Mr. Wadoo, presented in the book, Mr. Sinha asked various questions on growth age and origin of Chinar tree to Mr. Wadoo. He said Chinar has basically brought to Kashmir from Greece but has assumed the Persian name Chinar, though in Kashmir, it is known as Bune. He said it can live upto 900 years if atmosphere and nurturing is conduce. He said reference of ‘Bune’ is in "Lal Wakhs" which determining that Chinar existed in Kashmir before Mugals.

Explaining his research profile on trees of J&K, Mr. Wadoo told Governor that he has traveled thousands of miles to ascertain, identify and establish largest and oldest Chinar of the world at Chattergam in the mosque area of Syed Qasim Shah having the girth of 31.85 meters at ground level and 14.78 at breast height.

Earlier, a Chinar tree at Bijbehara with ground level girth of 19.70 meters and breast height girth of 13.30 meters was considered largest Chinar tree before the discovery of Mr. Wadoo.

Mr. Wadoo told Governor that his research work compiled in a book "the trees of our heritage" include information on various growing aspects of Deodar, Bren, Willows and poplars.

Roshni has surpassed Tiller Act: Azad

JAMMU, Feb 22: Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad while addressing district and block presidents of Congress party of Jammu province here today said that the revolutionary Roshni Act passed under Congress-led Government has far-reaching effects and it has gone beyond the expectations of the people particularly farmers.

Mr. Azad said that free ownership rights of 16.60 lakh kanals of State land costing Rs. 20,000 crore are being given to poor farmers with a definite goal to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture production and remove uncertainty from the minds of farmers for ever.

Referring to the role of late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah being pioneer of land reforms act in the state particularly revolutionary land to tillers act of 1950, Mr. Azad said that present Congress-led Government has even surpassed all previous acts taken in the history of agriculture reforms. He said at the same time, government through the same Roshni Act will be able to retrieve rupees thousands of crores from those who have illegally encroached in various parts of Jammu and Srinagar cities and are using the land for commercial and non-agricultural purposes.

He said the act has been envisaged in such a manner so that nobody is able to cheat the government but actual agriculture character and actual tilling of the land by concerned persons is proved by the beneficiaries with full satisfaction of concerned authorities. He said by making binding beneficiary not to transfer the land or change its use, the Roshni Act has become the source of benefit particularly to the poor farmers and tillers of the land.

Pradesh Congress Committee President and Minister for School Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Minister for CAPD Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Minister for Power Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for R&B Gulchain Singh Charak, Minister for Rural Development Jugal Kishore Sharma, Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports Babu Singh, Minister of State for Higher Education Aijaz Ahmad Khan, Minister of State for Industries Dr. Romesh Chander Sharma, Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation Ch. Manmohan Singh and Vice Chairman Pahari Board Shabir Ahmad Khan also attended the meeting.

Mr. Azad advised district and block presidents of Congress to go into the field and gear up their own machinery with involvement of people in general so that nobody is allowed to misuse the provisions of the act. He advised them to help poor farmers who are in physical possession of the land to fill up their forms and get the land actually transferred in records in their names. He hoped that they will come out from their areas and work side by side alongwith the people and educate them about all steps which have been taken by present government for their benefit.

Mr. Azad said that creation of eight new districts, three sub-divisions and 12 tehsils was not made on any recommendation of any commission or demand of any political party but keeping in mind that creation of these districts will accelerate pace of development in all nooks and corners of the state.

Chief Minister said that government has launched road connectivity, healthcare and creation of education infrastructure programme at village, block, tehsil, district and divisional levels and bring education to the level of college and university at the doorsteps of the people across the state. He said that a network of industrial training institutes has been established throughout the State.

Canadian envoys call on Governor

JAMMU, Feb 22: Canadian Ambassador in India, David Malone and the Secretary Public Affairs in the Canadian High Commission, Ghislain Chaput called on Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha here this evening.

The envoys discussed with the Governor subjects of mutual interest and the meeting lasted for about an hour.

The envoys are currently on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

‘Action to be taken against those not filing IT returns’

JAMMU, Feb 22: Income Tax Commissioner J&K Virendra Singh today said that persons not filing Income Tax returns are on the watch list of the Department and anybody failed to fulfill this legal obligation will be sternly dealt with.

