J&K win medals in National Championship

JAMMU, Nov 24: J&K Kayaking and Canoeing team won four silver and one bronze medal in the recently concluded XVII National Kayaking and Canoeing Championship held at Upper Lake Bhopal (M.P.) from November 15-18.

The State team participated in Sub Junior Boys and Girls, Junior Boys and Girls and Senior Men and Women.

Before leaving for the championship, J&K team had undergone a 15 day coaching camp organised by the J&K State Sports Council at Water Sports Centre, Nehru Park, Srinagar under the supervision of Umar Farooq.

Sports Minister, Madhya Pradesh gave away medals to all the participants in the championship. A.C. Kohli, President Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association was also present on the occasion.

Nikhil Kapahi outclass Pallav

JAMMU, Nov 24: Nikhil Kapahi and Owais Baba are almost certain to enter into the semifinal after their easy wins in the ongoing 16th J&K Billiards and Snooker Championship being played at Billiards Hall, M.A. Stadium today.

In the league matches played today in quarterfinal, Owais Baba defeated Abhishek Pathania by 46-44, 40-70, 40-48, 46-33 and 65-9.

Nikhil Kapahi beat Amardeep Singh by 61-16, 69-46 and 58-27 with consummate ease.

He again outclassed Abhishek Pathania by 77-33, 61-16 and 61-34 in anther one sided contest.

Omar Farooq had to sweat for his win over Pallav Gupta defeating him by 37-51, 69-37, 77-39 and 53-40. Owais Baba overcame Amardeep Singh by 3-1 frames 58-34, 29-63, 68-16 and 69-17.

Earlier, in the pre quarterfinals played today, Younis beat Sahil Arora by 62-22, 64-21 and 75-48 while Pallav Gupta beat Vidit Gawri by 75-12, 61-48 and 55-40.

The officials in the match were Rakesh, Shankar Dass and Surjit Singh.

The semifinals will be played on November 26 from 12 Noon.

However, the Senior Snooker championship shall commence from November 27.

The tournament is being organized by the J&K Billiards and Snooker Association and sponsored by the J&K State Sports Council.

Kawa Kachi Chawni beat Kawa Udhampur

JAMMU, Nov 24: KAWA Kachi Chawni registered a convincing 65 run win over KAWA Udhampur in the ongoing GKR Memorial Twenty-20 Cricket Tournament being played at GGM Science College today.

Batting first after winning the toss, KAWA Kachi Chawni piled up formidable 179 runs in 19.3 overs.

Deepak was the star batsman, who played an excellent knock of 75 runs in just 41 balls which comprised of 12 hits to the fence.

Sahil also contributed useful 27 runs with the help of four boundaries.

For KAWA Udhampur, Vishal Manhas was the most successful bowler, who scalped four wickets.

Hamid also chipped in with two wickets. There were 31 extras.

In reply, KAWA Udhampur managed 114 runs as the whole side was bundled in 18.4 overs.

They got off to a disastrous start by losing first wicket at 2. Saini Jamwal was the top scorer with 51 runs. He struck six fours and one monster hit for a six.

For KAWA Kachi Chawni, Amit Rathore and Kapil Kotwal grabbed two wickets each.

Deepak Kumar for his magnificent knock of 75 runs was adjudged the Man of the Match.

The umpires in the match were Santa Singh and Rajeev Kumar. The scorers were Ashok Kumar and Narinder Sanotra.

The tournament is being organised by Roshni Cricket Academy (RCA) and sponsored by Shree Toyota (Diamond Sponsor), Indian Oil Corporation, Pepsi, Jammu Motors and Sangari Automobiles.

JAMMU, Nov 24: The 8 day Wrestling Coaching Camp organised by the J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association in collaboration with the Udhampur District Indian Style Wrestling Association was commenced at Government Middle School, Badhota today.

Shiv Kumar Sharma, President, J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association was the chief guest on the occasion.

Sardari Lal Dubey, President, District Udhampur Indian Style Wrestling Advisory Board presided over the function.

Students who took part on the opening day of the coaching camp were Parshotam Singh, Govind Singh, Som Raj, Parkash Singh, Munesh, Ramesh Singh, Sandeep Singh, Bhushan Singh, Raj Inder Kumar, Ravi Kumar, Ankesh Chand and Mohan Lal.

Tiny Tots win Triangular Cricket Tourney

JAMMU, Nov 24: Tiny Tots Higher Secondary School defeated Project Model Higher Secondary School in the final to win Challenge Cup Triangular Tournament played at Baba Jamna Dass Cricket Ground today.

Riyaz Ali of Tiny Tots was declared the Man of the Match and Man of the Series.

The tournament was organised by the Sky Sports Society.

Kuldeep Sharma, Principal, Project Model HSS was the chief guest in the final match, who gave away winner and runner up trophies to the teams. Vivek Sharma, President, Sky Sports Society was also present on the occasion.

JAMMU, Nov 24: Host J&K defeated Punjab by 11-7 in their second match as the 2nd North Zone Korfball Championship was get under way at Green field Gandhi Nagar today.

