Hasya
Vayanga
Sir,
The Navratra festival at
Katra showcased the cultural tradition of
Jammu and other surrounding States. It
also held Hasya Vayanga contest. Actually
'Hasya' is one for the nine Rasa in the
Indian aesthetics. If translated into
English it is the sentiment of humour.
'Vayanga' means satire. Satire and humour
have always been an important part of our
literature. In todays world when we
smitten between the rampant materialism
on one hand and mental stress on the
other 'Hasya and Vayanga' can be of great
help in lessening the mental stress of
the people.
Now, we are discovering the
medicinal effects of laughter. Laughter
clubs have come up in different cities
when people laugh unrestrained so that
the stress which envelopes their busy
lives is removed. These days we have
forgotten to laugh or even smile. People
wear a frown on their faces. It is here
that 'Hasya' can play a role. The Academy
of art and Culture must regularly
organise 'Hasya' functions where poets
will comment on our problems through
satire and humour so that we learn to
laugh again.

Women
health
Sir,
Everybody knows that today
men outnumber women in India, unlike in
most other countries where the reverse is
the case. Census 2001, recorded that
there were only 933 women for every 1000
men. The majority of women go through in
life a state of nutritional stress as
they are anemic and malnourished. Girls
and women face nutrition discrimination
within the family, eating last and least.
This results in chronic nutrition
deficiency. The average Indian women
bears her first child before she is 22
years old, and has little control over
her own fertility and reproductive
health.
Only 53 percent of Indian
women are literate as compared to 76
percent men. For fewer girls than boys go
to school. Even when girls are enrolled,
many of them drop out of school to care
for younger siblings. Women face violence
inside and outside the family throughout
their lives.
Police records shows that a
women is molested in India every 25
minutes, a rape occurs every 34 minutes.
Every 42 minutes, an incident of sexual
harassment takes place. Every 43 minutes,
a women is kidnapped. Every 93 minutes, a
women is killed.
Such type of injustice
should not be meted out to women. Male
dominant society has to eliminate such
type of thinking from its system. This
half of the society should be treated
equally because according to the Indian
constitution and civilization both men
and women are equal.

Medical
Institute
Sir,
A new item published on
Sunday (Oct 1st) about the coming up of a
Medical Institute in Katra is a Navratra
gift to the people. The Vaishno Devi
Shrine board since its inception by the
former Governor Jagmohan has not only
improved the infrastructure of the
pilgrimage to the holy cave. In addition
to it the board has shown farsightedness
by investing money in such projects which
ore of help to the state's general
well-being. The establishment of Mata
Vaishno Devi University has been one such
step.
Now the decision to
establish a Medical Research Institute
will have a salutary effect on the
medical facilities of our State. The
Cancer Institute as well as the
development of superspeciality blocks
will serve lakhs of people of Udhampur,
Reasi, Poonch, Rajouri etc. Now people of
these remote areas will have access to
specialised health care without coming to
Jammu. It will, in the long run reduce
the load on the city's hospitals also.

Suran
valley
Sir,
This refers to an article
published in Sunday Magazine (Oct. 1st)
about Suran valley. In this regard I want
to say that Jammu Division is full of
beautiful areas and valleys which are as
beautiful as any other famous tourist
spots of the State. Suran valley as well
the whole of Surankote is extremely
beautiful. Nestled under the lofty peaks
of Panchal ranges this areas has huge
tourist potential. All the elements like
forests, snow, and mountain, rivers, cool
climate which can make it a spot for
tourist attraction are present in this
area in ample measure. What is needed is
a vision and direction so that the full
potential of the whole Surankote is
exploited to the fullest.
If infrastructure is
developed, Surankote can attract lot of
visitors. We need to focus on pilgrims to
Mata Vaishno Devi. If low cost hotels,
huts, and other civil amenities are put
in place the tourist potential of Suran
valley can help in eradicating poverty
and unemployment in the region.
