Accidents
galore
Sir,
The news about the death of
5 persons in accidents in various parts
of the Jammu division (DE, Oct 17) has
again brought to the focus about the need
of enforcing traffic rules in the
division. The city of Jammu is also
witnessing a regular grim scenario in
which some persons are killed in
accidents. It is very disturbing trend.
This needs to be tacked on a war footing.
We should not resort to any belame game.
In this, we all have to
share the responsibility and we all have
to share our share of faults too. It will
be unfair to put the balance on bus or
matador drivers only. All those persons
who drive vehicles are responsible
towards enforcing healthy driving habits.
The State traffic departments need to be
expanded urgently in view of the
burgeoning traffic in the Jammu city and
whole of Jammu division. CCTV have to be
installed and the traffic department has
to be armed with power to fine erring
drivers to the extent that the fine
becomes a real delterent.

Brave
action
Sir,
The news report ''Shopian
people capture Hizb Militant (DE, Oct
17" ) is a bold act on the part of
the residents of the village Sugoo. Of
late the area of Pulwama -Shopian has
become infested with the militants and
now and then they indulge in crimes
unheard of the people of the said village
have demonstrated courage to take these
merciless people head on. Then alone
could such a brave act be enacted. This
exemplary act of bravery can be emulated
by the people in other areas as well.
After all if people come out
in large numbers against these barbaric
militants whether they belong to any
group or region the time is not far when
collective will of the people of the
Valley can force these men to close their
activities and leave our country. Let
'Sugoo' create a hope towards this holy
mission.

Noise
pollution
Sir,
In the capital cities of
Jammu and Srinagar directions have been
by the High Court regarding the
regularisation of traffic. Some
improvement in this regard has already
been registered on the ground. But
unfortunately nothing is done regarding
the noise pollution inside matadors due
to the loud blaring of tapes and radios
fixed in their vehicles. This causes
inconvenience as well as mental strain on
the passengers. Whenever passengers try
to intervene and ask the matador drivers
or conductors to stop the loud music they
pay scant heed to it.
The traffic department is
requested to kindly look into this menace
on a regular basis so that the tapes and
radios played loudly in the matadors is
controlled. Not only this but the
roadside radio and loudspeaker shops also
play their music or songs on a high pitch
which can be heard from a distance. Steps
need to be taken so that this noise
pollution is reduced. This way we can
undoubtedly make our city a better place.

Delay in
fighter jet purchase
Sir,
The mordinate delay in the
purchase of fighter jets by the
Government of India has put the IAF in a
piquant situation. A few decades ago the
full operational strength of the IAF was
put at 45 squadrons. This strength is the
officially sanctioned strength of the
IAF. But the rate of attrition and very
long delay in the induction of LCA has
put a great amount of strain on the Air
Force. About six years ago it was decided
that in the wake of the delay in the
induction and operationalisation of LCA
(Tejas) the Air Force should go far the
purchase of a medium range multi role
fighter jet.
But despite six years the
Government is yet undecided about the
make and type of the jet it intends to
purchase. As suich aircrafts are not
available off the shelf it will take at
least 5 to 6 years to purchase the full
number of 126 aircraft that the Airforce
needs badly. By the Government acts now,
still, we will be left with only 30 or so
operational squadrons which is not a
happy situation vis-a- vis China or
Pakistan. Will the Government do
something very soon in this regard.
Yours
etc...
