Belated
justice
I
Sir,
The historic judgement of
Delhi High Court has finally done justice
not the family of Sh. Chaman Lal Mattoo
only but to those half a million Kashmiri
Pandit community who were eagerly waiting
for this final judgement of Priyadarshini
Mattoo's murder case. This is not the
victory of the judiciary only but the
victory of those millions of Indian
citizens who despite having a firm faith
in the law of the land, are denied timely
justice because they lack political
influence or connection with high ranking
police officers to change the verdict in
their favour either by manipulating the
clues or by influencing the witnesses.
Our hats off to the Delhi High Court for
efficient handling and solving this 11
year old gruesome rape and murder case of
the 23 year old innocent girl. Our hats
off too to the media, both print and TV
that did a commendable job in
highlighting and rejuvenating this
forgotten case to the public by
vigorously debating and discussing on it.
That helped to create a strong opinion
among the masses, old and young and
amount the students community in
particular for seeking a speedy
reinvestigation through CBI to bring such
a just judgement through the worthy
court. It should not be out of place to
mention here that the judiciary is the
last resort for the respected and
civilized citizen of the country to seek
justice. This remarkable judgement of the
Delhi High Court will surely work as a
deterrent against crime and criminality
and will reaffirm the poor man's faith in
the law of the land.

Sir,
The recent landmark
judgement given by the Delhi High Court
in, Priyadarshini Mattoo
murder case, has strengthened
the faith and confidence of common people
on Indian Judicial system. This decision
has mitigated the growing feelings of
disillusionment and frustration among
litigants on account of delayed justice
met to them in our legal - system.
Almost a decade has passed
from the date of happenings of the most
brutish and barbarous incident when the
accused Santosh Kumar raped and murdered
an innocent law student of Delhi
University. Had the police taken an early
action against the accused person with
respect to an F.I.R. registered by
Priyadarshini at Police - Station on
account of oppressions done to her by the
accused person, the precious life of
Priyadarshini could have been saved. It
is quite regrettable to note that the
said police did not bother to even assess
the nature of the case or to question the
accused person for his wrong doings.
Our constitution has
guaranteed social, political and economic
justice to all. But still the majority of
women in our country become victims of
physical, verbal, psychological,
emotional and financial abuse. Social
legislations enacted for the benefit of
women are not implemented in true spirit.
Even the law enforcing agencies like
police, bureaucrats, lawyers etc. take
casual approach regarding the human
dignity of women.
The Court has admitted from
the facts and circumstances of this case,
that the concerned police authorities
made shoddy investigations in this case
and on all possible occasions tried their
best to benefit the accused person who
belongs to highly influential family.
Even the Single Judge of the Subordinate
Court acted in capricious manner by
granting acquittal to the accused person.
It's my humble request to the higher
authorities that all such erring
officials shall be dealt strictly and
punished under law.
It has been proved beyond
all reasonable doubts that the Press and
Electronic media play an important role
in our democratic setup. I hope that in
future also, the Print and Electronic
Media would continue their strides for
providing relief among common masses by
solving their grievances and would able
to achieve its objective of promoting
good-faith and honesty across the
country.

Sir,
The verdict of Delhi High
Court in Priyadarshini Mattoo case has
been received with satisfaction by the
people of the country. After all, after a
period of ten years the parents, friends
and the common men of this country have
heaved a sigh of relief. The verdict
clearly proves that the investigative
work of the police at times has been
shoddy. In many cases the interference of
the politicians and high ranking officers
influence the investigation to the extent
that the even crucial evidences are
tampered with. The mattoo case is a
classic example of this What is of even
greater consequence is the fact that the
High Court has inverted the decision of
the lower court after taking due
cognizance of all the events leading to
the rape and murder of a promising young
life. It does not matter whether the
Supreme Court will uphold the death
sentence or reduce it to a life
imprisonment. What matters is that the
justice has been delivered atleast. This
has created hope for the cases like
Jessica Lall etc. There is an urgent need
to speed up the trial of such cases so
that the poor people do not feel let
down.

Wild
animals going berserk
Sir,
Despite a dwindling wild
life in our State there have been
increasing number of attacks on the
unarmed people in the hilly areas.
Previously a leopard has claimed many
young lives in Rajouri and Naushera. Now
a report about a lion killing a Gujjar in
south Kashmir (DE, Oct 28) is the latest
in the killing spree. Manlings by bears
have also been reported. What so ever the
case may. It is clear that we have made
deep incursions with the home of wild
animals. This has disturbed their already
fragile food chain. The pressure on
forests has resulted in the dwindling of
their prey. Thus the animals like
leopards or wolves (Found in the state)
are forced to carry off domestic animals.
Sometimes a human being makes an easy
target. We need to have a deep thought
about forests, wild animals and their
habitat. Then alone we can save whatever
is left of them.
Yours
etc...

Rehari.