"As per provisions of Section 139(1) of IT Act, 1961, every person whose income during the previous year exceeded the maximum amount, which is chargeable to Income Tax, is required to furnish return of income on or before the prescribed due date", the Commission said, adding failure on the part of such persons make them liable for imposition of penalty of Rs 5000 under Section 271-F of the IT Act, 1961.

It has been observed that large number of persons, whose income was taxable and liable to file their returns of income by July 31, 2006 or by October 31, 2006, have not filed the same for the assessment year 2006-07 relevant to financial year ending on March 31, 2006, the Commissioner further said.

"Such defaulting assesses are liable for levy of penalty in case they fail to file returns of income even by March 31, 2007", he made it clear and added that all such assesses whose income for the year ended on March 31, 2006 was taxable but have not yet filed their returns of income must file the same before March 31, 2007 to avoid action against them.

He further said: "It is also mandatory for an assessee to have Permanent Account Number (PAN) for payment of Income Tax as well as for filing of returns. Those accesses who are required to file their returns of income but have not yet obtained PAN should apply for the same without any delay".

In case of any clarification or assistance, the assesses of Jammu division except districts of Kathua and Udhampur can approach Rajesh Raina, ITO (Tech) Jammu. The assesses of entire Kashmir valley can approach Gulzarin Mushtaq, ITO Ward-2 Srinagar while the assesses of Udhampur and Kathua can contact ITOs Amit Kumar and Kanv Bali.

The Commissioner has advised the assesses not to wait till last minute to file their returns.

HC directs PHE to pay wages to workers

JAMMU, Feb 22: Justice Nirmal Singh of the State High Court Jammu wing in a writ petition filed by the workers engaged by PHE for execution a water supply scheme executed at the instance of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Katra, has directed PHE to pay the wages to the petitioners within two months. However, if the funds are not provided by SMVDSB, then they are at liberty to discontinue the scheme, it was ordered.

The petitioners were engaged to execute scheme to lift three lakh gallons of water per day (in three stages of pumping) from tube well at village Kotli. The scheme was take up in the month of October 2002 and was to be completed in May, 2005 and was to be funded by SMVDSB.

In the objections Additional Advocate General SC Gupta appearing for the PHE Department, submitted that water supply scheme SIAL DABRI was framed and executed at the instance of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. The scheme comprises three stages including lifting of water to holy shrine. The casual labourers were deployed at the request of the officers of the Shrine Board and their wages were paid out of fund provided by the Shrine Board. The scheme was still being executed. On the other hand Sr. Advocate UK Jalali appearing for the Shrine Board submitted that another scheme was being executed by the Board known as Trikuta Hill Forestation Project and the workers have been disengaged due to winding up the project. They directed the Xen PHE Udhampur to disengage the individuals engaged. The workers who have been engaged by the PHE and engage worker who had been disengaged from the forestation project, Jalali further submitted that Shrine Board was not a party when the order of the court was passed in which the court directed the respondents not to disengage the petitioners and pay them according to the rule.

Justice Nirmal Singh after hearing all sides observed that the Chief Executive Officer Shrine Board cannot interfere in the internal working of the PHE, therefore, the order of disengagement of workers cannot sustain and accordingly quashed with the direction to the PHE department to pay the wages to the workers/petitioners within two months. If the funds are not provided by the Shrine Board, then PHE is at liberty to discontinue the scheme, it was ordered.

Irrigation employees protest, stage dharna

JAMMU, Feb 22: Employees and Workers of Mechanical Irrigation department under the banner of J&K Mechanical Irrigation Government Employees Union Jammu, held protest dharna in Irrigation complex, on Canal Road to focus the attention of State Government towards their plight here today.

The employees held massive demonstration in the Irrigation complex and shouted slogans against the higher authorities. They were drawing the attention of the concerned Irrigation authorities towards the genuine and long pending demands of the workers. It was followed by a day long dharna of the employees, outside the office of Chief Engineer.

