Remembering Swami Vivekananda

Sir,

Instead of using words ''Ladies and gentlemen'' he addressed the large gathering in Chicago in USA with the words. ''My American brothers and sisters....''. This reflected the personality of this great saint from India to the western world. He presented the right picture of India and its traditions in America.

Some time back the statue of Swami Vivekananda was unveiled in the Parliament in New Delhi which was a right step in right direction. I have some collection of old coins on national leaders saints etc but I have never seen any coin minted in the name of Swami Vivekananda. As the Central Government announce every year different awards in different categories, the same way Government should announces Swami Vivekananda award in whatever category the Government thinks appropriate.

MEA boss

Sir,

The country has atleast got a fullfledged External Affairs Minister (DE, Oct 25). The Prime Minister had kept the ministry with him with the responsibilities that the Prime Minister is having it becomes near impossible for him to attend to the daily routine of the ministry and that too of a very demanding one like the External Affairs.

Many times he was asked about it and he in his characteristic way had expressed his opinion about the same. India is playing an increasingly crucial role in the international arena. With an increasing economic clout, an observer status at G-8, a pivotal role in Non-alligned movement, South-South co-operation, common-wealth and other world fora the demands of the Foreign Ministry has increased manifold. The war against terror and the effect that it has made on our security has again increased the work load of the Ministry. With a very busy Prime Minister an independent boss at South block was long over due.

Traffic management

Sir,

A number of suggestions and orders were given by High Court for improving the traffic system in Jammu and Kashmir particularly in Jammu and Srinagar cities, but no improvement is seen on the surface. A large traffic police force has been impressed in Jammu city to monitor and enforce the traffic rules in the city. But there main duty is reduced to collect the huge revenue for the state. The condition of the traffic congestion is such that even a traffic policeman was crushed to death near Panama Chowk.

The situation of the traffic at the major crossings in the city is left to the mercy of the drivers particularly matador drivers. A large number of letters are been regularly published in your paper about the worst conditions of our traffic monitoring system and a regular item of news is there to highlight the daily accidents. Keeping in mind the poor infrastructure for traffic management, there is a need to utilize the available resources in a better possible way.

Kapil's counsel

Sir,

A news report published in this paper (Oct 23) about the opinion expressed by former Captain Kapil Dev about the functioning and style of coaching of Greg Chappel is pregnant with wisdom. On one side the former India Captain who has an impeccable record of integrity has questioned the two much experimenting with cricketers and on the other hand he has underlined the need for the coach to understand the Indian way of life and India culture.

Kapil Dev in his assertion has asked rightly the Indian coach of desist from too much experimenting with the players regarding their place in the team or in the batting orders. We Indians are rooted to our place and donot like too much insecurity. The frequent changes will tell upon the mental fitness and morale of team India which will eventually prove detrimental to it. Kapil had perhaps an underlined caution aimed at BCCI about the feasibility of foreign coaches for our team when the dearth of men capable of coaching the Team India is not so widespread in our country.
