Mehjoor
and Nadim
Sir,
The present Government
headed by Mr Gulam Nabi Azad, has rightly
renamed many colleges and roads after our
freedom fighters and eminent citizens of
an earlier era. This is a great step
forward to remember our heritage. In this
connection the Tankipora road, leading to
the DC's office in Srinagar has been
renamed as Mehjoor Road. This is a
welcome step and an honour to the great
Kashmiri secular poet, Mehjoor.
There was one more poet,
philosopher and educationist, late D N
Nadim who was also a comrade-in-arms of
the late educationist of Bhadarwah, G R
Azad. Nadim Saheb's contribution to
Kashmiri literature and theatre can never
be ignored. It is he alone, who for the
first time introduced 'opera' in Kashmir
after a cultural visit to Russia in
mid-fiftees. This great poet and thinker
was a near master of all subjects. One
day in mid-fiftees Late Bakshi Ghulam
Mohd, requested Nadim Saheb to compile a
poem in 12 hours (at short notice) in
honour of the then Soviet leaders-
Bulganin and Khruschev-during their visit
to Kashmir; the two leaders were
fascinated by the poem and subsequently
invited the great poet to visit USSR.
On the passing away of
Mehjoor, Nadim's close friend, he
prepared an obituary poem in just 3 hours
to recite the same on his burial. None
can ignore Nadim Saheb when to whole
nation recited his famours verse
''Bambroo-Bambroo-Shyam Rang
Bambroo------'' for almost last 5 years.
As a befitting tribute to
late Nadim Saheb, the State Govt., should
rename the Chinkral Mohalla road where he
was born, as ''Nadim Saheb Road'' or else
rename some existing theatre/hall after
him or institute one gold medal every
year to someone who excels in
poetry/Kashmiri theatre.

Cultural
Academy Awards
Sir,
Every year the State
Cultural Academy gives awards to eminent
writers in different languages for their
best works. This year too sixteen writers
were given awards for their works. Writer
from Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh were selected
for these awards. I wonder whether the
Cultural Academy gives any awards to
books written in Persian, Arabic or
Sanskrit. Our State has a great tradition
of Sanskrit learning. Some of the best
literature in the world has been written
in this State in Sanskrit.
Apart from Kashmir, which
has made great contributions to this
language; Jammu too has important writers
who wrote or are writing in Sanskrit.
This language is considered as the Pride
of India. It is the language which has
almost perfect grammar. The Cultural
Academy must give due importance to this
language and the writers who still
fortunately write in it. The Cultural
Academy should take steps to patronise
this language without which the word
culture in Indian context is difficult to
comprehend.

Harnessing
hydro power
Sir,
Our State has huge hydro
power potential. To date we are able to
generate few hundred megawatts of power
for the State out of this huge potential.
It is to be noted that for a long time
the hydro power in the State of not given
due priority. Twenty or thirty years ago
we had Gandherbal, upper Sind and Chenani
Hydro projects. Then came, lower Jehlem,
Uri and Salal. But projects which are
under taken by NHPC yield us very low
quantity of power, I mean for the State.
If peak load demand and future industrial
needs are taken into consideration our
State needs atleast 1000 MW of power. The
State has to undertake hydroprojects
which are directly under its control.
Mercifully steps are taken in this
direction.
But NHPC should be impressed
upon to yield atleast 50 percent of power
that it generates for the State. River
Chenab is an ideal river to generate
hydropower. A cascade of power houses
built on this river will yield huge
quantity of power. But in lean season
when water in the rivers of the State
falls to very low levels especially from
December to April the generation falls
down. To argument it a coal fired thermal
power station somewhere between Kathua
and Jammu has to be erected to offset the
peak load demand in lean months.