Various speakers addressed the gathering. Their main demands included change in the designation of Helpers as Pump Operators and holding of immediate DPC meeting to clear all pending promotions. President of the organisation Krishan Singh Bahu was leading the agitation.

State president of J&K National Trade Union Front Mohd Gafoor Dar while addressing the protesting employees stressed upon the Irrigation authorities to settle the genuine demands of the agitating workers. Mr Dar said that any further delay will compel the employees to intensify struggle.

Prominent among others who addressed the workers include- Lal Chand, Ram Lal, Devi Dass and Shiv Nath.

 

MTA lists demands, urges Govt to concede them

JAMMU, Feb 22: Medical Teachers Association (MTA) of Government Medical College, Jammu held a meeting today in which demands submitted to the Government for consideration were discussed.

The demands listed by the MTA include removal of stagnation in promotion of faculty by holding DPC twice a year and implementation of MCI guidelines for promotions, sanctioning pay grades on pattern of AIIMS/SKIMS, increase in retirement age of faculty of Medical Colleges of the State to 62 on the pattern of Centre and other States in view of shortage of doctors and availability of better infrastructure for research work, a MTA release issued by Dr Bhupesh Khajuria, MTA press secretary, said.

The meeting was attended among others by Dr Dara Singh, president MTA, Dr Tariq Azad, vice president, Dr Dinesh Kumar, general secretary, Dr Bhupesh Khajuria, press secretary, Dr Kuldeep Singh, joint secretary and Dr Jagdish Thappa.

The MTA appealed to Health and Medical Education Minister Mangat Ram Sharma and Secretary Health and Medical Education K B Jandial to concede their demands.

Harshdev flays inspection of civil works by SHOs

JAMMU, Feb 22: Former Minister and National Panthers Party MLA from Ramnagar, Harshdev Singh has taken strong exception to an order issued by district administration in Udhampur seeking physical verification by SHOs of concerned police station on the works executed under revalidated Tribal Sub Plan in Udhampur district.

In a statement, Mr Singh quoted an order of Udhampur district administration which has been issued vide No. DDCU/44/2006-07/8284-92 in which it has been stated that nine departments would furnish authenticated documents for physical verification of work to SHOs of concerned police stations.

The departments, whose work the SHOs had been asked to investigate, include Animal Husbandry, Sheep Husbandry, Social Welfare, ITI (Technical Education), PHE, Agriculture, Soil Conservation, Rural Development and Horticulture.

"This is nothing but a mockery of civil administration which now has been relying on the information of police stations to verify execution of work", Mr Singh said, adding the example of "Andher Nagri Chopat Raja" perfectly fits on the order.

He pointed out that this was for the first time that works executed by civil departments are being examined by the SHOs. This is nothing but ridiculous, he said and demanded an inquiry into the order.

Improved civic facilities for Poonch demanded

POONCH, Feb 22: District Congress Committee president Zaffar Ullah Azad, president Municipal Committee Poonch S Rajinder Singh and Ch Aushaq Hussain, block president of Congress for Poonch have demanded uninterrupted electric supply, drinking water and providing sufficient funds for MCP.

In a joint statement issued here today the leaders said besides above said demands the other issues confronting the people of the district pertained to road connectivity, telecommunication and medicare facilities. The Congress leaders also demanded adjustment of Physical Education Teachers of Poonch district, who have been agitating since long.

JAMMU, Feb 22: After meeting Ministers of Finance , Social Welfare, Agriculture, R&B, Housing and Urban Development and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and various MLAs, executive body members of Rehbar-e-Taleem Teachers Forum today called on Minister for Education Peerzada Mohd Sayeed.

The ReTs, led by Forum chairman Gazi Abdul Aziz, apprised the Minister of their demands and the assurance given by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. The minister informed ReTs that the Government was actively considering their demands as per Chief Minister’s assurance.

Later a meeting of the executive members was held wherein state secretary Najam Jafri said that the Forum would soon approach Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for seeking his availability to preside over a ReTs’ convention.

Mangat inaugurates photo exhibition

Jammu, Feb 22 : Minister for Health and Medical Education Mangat Ram Sharma inaugurated a rare photo exhibition organized by Funkar Cultural Organization Kashmir at Kala Kender.

