Wildlife extinction

Sir,

The news report ''Asiatic lion fast dwindling'' (D.E dated Nov. 10). The rapid decline in population of few species of wild animals is really a matter of serious concern. The news revealing dwindling population of Asiatic lion certainly leaves an alarming note. As the natural habitat of wild animals are being constantly destroyed due to over growing population and urbanisation or in other words ''man-animal conflict''. Currently there are only two sub-species of lions. Africans and Asiatic. As reported by Wildlife Institute of India, Asiatic lions evolved from African lions and are much lesser in number and most threatened. Asiatic lions are found in Gir Forest area, (Gujarat) only where they may be volunerable to any kind of biological, climatic and man-made catastrophe.

Actually lions need large area with sufficient prey species, and once their prey animal species like antelope and other herbivorous population decline, lion population also suffers, so, this factor also needs to well understood to curb the problem of decline in population of lions. There are many other endangered species of wild life which are under serious threat to extinction such as Great Indian Bustard (GIB) Tigers, Asiatic lions, vultures etc. The wildlife is a part and parcel of nature's environment. There is an utmost need to understand the significance of conservation and protection of wildlife. The laws to curb the growing Menace of poaching of wildlife species must be stringently enforced. The concerned agencies and NGO's must unitedly come forward to make general public aware about the significance of conservation and protection of wildlife, otherwise, many wildlife fauna may become extinct. Since the wildlife fauna are 'environment-friendly' and keep nature's environment clean, it becomes very essential for us to conserve and protect the natural habitat of wildlife species for the survival.

Swami Lakshmanjoo

Sir,

Among the philosophical schools of India the Saiva Darsana of Kashmir is the latest.

It incorporates the logical method of Buddhism and the metaphysical groundings of the Vedanta. In addition to it the technical aspects of object-subject interface is treated in lucid detail. The final merger of these two aspects of the reality into the Param Shiva is a concept that is gaining slow but sure currency all over the world. Swami Lakshmanjoo has single handedly broughtout the important aspect of the great school and taught the philosophy to many students within the country and outside. He devoted all his life towards the propagating of this philosophy which is the common heritage of all mankind.
This year is the birth centenary year of this great saint scholar.

A number of seminars and programmes should be held to create awareness among the people about the relevance of this great teacher of the monoistic school of India philosophy. The people must know about the life and works of Swami Lakshmanjoo so that his life becomes an inspiration for all of us.

Domestic Violence Act

Sir,

The comments on Domestic Violence Act by Mr. Ravi Kumar (DE, Nov. 9) have highlighted the various aspects of the Act. In this context I would like to say that even though this Act is a welcome step in so far as the grievances of the women are concerned. It is a fact that since historical times women have been put to lot of hardships and cruelty by the menfolk. Despite the famous saying ''Yatar Nariyastoo Pujiyanti Tatra Ramante Devta'' (where women are respected Gods dwell there) women have been the subject of untold misery. The passing of the Domestic Violence Act will meet a long standing demand of the women. It will equip them with the necessary redressal mechanism to counter and thwart any attempts to undermine their emotional, physical and mental well being.

But the problem with the Act is that it can be misused by many women on one pretext or the other. There are many cases where husbands have been put to physical and mental torture by their wives. Many times the irrational behaviour of women create a serious situation for the husbands or fathers which results in complete mental breakdown of the male relations. This needs to be taken due care of and mechanisms have to be sought so that this act is not abused to the determent of the menfolk.
