Pool
Club in the State
Sir,
The game of Snooker,
Billiards and Pool is getting popular in
the State. If we talk of Jammu city only
then it will not be out of place to say
that the city of temples is opening its
arms to these sports which are more or
less similar in essentials, as far as
infrastructure needs are concerned. Many
Pool Clubs have come up in which young
people are found in large numbers playing
either Billiards, Snooker and Pool.
People especially among the young are
raising big halls and in them they
install tables etc. people visit these
Pool Clubs and after payment play for a
while. But some of them indulge in
betting which is a bad trend.
Apart from these a young
batch of senior players have come up in
the State. Senior and Junior Snooker
championships are held in which many
talented players take part. These players
have talent and if more facilities are
provided to them they can surely win a
name for themselves and for the State.
There is not a single coach in the State
who can teach the young boys the secrets
of the game. A State Snooker policy needs
to the made which can ensure better
coaching and other facilities to the
talented players.

Transmission
line
Sir,
The commissioning of the 400
KV Kishenpur Wagoora double circuit
transmission line will greatly help the
power avaibility in the Kashmir Valley.
Previously the valley would remain
without electricity for days together.
People have not forgotten those better
days when due to the damage to
transmission towers power supply remained
cut off in the Valley for days together
and that too in the bitter cold. With the
commissioning of the transmission line
which has a carrying capacity of 140 MWs
the power supply to the Valley will
increase. At the same time the voltage
will also undergo an improvement. The
power generation in the State falls to a
low level due to the fall in the level of
water in the State rivers. This sharp
decline makes it imperative to import
power from outside. With the
commissioning of this line the State will
be able to purchase and transfer more
power from the Northern grid.

Floriculture
extension work
Sir,
It has been learnt with
concern that the State Govt is
contemplating transfer of floriculture
extension work from Agriculture
Department to the Department of
Floriculture. It is also understood that
the Department of Agriculture is being
assigned the job of commercial
floriculture only.
As far as my knowledge is
concerned, the State Agriculture
Department has already a well established
extension mechanism and network of
officers and workers at all the levels
i.e., State District, Subdivision, Zone
and Circles levels. The Department has
well qualified and experienced staff in
the field of agronomic and seed
production practices of floriculture.
Such a talented human resource should not
be allowed to go waste, particularly at a
time when Extension Reforms Programmes is
on cards. In contrast, the Department of
Floriculture may be having some
infrastructure for flower seed and
seedling production besides post harvest
management and marketing, but the lack
totally the required extension
infrastructure.
In the modern times of
thrust on diversified farming system and
integrated management approach, I feel
that it would be more appropriate to keep
the floriculture extension programme
including commercial floriculture under
the umbrella of State Agriculture
Department. It will not be out of place
to mention here that the Department of
Floriculture with its limited man power
and infrastructure should be allowed only
to continue with the responsibility of
maintenance, upkeep and beautification of
the existing and newly set up parks and
gardens, not only in the city of Jammu
and Srinagar but also at the districts,
block and panchayat level, near
Historical water bodies, palaces &
temples, etc. for the sake of tourist's
attraction and to boost Financial Status
of the State through tourism.