Chief Secretary C. Phunsog, Chairman Public Service Commission M. S. Pandita and other intellectuals, writers, prominent citizens were present on the occasion.

Photographs of bridges, buildings, personalities, nature, and heritage places sanctum sanctorum, shrines temples and on vast ranging eventful events marked the exhibition.

Visitors and VIPs evinced keen interest in the artistic camera work of Afaq Rasool Gadda, a young and budding photo artist.

The event was solo attempt of Mr. Gadda who has already held various such exhibitions at state and national levels and received appreciation for his skillfull work.

Mr. Sharma on the occasion said that photographs preserve and explain rich cultural heritage, architecture building plans, structures, personalities and natural beauty for generation to come. He said ‘photographs and visuals are speaking monuments and hide in them are details of important historical events’.

Favouring the concept of organizing such exhibitions he said these events provide opportunity to both young and experienced artists to introduce their works for public information and education.

Chief Secretary C. Phunsog highlighted the importance of showcasing budding talent of the state. He said photographs exhibited in the exhibition speaks high of the technical expertise of the artist and provide vast information to the viewers.

BJP rejects CM’s claim of giving more than promised

JAMMU, Feb 22: State BJP general secretary Shamsher Singh Manhas has rejected the reported claim of the Chief Minister that Government has not only fulfilled the promises in the Congress manifesto and the CMP but provided to the people beyond that.

Manhas also termed as farce the creation of new district, sub-divisions and tehsils and held that sheer discrimination has been done with Jammu province.

Mr Manhas said he has always advocated that no discrimination be done with people of Jammu region be it in any sphere as Jammu has always been given lesser share as compared to Kashmir.

He again stated that it was the BJP which had demanded amendment in Roshni Act, but now the Chief Minister was describing it as an achievement of Congress. He said the Roshni Act infact has been brought to help politicians, bureaucrats and land mafia.

Billawar Zila Andolan holds one day convention

BILLAWAR, Feb 22: Billawar Zila Andolan organised one day convention at Pallan in tehsil Billawar in which a large number of people participated.

Senior leader of Andolan Hari Chand Jalmeria Advocate said that the successive Governments have not done justice with the people of Billawar, Basohli and Bani areas which have geographical dimension ranging 150x 200 kilometers.

He said the areas falling under the zone comprise of from snow bound peaks to warm climatic area and the proposed district touches Bhadarwah in the North to the plains of Kathua in south and possess vast tourism potential.

He added further that two degree colleges opened at Billawar and Basohli after decades of struggle have neither buildings, nor science subjects. He asserted that the development of the area was only possible if it was accorded a district status. Various other issues were raised in the said convention which was presided over by Retired Sessions Judge B D Thakur and the proceedings conducted by Ram Dhan Lalotra.

Others who addressed included P N Mansotra, Dr Dya Nand Sharma,Master Mohan Lal Verma, Puran Singh Bhadwal, Prem Singh Bhadwal, Capt Krishan Singh, Jatinder Singh Bhadwal Advocate, Rattan Chand, Akhtar Ali, Sarup Chand Gupta, Rattan Singh, Mahel Singh and Dev Raj.

The convention demanded from the Azad led Government to create Billawar District without further delay and also begin speedy development of the area in question.

Ousted Excise & Commercial Tax
employees to continue protest

JAMMU, Feb 22: Despite claiming that Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has assured to give a positive response to their demand, ousted class-IV employees of the Excise and Commercial Tax Department announced to continue their ongoing protest till a formal order for their re-absorption in the Department is issued by the Government.

"Our peaceful protest will continue till all the ousted employees are absorbed by the State Government even as we have full faith in our Chief Minister and his promise," said Adil Rashid Khan, president of All J&K Excise and Commercial Tax (C-IV) Government (Ousted) Employees Association, while talking to media persons, here today.

It may be mentioned here that the ousted employees are already protesting against termination of their services and demanding re-absorption in the Department.

Mr Khan claimed that the Chief Minister during his yesterday meeting with the leaders of All J&K Government Employees Joint Action Committee, described the demand of ousted employees as most genuine and he also directed his Principal Secretary to bring a report in this regard for a positive action.

