Pak snatch thrilling win over Sri Lanka

JAIPUR, Oct 17: Pakistan showed no signs of being ruffled by the sensational dope scandal as they kept their composure in the dying stages to snatch a thrilling four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a Group-B encounter of the Champions Trophy here tonight.

After restricting the islanders to 253, the Pakistanis relied on Shoaib Malik (46 not out) and Abdul Razzak (38 not out) to see the team through the tense final overs for a creditable victory with 11 balls to spare at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

The Pakistanis, playing their opening match just a day after their two pace spearheads Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif were withdrawn from the tournament after testing positive for a banned drug, did not allow the unsavoury episode to unsettle them as they collected two full points.

Apart from Malik and Razzak, opener Imran Farhat (53) and Mohammad Yousuf (49) were the other notable contributors in the floodlit contest which went the whole distance unlike most of the other games in the high-profile tournament so far.

Razzak lifted Dilhara Fernando for a six straight over his head to bring the victory in style, sending the Pakistani dressing room into a frenzy.

Electing to bat, the Sri Lankans had themselves to blame for not putting up a bigger total on the board as their top five batsmen got the starts but could not make them count.

Sanath Jayasuriya (48), Upul Tharanga (38), Mahela Jayawardene (31) Kumar Sangakkara (39) and Marvan Atapattu (36) managed to get decent scores but it was not enough. The failure of the lower order batsmen compounded their misery.(PTI)

Damocles sword hangs over ‘erring’ Sports Associations

By Mohinder Verma

JAMMU, Oct 17: Damocles sword is hanging over several influential persons heading Sports Associations of Jammu and Kashmir and will be penalised with deaffliation for having made Associations their ‘personal property’.

Sources told the EXCELSIOR that Sports Ministry has sought details of all those Sports Associations which are getting grants from J&K State Sports Council for conducting sports activities across the State but confined their activities in twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar thereby leaving available potential unexplored.

Even some players from Kathua district recently approached the Sports Ministry and said that due to ‘favoritism’ in selections for the national level events by different associations, deserving sports persons are not getting opportunities to showcase their potential, the sources disclosed.

As Government has also come to know that elections to most of the associations have not been conducted for the past several years, details in this regard have also been sought from the Sports Council to ensure that such associations don’t remain ‘personal property’ of some persons.

Moreover, a number of associations have confined their activities in capital cities despite the fact that it is mandatory for them to conduct games at district level to explore the hidden potential and provide them opportunity to play at State level and then national events.

"After collecting all sorts of details, Sports Ministry will issue a warnings to erring associations to strictly follow the rules or be ready for deaffiliation from the State Sports Council", the sources disclosed.

The Government is also critical about the functioning of the Sports Council and feels that it has not been working upto the satisfaction of the sports persons. "The proper recruitment rules of the Council are also being drafted to keep check on the backdoor appointments", the sources said.

"A Sports Authority pattern prevalent in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu is also being studied by the Government and a team headed by Sports Minister Babu Singh will also visit these states to see how Sports Authorities function", they disclosed and said that this is being done to explore the possibility of converting J&K State Sports Council into Sports Authority of J&K.

Council kept in abeyance

JAMMU, Oct 17: Minister for Sports Babu Singh today kept in abeyance the regularisation orders of seven Instructors and grilled Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council for issuing orders without the mandatory approval of Standing Committee.

When the issue came to the notice of Minister, he sought details in this regard from the Secretary and after proper scrutiny of the files, it was established that there was no approval of Standing Committee of the Council to the regularisation of services of seven Instructors.

The Minister immediately kept in abeyance the said order and even grilled Secretary for violation of the norms.

Court restrains former committee

members from interference

Excelsior Correspondent

Jammu, Oct 17: City Judge Jammu Pawan Dev Kotwal today in a suit filed by Joint Secretary J&K Cricket Association restrained former selection committee members from causing interference in selection process initiated by the association.

Court further held that this order is however, subject to objections from other-side and shall remain in operation till the next date. In the meanwhile, court allowed applicant to complete formalities in compliance with the provisions of order 39, R-3 CPC.

In the suit, an application also came seeking interim injunction restraining the defendants (former Committee members) from claiming themselves as selectors of the J&K Cricket Association and from interfering in selection process of the team by the selection sub-committee constituted by the working committee of association in its meeting July 18, 2006.

Mr. Pawan Dev Kotwal after hearing Advocate Vishal Sharma appearing for the association observed that it reveals that the applicant has sought decree for permanent prohibitory injunction, restraining the non-applicants from causing any interference in the selection process of team by the association, on the ground that the non-applicants ceased to be members of the selection committee on formation of new Committees.

Court further observed that association constituted various committees including the selection committee by virtue of resolution July 18, 2006 and the applicant as prima-facie case and non-applicants appears to be members of earlier selection committee constituted on July 10, 2003 and with formation of new selection committee, they prima-facie appears to have ceased to be the members of the selection committee, as such the applicants has a prima-facie case, for the time being, and issuance of prior notice may defeat the purpose of the suit and put the applicant to bear irreparable loss or injury.
