Govt yet to identify coal mines for Sasol project

MUMBAI, Oct 14: The Government is yet to identify the coal mines that could be awarded to South African alternative fuel company Sasol, which plans to invest USD six billion to put up a plant to convert coal to oil in India.

Sasol, a pioneer in converting coal and gas to diesel, has proposed to set up a coal to oil conversion project in India using gas to liquids (GTL) technology, provided it is awarded coal mine with one billion tonne reserve.

"We are currently examining their proposal, but the coal mine has not been identified yet," Adviser (Projects), Ministry of Coal, P R Mandal told reporters on the sidelines of an international power summit here today.

If it gets assurance on coal reserves, Sasol would conduct the feasibility study for the project, which alone would cost Rs 200-300 crore, he added.

The project, if materialised, could provide India a much-desired breather from oil imports.

A leader in the conversion of gas and coal to fuels such as diesel and petrol, Sasol was formed in 1950 by the then apartheid government to convert coal to crude oil so as to reduce South Africa's dependence on oil imports.

Sasol's proposal, if it materialises, could be the single largest case of foreign direct investment in the country. However, the fact remains that in India there are only a few coal mines with proven reserves of one billion tonnes.

Sasol would convert 20 mt of coal of the available variety into three mt of oil, Mandal added. (PTI)