In the first match, J&K drew with Uttaranchal as both teams scored 5-5 goals in the allotted time. International Player Manjeet Singh scored 5 goals. For Uttaranchal, Ashish scored 2 goals. At half time, both teams were levelled at 2-2.

In other matches played today, defending champion Haryana beat Himachal Pradesh by 10-2, Punjab beat Chandigarh by 11-7, Himachal Pradesh beat Chandigarh by 7-6 and Haryana beat Punjab by 13-6.

Earlier, A.K. Angurana, (IAS) Principal Secretary, Higher Education was the chief guest on the opening occasion, who declared open the championship. T.S. Wazir, MLC, President J&K Korfball Association, Manjeet Singh, Tarlok Singh, Ram Sharma, B.D. Balgotra, Ashok Kumar, Krishan Lal and Sudhir Kumar were also present on the occasion.

The tournament is being organised by the J&K Korfball Association under the aegis of J&K State Sports Council.

MAM College win Inter Collegiate Cricket Trophy

JAMMU, Nov 24: MAM College sealed a thumping win over GGM Science College by 84 runs in the final to claim Intet Collegiate Cricket (Men) title played at Jammu University today.

MAM college won the toss and decided to bat first. They accumulated 222 runs in 66 overs. Rajiv, Onkar and Harmeet were the top scorers with 34, 26 and 23 runs respectively. For Science College, Dheeraj took four wickets while Abhinandan grabbed three wickets.

In reply, Science College was all out for 138 runs in 45.4 overs.

Vishal played a fighting knock of 31 runs followed by Maninder and Dheeraj, who scored 27 and 20 runs respectively.

For MAM College, Vikram was the most successful bowler, who snared four wickets. Amninder and Varinder took two wickets each.

The umpires in the match were Sandeepan and Naveen Sharma. The tournament was organised by the Department of Physical Education, Jammu University.

Softball Championship begins

JAMMU, Nov 24: The two day long Jammu District Softball Championship for Boys and Girls was commenced at Government Higher Secondary School, Domana today.

Teams from S.O.S., M.A. Stadium, Domana HSS, Sports Club and Saffron Club ing girls section while Domana Club, SOS, M.A. Stadium, Domana Migrant, Evergreen Club, Sports Club, HSS Domana and Saffron Club are participating in the boys section.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by A.R. Shigan, Vice President, J&K Softball Association and declared open by Principal HSS, Domana.

C.L. Bhat, General Secretary, J&K Softball Association and S.S. Bali, Assistant Director, Department of Physical Education were also present on the occasion.

Jammu emerges overall champion in Athletic Meet

JAMMU, Nov 24: Jammu District proved their supremacy by claiming overall championship of State Level Inter District Athletic Meet for U/14 and U/17 Boys and Girls which concluded at M.A. Stadium here today.

On the final day of the Athletic Meet, District Jammu won 4x100 mts Relay Race in U/14 age group followed by Doda and Budgam, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In U/17 Boys 4x100 Relay Race, Jammu again bagged first place while Udhampur and Srinagar had to be contented with 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Shahid Iqbal of Jammu finished first in U/14 Boys 200 mts final whereas Vishal Dev of Jammu and Ram Prasad of Rajouri finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In 400 mts U/14 Boys final, Vishal Kumar of Udhampur secured first position while Navjot Singh and Rahul Kumar of Jammu finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In U/17 Boys Tripple Jump final, Arun Kumar and Ankush of Jammu bagged first two positions whereas Bilal Ahmed finished 3rd.

Monika Chalotra of Jammu bagged first position in U/17 Girls Tripple Jump final. Suman Devi of Udhampur and Bindu Devi of Kathua finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In 100 mts final in U/17 Boys, Shahid Iqbal of Jammu finished first while Vishal Dev and Amir Iqbal stood 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Athletic Meet was organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports under the overall supervision of S.S. Bali, Assistant Director of the department.

Besides, Syed Ahmed, B.N. Bhat, Mohd. Din, P.S. Jasrotia, Mangat Ram, Geeta Sharma, Gurcharan Singh, Rajinder Singh and Suneeta Goel were also present on the occasion.

President inaugurates Sai International Centre for Sports

MUMBAI, Nov 24: President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated Sri Sathya Sai International Centre for Sports at Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (Deemed University).

Sri Sathya Saibaba was also present on the occasion.

The Sports Complex, which is one of the largest Indoor Sports Stadium in the country with a capacity of around 4000 spectators would meet the Olympiad standards with all modern facilities required for conducting any mega sports event.

The newly constructed Sri Sathya Sai International Centre for Sports will enable the students of the university to nurture their talents in order to compete at global levels to achieve greater heights in their sports career.

About 200 members from the fraternity of sports consisting of players, coaches, team managers, dignitaries, officials from sports associations, federations and eminent sports veterans from within India and Outside had assembled on the occasion.

The sports surface was approved by International Accredition Agencies like ITF, IBF, FIVB, FIBA, ITTF, IHF etc.The stadium was completed in record time of 150 days.
