Board satisfied with replies given by Tendulkar, Yuvraj

NEW DELHI, Apr 15: The BCCI today said it was satisfied with the explanation of Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh but issued a warning to all the players against speaking to the media directly in the future.

The board said it had gone through the letters of the two players in reply to the show cause notices issued to them on their remarks on Greg Chappell and would consider the matter as closed.

"We have received the replies of Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh. The replies are satisfactory and the chapter is closed now," BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah told reporters in Rajkot.

"If in future any player speaks to the media, he will be given notice by the board. Every player should remember that the game is more important than individuals," he said.

BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla also said that the board would treat the matter as closed.

"We have received the replies of Tendulkar and Yuvraj. We have gone through their letters and we are satisfied with the explanation. We will treat the matter as closed," he said.

Asked whether the two players had apologised, Shukla said that he would not divulge the contents of the letters.

The BCCI, in its working committee meeting on April 7, had decided to issue show cause notices to Tendulkar and his teammate Yuvraj for breaching the board’s code of conduct by making comments in the media on coach Chappell.

The notices to both players with a seven-day deadline were sent on April 9. Tendulkar had criticised Chappell for questioning his attitude in an interview after India’s disastrous World Cup campaign while Yuvraj had backed Tendulkar’s views, which had led to a furore.

Regarding the security concerns for the Indian team for the forthcoming Bangladesh tour, Shah said "BCCI has discussed about the security of the players in Bangladesh and we have been assured about that.

"But if required we will ask the Indian Government and send a security team to Bangladesh. And if need be commandos also will be sent," he said. (PTI)

Kiwis join Australia in semis

ST GEORGE’S (Grenada), Apr 15: New Zealand booked a place in the semi-finals with a hard-earned five-wicket win against a sloppy South Africa in Saturday’s super eight match of the Cricket World Cup.

Thanks to New Zealand’s win, Sri Lanka also booked a semifinal berth and one more team would join them to complete the line-up after Tuesday’s England-South Africa match, a virtual quarterfinal.

New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming won an important toss which enabled him to insert South Africa on a sub-standard pitch and restrict them to 193 for six. The Kiwis then saw through the target in the 49th over in the afternoon.

New Zealand thus became the second team, after Australia, to put themselves in the last four. They now have 10 points from six games while Australia are on top with same points from just five games.

South Africa, on the other hand, are teetering on the point of elimination and now face a must-win situation against England in Barbados.

Fleming himself played a critical hand of 50 in the chase and with Scott Styris (56) playing a characteristic role, the win was never in doubt.

South Africa themselves were around to offer a helping hand, dropping both Fleming and Styris at critical stages of the match.

Styris, when on four, was put down by Ashwell Prince at short midwicket and then Fleming had two large doses of luck coming his way. He was let off on 24 by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and then Herschelle Gibbs let go a chance at point when the left-hander was on 36.

New Zealand lost two early wickets when Peter Fulton (16) and Ross Taylor (10) fell by 42 runs in the 13th over. Fulton thick edged a drive in the slips off Makhaya Ntini and Taylor was ruled out leg before off Andre Nel.

A tale of dropped catches followed and Fleming and Styris were not the ones to let the opportunity go by. (PTI)
