Sniffer dogs

Sir,

A news report about a sniffer dog sniffing out five boxes of contraband makes interesting reading. Alongwith men, dogs too have been used with telling effect to locate drugs, weapons, RDX, IEDS and other explosive.

A few years back a sniffer dog near Mahamya forest performed daring deed but died in the encounter. Dogs have uncanny power of smell. And it needs no emphasising that in loyality dogs are second to none. These two divine qualities make them a notch above other animals. In a complex security scenario that our state is getting enmeshed in we need a large number of such dogs. They can be used at important installations and public places as well as at roadcrossings, busstands, etc they can improve the security environment of the state.

But many times a sniffer dog which is trained painstackingly for years is killed due to explosions or gunfire. Some ways have to be thought by which some fibre reinforced light weight bullet proof vest be fabricated so that the precious lives of these canines are saved.

Wildlife week

Sir,

We are celebrating wildlife week. This week is hence naturally dedicated to the preservation of wildlife. Out State has five geographical zones the plains of Jammu, the Jammu shivaliks, Panchal mountains, valley of Kashmir and the cold desert of Ladakh.

Besides it there are many wetlands and lakes which have their own flora and fauna. During the last three decades we have witnessed a marked decrease in the wildlife population of the State. The advent of low intensity or should we say the proxy war took a heavy toll of wildlife. The pride of the state's wildlife -Hangul, Snow Leopard, Ibex, Markhor, Thar, Monal pheasant, the jungle cock, Mahaseer etc are on the verge of extinction. The pressure on forests and merciless cutting down of tree cover has resulted in denudation of once pristine forests tracts. It is true that the celebration of a wildlife week will have a positive effect on the wildlife preservation. In addition to that what is needed is a holistic approach to the problem of forest and wildlife conservation on a sustained basis. This way only can we stop the further damage to this great natural assest.

Epitome of simplicity

Sir,

Recently we celebrated the birth anniversary of Lal Bhadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India. Frankly speaking had he not been bron on 2nd October he would have arrested the attention of one and all. He rose from poverty to the highest seat of power speaks for itself about the struggle that this man must have waged.

A thorough gentleman as he was he never allowed his life to be tained by any moral failure. When as Railway Minister an accident too occured he offered to resign owning moral responsibility for the same. It is said that even his personal belongings were limited. When he was deputed by Pandit Nehru to Kashmir to solve the case of the theft of holy rilic of Prophet Mohammad; he was given personal overcoat by Pandit Nehru at the airport to ward off intense cold of Kashmir! The guts that he displayed during Indo Pak war of 1965 made him immortal. May the architect of Jai Jawan Jai Kissan inspire us all to remain simple, truthful and fearless in our lives.

Harmful pesticides

Sir,

The article published in Sunday Magazine (Qct Ist) titled 'Harmful effects of pesticides' was interesting. It revealed the damaging role that pesticides can play in our lives.. Our food, water and soil is polluted by pesticides. The recent cola controversy is also a result of widespread use of pesticides. It will not be an overstatement if we say that whatever we eat will have some measure of pesticides in it.

That is why new diseases are cropping up. Premature ageing, loss of memory, chromosomal disorders, respiratory diseases and cancers are on the rise. Pesticides have threatened the lives of the people. Here if corrective measures are not taken immediately the situation will go out of control. In this context 'green' philosophy has to be adopted. It means the use of natural and less harmful pesticides derived from nature be used. In addition to this, Biological control has must scope in pest control. Vigrous research must be undertaken in these areas so that less harmful, natural and environment friendly pesticides are formulated.
