CNG in the State

Sir,

In a landmark direction by the High Court to the State Government the need for building the necessary infrastructure for CNG has been sought to be created. Like in many cases before, here too the court has comeforward to admonish the State Government the need to move forward towards a clean fuel. Jammu city is experiencing a huge increase in the number of vehicles. Almost similar is the case with the summer capital also. If the number of vehicles go on adding the way they are then that day is not far when the city environment will be polluted to such an extent that the people will have no other alternative but to wear oxygen masks.

In the context the use and role of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is well known. In many metropolitian cities the CNG is available like petrol. In our State CNG must be made available in the petrol pumps so that people use this fuel which is clean, safer and economical. The sooner it happens the better it will prove for improving the environment and ecosystem.

Role of Navy

Sir,

Indian Navy has made India proud. The statement of the new Naval Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta (DE, Nov. 1) that Indian Navy visualises a new role for itself is in conformity with the needs of the Navy as well as expectations from it. The security environment of the subcontinent and beyond has undergone a radical change.

The relentless naval buildup by the Pakistan Navy and its purchase of Agosta class submarines and American surveillance aircraft has given the Pak Navy more teeth. The construction of Gwadar port in Pakistan with Chineese help is another dimension that needs attention. The Chineese listening posts and ship berth facility in Burma has been a threat which is of a strategic consequence. The growing piracy in waters very close to India especially off the Andaman sea and South east of Madras is yet another grave danger to Indian interests. To safeguard the country's interests from all these dangers the Indian Navy needs more funds for the purchase of new ships and for speeding up the indigenous construction at its shipyards.

Overpriced reflectors

Sir,

A news report titled, ''Reflectors purchased at exhorbitant rates (DE, Oct 28)'' is the past of a patten that seems to have become common place now. Such a news reflects the sorry state of our public life.

But we need to praise the Vigilance Department for the activism that it has shown in many case previously as well as in this case too. Corruption of any scale and any magnitude needs to be completely eradicated from our society. Otherwise how can be call ourselves civilized. The news reflects the boldness and impurity of the Vigilance Department. The department must carry on the good work that it has taken upon itself. Let the drive against corruption reach its logical end. In this drive the civil society too has to lend a helping hand to eradicate this menace forever.
