Private
hospitals
Sir,
The news report titled,
''Govt allows Pvt players.... (DE, Nov.
17)'' will change the health sector of
the State in many ways if the decision is
allowed to get through. It is true that
our State has a better health care system
but given the unique nature of our State.
It is imperative to setup Private
hospitals in the State so that people can
have access to a better and specialised
medical care. These hospitals can prove a
boon to the public. If they are allowed
to operate in District headquarters where
better hospitals are not coming up due to
financial and other constraints the
private sector can help a great deal. We
have many eminent hospital groups in the
country like Apollo or Escorts etc which
can bring in high degree of excellence
into the medical scene of the State.
But the mootpoint is at what
cost will the health care of the private
hospitals be available to the public. It
is no secret that now health care is
becoming the costliest thing for the
commonman. Government should make efforts
to provide cheap and better healthcare to
the citizens. Business and profit motive
may be there but it should be only to a
certain extent. If private hospitals
bring in cheap and better healthcare they
are welcome otherwise if they prove too
costly for the patients then will people
afford their medicare is a riddle.

Katra to
Jhiri
Sir,
The recently concluded Jhiri
mela has raised the hopes about the
coming up of another pilgrim attraction
in the Jammu division. The reports that
about 1.5 million pilgrims visited Jhiri
(DE, Nov. 17) has broken all previous
records. It is hightime that the
Government gives due response to the
emerging up of Jhiri as a new pilgrim
spot.
Though it is true that Jhiri
mela or pilgrimage cannot be compared to
the Shri Vaishno Devi Ji in terms of the
number of pilgrims. Also in former case
the pilgrimage remains only for a week or
so while as in the latter case it is a
7X30X12 affair (allround the year). But
despite these visible differences there
are some basic similarities or
connections. And that is the relationship
of Bawa Jitto with the holy cave shrine
of Shri Vaishno Devi Ji.
As we know that Bawa Jitto,
Jhiri and Shri Vaishno Devi Ji are
interconnected we can focus on this
connection and thus relate the pilgrimage
or mela of Jhiri to Shri Vaishno Devi Ji.
If sincere efforts are taken the pilgrims
to Jhiri can be easily routed to Katra
and pilgrims from Katra can be easily
routed to Jhiri. The decision of the
Government to construct a road from Jhiri
to Katra is a welcome step and should be
undertaken without wasting much time.

People
capture militant
Sir,
The news report,
"People capture militant..... (dt.
Nov. 17) published in this paper has
brought to light a positive trend. The
capture of this militant from Kupwara and
handing over of the said militant to the
police has brought the now seemingly
forgotten memories of 1965 insurgency
when hundreds of the so-called Pak
Mujahideens were handed over
to the police by the people of the
Valley.
It seems now, undoubtedly
for the better, that the commonman in the
Valley cannot now suffer more. He is not
prepared to be taken in by the propaganda
machine of the Pak sponsored terror
machine and outfits. The common Kashmiri
wants peace. He has given vent to this
feeling by the handing over of the
militant. The common Kashmiri has to
display many more such actions. Let him
come clear on the terror. Let him
denounce it loudly. The same way the
masses in Kashmir have to think about the
people who were turned out of Kashmir.
Kashmir belongs to them as well.
Let the common man in the
Valley think in terms of the plural
dispensation in Kashmir which is only
possible when those who are languishing
outside the Valley are given their due
place in Kashmir that belonged to them
for thousands of years.

Nuke
deal
Sir,
The nuke deal with the US
has evinced great deal of interest all
over the world. The passage of the deal
in the senate with a thumping majority
has paved the way for the deal to get
through a very complicated American
system of reconciliation. The Prime
Minister was right when he said that we
have a long way to go before the nuke
cooperation between two countries is
materialised.
The important point to be
seen is that to what extent has the draft
decleration between President Bush and
the Prime Minister Manmohan been
reconciled in the final declaration. It
will then take a year or two till the
nuclear supply group is also convinced
about the nuke deal because in terms of
Nuclear Reactors America is not as
important as France, Canada and other
European countries are. These countries
will supply reactors and related
technology only when the deal is
ratified. But whatever the case may be it
is important to stick to our stated
position so that our apprehensions about
maintaining credible minimum deterence
vis-a-vis Pakistan and China is not
compromised with.