"We appreciate the Chief Minister for his positive response to our demand and we hope that on humanitarian ground, Mr Azad would soon issue a formal order for absorption and regularisation of all the ousted employees," he said.

Some leaders of Employees Joint Action Committee, including G L Chanda, S S Bakshi, Nazir Ahmed Bhat, Shamim Minto and Surinder Sharma of Commercial Taxes, were also present in the press conference.

Jammu, Feb 22 : Minister for Education, Science and Information Technology Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed has said that Government is for blending academics and job oriented courses in schools to suit present day market demands.

Minister was speaking at the annual day functions of Ranbir Higher Secondary School and Mubarak Mandi Girls Higher Secondary School here today. Both these schools have the distinction of being oldest institutions in the city of Temples

Minister said with the massive expansion of educational network, 88 percent population of the state has been provided primary educational facility within one-kilometer distance. While the left eight percent have to walk two kilometers to attend their classes. He however, said that despite having a massive education network, state is still far behind from rest of the India with only 55 percent literacy rate which the Government has targeted to bring up to 100%.

Regretting the set back that education sector suffered over seventeen years of disturbance, he said while the expansion part is almost complete, "our efforts are now directed towards consolidation of infrastructure and streamlining the existing system to suit present day demands".

Minister later distributed prizes among the students who had distinguished in academics and other activities during last academic session.

Jain inaugurates Youth Red Cross unit

JAMMU, Feb 22: Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Promod Jain inaugurated a unit of Youth Red Cross comprising 60 volunteers from Govt College for women Parade ground here today.

The unit was screened by a committee of the district Red Cross Society. Mr Jain while speaking on the occasion complimented the Red Cross officials for their initiative and having a unique unit of volunteers. He said youth’s representation was a substantial part of membership of Red Cross for its humanitarian commitment. Young volunteers can make a significant contribution in meeting the demand of most vulnerable people.

He asked the Secretary Red Cross Jammu branch Dinesh Gupta to create a work force of nearly 5000 youth volunteers and assured for all possible cooperation and support.

Earlier Mr Gupta briefed the gathering about the activities of the Red Cross Society. Dr Muzaffar Sayed, Treasurer of J&K state branch of the IRCR also spoke on the occasion, besides Dr Shashi Koul Principal of the College and Mahesh Gupta, Member incharge YRC for district Jammu branch.

Govt committed to enrich tourist infrastructure: Dilawar

Jammu, Feb 22 : Asserting the meadows of gold Sonamarg would be developed as a major tourist destination after Gulmarg and Pahalgam, the Minister for Tourism, Mohammad Dilawar Mir today called upon the concerned Chief Executive Officers of various Development Authorities to gear up men and machinery to develop basic tourist infrastructure in respective areas.

The Minister was speaking at a high-level review meeting to take stock of progress on various development Authorities in the respective areas.

Secretary Tourism Nayeem Akhter, Director Tourism Kashmir F. A. Shah, Director Tourism Jammu Ajay Khajuria, Chief Executive Officers of various Development Authorities were present in the meeting. He said grants for various development authorities for the current year should be utilized in full and progress in this regard will be reflected in APR’s.

It was informed that Rs. 1.50 crore are being utilized in Bhadarwah for construction of Tourist Reception Centre and a resort place at Ghatha where recreation park, ponds and tourist hut would be constructed for the convenience of visitors.

The Minister asked the concerned to establish viability for introducing River Rafting in Bhadarwah.

While reviewing progress of Development Authority Yusmarg, it was revealed that a recreation park, Yusmarg Club, pedestrian mall and construction of tourist huts would be undertaken from the current year. Fencing of the existing park adjacent to water reservoir would also be done in first priority.

Progress on development works related to tourism infrastructure at Mansar was also reviewed in detail.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister called for exploring viable public-private collaborations for developing basic tourism infrastructure of international standard adding that there is an expectation of a great flow of foreign tourists to state in coming days. He said government is starting a vigorous campaign with in and outside the state to attract tourists in bulk towards Jammu and Kashmir.

