Denial of interest to pensioners

Sir,

The Government professes to be sympathetic towards senior citizens but its callous attitude towards the pensioners is evident from the notification DIP/J-301 Dt. 24.4.2006 issued by the Director Funds Organisation. According to this, a pensioner is allowed interest on his GPF deposits for 6 months only after his retirement. What is worse, the rule has been applied retrospectively to all the pending cases. There is no precedence when interest is denied retrospectively. I retired from Government service in 2003 and started completing the complicated formalities required for the submission of the case (This includes getting statements from all the places of posting during the last two decades). When I submitted the case in 2006, the interest for 3 years was denied.

The said notification is unjust and unfair to the pensioners who need all sympathy in the evening of their lives. Even those who retire now should not be held responsible for the delay in the submission of the cases. On the other hand, it should be made imperative for the concerned officers to process the cases just after the retirement of the submission.

Water scarcity

Sir,

The damage caused to Shitlee filtration plant has resulted into a serious scarcity of water in the areas which were supplied by the plant. To the chargin of the public and the PHE these areas are vast. Almost all of the old city, New Plot, Janipur, Rehari etc. were supplied by this filtration plant. With the result the PHE department is not able to cope up with the situation. The blocking of BC Road by angry mob protesting against the shortage of drinking water is quite natural. Afterall water is crucial to for life and how can people remain calm and pacified when such an essential thing is in short supply.

Similarly the water crisis is in other areas also. Chief Minister had ordered digging of borewells to augment the water supply to these areas. Some have been made operational but more are needed to be dug soon. In the meanwhile optimum use of water tankers should be made so that water is supplied equitably to the areas which are badly hit. The public should also use water judiciously so that it is not wasted anymore.

Environment degradation

Sir,

I would like to draw kind attention of the concerned authorities towards environmental degradation due to various human activities. With rapid urbanisation and industrialisation owing to the overgrowing population the environment around us is deteriorating at an alarming rate. With the coming up of major developmental projects.

We must wake up and realise about this serious threat and make the environment clean. The concerned deptts, agencies, NGO's, social organisations, educations institutions must act in an coordinated manner to make the general public aware about the significance of clean environment. We all must give a serious thought to this vital issue of grave concern for all of us. There is a primary and utmost need to generate 'Awareness' among the masses vis-a-vis proper enforcement of environmental laws in stringout manner. Those who are doing commendable service to save environment and helping to inculcate environment awareness among others, must be suitably rewarded. At last, I would like to conclude that 'Where there is will there is way', hence we must reorieate our thinking and change and mindset so as to make our environment neat and clean to live in pollution free and environmental - friendly surroundings.
