Protection
of women act
Sir,
The Protection of Women Act
has come into force. So far so good. To
my mind it should have been
"Protection of Spouses
Act". I have reasons in saying so.
Empowerment of women is a
new ideology for carrying democratic
values into the family and society. It
demands a basic change in the system of
marriage and family, husband- wife
relationship, attitude towards gender
socialization, remarriage. Empowerment
does not mean setting women against men.
Indeed, it means making both men and
women realise their changing roles and
status and develop a consensus for
harmonious living in the context of an
egalitatarian society. It means
redistribution of work roles, reorienting
their values to the changing world and
attitudes and evolving new kinds of
adjustments, understanding and trust with
each other.
It is very much a truth that
women represent a different way of being
human; they even show the other face of
God Almighty. One of the greatest changes
of the modern times is the emergence of
women; they are reaffirming their
dignity, their equality and taking their
place and responsibility in society. It
was the woman that made use of their
intelligence, instead of brutality to
ensure their survival and that of their
children. As wives and mothers, they have
created a civilized way of life. They
have invented the home and they have
convinced their men to care for it. They
have trained their husbands and sons to
cleanliness and order; they have valued
gentleness, tenderness, everything that
is sweet and delicate.
But not the new type of
women. They do not search for love, but
for power; they do not work for harmony
but for domination. They compete with
men; they have assumed their values.
Exteriorly, they appear like women, but
interiorly they are men. They feel wasted
if they give to man. Man is the enemy.
This type of woman thinks
that she represents the future but she
does not know that she has put herself in
line with the oldest tradition of
humanity; power, prevarication, war and
she risks losing the most precious things
in life: the ability to understand, the
capacity to love, and have warm heart.
In this context it shall be
meet to quote the observations of a
German Psychological Journal "
Psychologie Heute"-July 2004 edition
that claims: "It is men, not women,
who suffer most from domestic violence.
Women are showing a growing inclination
for physical aggression whereas their
husbands prefer to keep quiet about the
abuse they suffer. It is known that women
are capable of causing grave damage by
means of psychological torture,
embittering the lives of their families
by more subtle and indemonstrable means
such as coercion, humiliation or constant
bad temper."
The women should therefore,
realise that the Act is a step towards
their empowerment, which is an active,
multidimensional process that should
enable them to realise their full
identity and powers in spheres of life.
It consists in providing greater autonomy
in decision making, greater ability to
plan their lives, greater control over
the circumstances that influence their
lives and freedom from the shackles
imposed on them by custom, belief and
practice. The Act does not pit them
against men to settle their old scores.

Noise
pollution in matadors
Sir,
The letter titled, ''Noise
pollution (DE, Oct 23)'' by Girdhari Lal
Bhat, instantly caught my attention. I
could not remain without appreciating the
author who has tried to high-light the
problem of noise pollution inside the
matadors.
It is a big problem for the
people travelling in matadors/mini buses.
The drivers/owners instal high power
tape/radio sets in the vehicles. These
sets are played above any tolerable
limits and cause irritation to the
traveller. It is requested to the
concerned authorities to kindly take due
cognizance of the spirit of the letter
and launch a permanent drive, not a
temporary one to eradicate this noise
menace from the matadors or minibuses so
that people can travel without irritation
and noise pollution. Police and traffic
authorities must join hands in this
effort.

Accidents
Sir,
Every day there are reports
of accidents taking place all over.
Leaving aside the killings and injuries
that people suffer on account of the
ongoing militancy there is a rising graph
of accidents taking place. This trend is
very grave and if it is allowed to run
its course then we may land ourselves in
a difficult situation. Hardly a day
passes when we don't read the sad news of
people killed or injured in the
accidents. Who is to blame for this? If
we blame the traffic authorities then we
are not understanding the problem in its
entirety.
The point is not to blame
some organisation or absolve some. The
point is to create a synergy between the
traffic authorities and the vehicle
drivers whether they are private or
Government or even of the army. The
people need to be constantly educated
about safe driving. Here traffic police
has a role. On the otherside the public
need to understand the importance of
following traffic rules. We are loosing
precious lives everyday. Let us all rise
and do something towards a safer city, a
safer State.