Medical employees’ deputation meets Director Health

JAMMU, Feb 22: A deputation of Medical employees of various categories met the Director Health Services Dr Jasbir Singh here today and apprised him of their problems.

Darminder Singh Bhargav, president of the JK Medical Employees Federation was leading the deputation. The participants in the meeting raised various issues before the Director which include, clearance of pending DPC of class IV employees, Pharmacists categories, SFWs, DMOs, Assistant Entomologists and CHOs. They also demanded grant of Field TA of Rs 1000 per month to the supervisory staff, preparation of seniority list and filling up of vacant posts in the department.

Dr Jasbir listened to the demands patiently and assured that their genuine demands will be looked into. Those who accompanied deputation include-Parmajit Singh, Lokesh Raj Digra, Rehamdin, Kulwant Singh, Mohd Hussain Malik, Bikram Singh and Mohd Latif.

Unemployed engineers hold demonstration

SRINAGAR, Feb 22: All J&K Unemployed Engineers Association today took out a rally in the city in support of their demands.

The unemployed engineers gathered at Partap Park and took out a rally which after passing through different areas culminated at Lal Chowk Srinagar.

The agitating engineers said that Government had announced that unemployed engineers will be adopted as Rehber-e-Tameerat. But till today the announcement has not been translated into promise.

"We have also reminded the Chief Minister and Minister for Labour and Employment of the announcement a number of times but all in vain", they regretted and said that due to delay in translating promise into reality the unemployed engineers were on the verge of crossing the upper age limit bar.

They warned to intensify agitation if their demand was not conceded by the Government at the earliest.

PCC Minority Deptt elects unit for Rajouri district

RAJOURI, Feb 22: Chairman of Pradesh Congress Committee’s Minority Department, S Arvinder Singh Micky, elected unit for Rajouri district on the directions of AICC, New Delhi with Mohd Sayeed Qureshi as chairman.

The vice-chairmen elected on the occasion included Kuldeep Kumar, Qazi Khalleq Ahmed Qureshi, Ashiq Hussain Shaha and Shafi Kamlak. Ghulam Sarwar Shah was made convenor.

Besides a 53 member advisory committee was also constituted giving representation to all the areas of Rajouri district.

LPEF holds rally at PHE division Kathua

KATHUA, Feb 22: A rally and demonstration was held outside PHE Division office by departmental employees under the banner of Low Paid Employees Federation which was presided over by Narain Singh.

The speakers demanded that the community participation workers be paid at the rate of Rs 2100 per month instead of Rs 500, to save them from hardships. Other demands pertained to regularization of daily wagers engaged after 1994, payment of wage arrears, implementation of SRO 149 in respect of ITI and non-ITI matriculate employees and revision of minimum wage to Rs 100 per day.

District president of LPEF Kabla Singh, Ishwar Dass Sangra, Dilawar, Bhagwan Dass, Amar Nath, Rajkumar, Irshad Ahmed and Suraj Bhushan also spoke.

District status for Zanskar demanded

JAMMU, Feb 22: A delegation led by president Zanskar Buddhist Association president Tundup Phunsok, All Gonpa Association Zanskar, Tsewang Sandup and president All Zanskar Students Union Stanzin as also KAHDC councillor Sonam Stobgais met Health Minister Mangat Ram Sharma and apprised him of the problems of Zanskar area.

Their demands pertained to separate Zanskar Assembly constituency; District status for Zanskar; increase of additional two councillors for Zanskar to KAHDC, provision of Serai at Kargil; Construction of airport; and Helicopter service from Leh to Zanskar.

The Minister gave them a patient hearing and assured a better deal.

CAPD to provide addl quota of 10 lt kerosene

JAMMU, Feb 22: Department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) has decided to provide additional quota of 10 litres of kerosene oil per month to the consumers in Jammu city.

A spokesman of the department said that CAPD had decided to provide 5 litres of kerosene oil per ration card every month. But in view of the demand and also adequate supplies now available with the department after keeping strict check on pilferage, it was decided to provide additional ten litres of kerosene oil per ration card till the supplies are properly ensured through fresh outlets. He said these supplies are being ensured at present through mobile vans/ tankers.
