West Indies tactics astonishing: Harbhajan

ST KITTS, June 25: Ace Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh said the Indian team was surprised with the strategy adopted by West Indies, who seemed to be playing for a draw, on the third day of the third cricket Test here.

West Indies scored only 22 runs in the 14 overs before lunch break and Harbhajan termed it as astonishing tactics on the part of the hosts, who could have put more pressure on India by stepping up the scoring rate.

"We were surprised and were not sure if they wanted to play for a result or a draw. If they had picked up scoring earlier, they would have made 600-650 runs and put us under more pressure," Harbhajan said after the third day’s play here yesterday.

The Punjab bowler said perhaps the hosts had no intentions of winning the match.

"It seemed they did not want to win the game," he said.

However, Harbhajan, who did not play the first two Tests and picked up five wickets on his comeback, attributed his success to the attacking mode adopted by Caribbean batsmen in the post-lunch session.

"In those two games, the West Indian batsmen were in a defensive frame of mind. But here they wanted to attack," said Harbhajan after he recovered from an initial mauling to finish with 5 for 147 runs.

But, the turbanator said it was a difficult task to get wickets on a flat track suitable for batting.

"It is a batting paradise, the boundaries are short, the wicket is flat and it reminds me of Lahore. On this wicket even getting out number 11 is difficult."

He said the technique to let the body go behind the ball helped him a bit in the later stages of the innings.

"Chris Gayle went after me but in my second spell of 12-13 overs, I could let the body go behind the ball and it gave me confidence," he said.

Also the offie had to deal with umpire Brian Jerling, who once thought that Harbhajan was bowling a negative line.

"He thought I was bowling too wide and cautioned me that it could be termed negative. I told him I was bowling to my field on the off-side," he said.

Marlon Samuels, who along with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, was guilty of scoring slowly in that spell later defended their tactics.

"We went into our shell and sometimes when you do that, it is difficult to come out of that shell. The same happened to us," said Samuels.

West Indian captain Brian Lara said it was difficult to get wickets on a flat wicket but hoped to gain substantial lead in the match.

But, Lara did not think it was right to term his side had begun to turn the corner against the Indians in the series.

"I still feel it is early days. India has been the better team for much of this series."

"They are a better team, I would never forget their performance against Australia a few seasons ago which I thought was exceptional," he said.

Lara said his team was in the process of learning the nuances of Test cricket and needed to be more consistent in performance.

"We are still learning the art of longer games. We have to play tough sessions consistently. We need to learn to draw Tests before we start thinking of winning the games," he said. (PTI)

India beat New Zealand 3-2, bag third spot

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25: A fine brace by Hari Prasad guided India to a 3-2 win over New Zealand in the play-off for the third place in the 15th Sultan Azlan Shah eight-nation hockey tournament here today.

It was India’s first podium finish since 2000 when they finished third behind Pakistan and Korea.

In a hard-fought game, India, who led 2-1 at the break, found their star in Hari Prasad who scored twice in the 8th and 35th minutes while drag-flick specialist Sandeep Singh converted a penalty corner in the 43rd that proved to be the match-winner.

The black sticks stayed in the match right through after Simon Child put them ahead in the 7th minute and Hayden Shaw found the mark from a 39th minute penalty corner to put his team on level terms.

The Indians also owed their victory to goalkeeper Adrian D’souza who stopped at least four clear goals and also wing half-backs V S Vinaya (right) and Prabhodh Tirkey (left), both of whom had an outstanding game today.

India should have finished the first-half in a far more comfortable position but for some poor finishing by the forwards and also a loss of concentration by the deep defence.

The Indians repeatedly breached the fragile Kiwi defence only to break down inside the striking circle due to wrong passing or positional play.

In the sixth minute, Arjun Halappa pounced on a deflection and fired the ball onto the boards. Even though TV replays showed that the ball was inside the striking circle, Korean umpire Jung Min Jang disallowed the goal saying the hit was not taken from inside the D.

The Indians were distracted by the incident and the Kiwis mounted a fast counter-attack at the end of which child deftly turned and let fly a reverse hit to the net.

Despite the stunning reverse, the Indians, who had beaten New Zealand by the same margin in the two practice games ahead of the tournament, kept their composure to equalise almost immediately.

A diagonal scoop by Sandeep Singh found Bradley Shaw just inside the New Zealand half. Shaw, however, messed with the block and Hari Prasad snatched the ball from him. In a burst of brilliant acceleration, Prasad steamed into the circle and beat goalkeeper Kyle Pontifex with an angular hit from the right.

Thereafter, India controlled and dominated the flow, but could not score until seconds before the half-time whistle from a superb transfer of ball. Halappa, from near the left corner flag, backpassed to Vikram Pillay whose diagonal hit into the circle was deflected into the net by Prasad.

The early minutes of the second-half witnessed a series of penalty corners. Shaw came good for the Kiwis while Sandeep replied in kind for India with a nice variation.

The match then swung from end to end with both goalkeepers staying busy in saving attacks by rival forwards.

D’souza, in particular, displayed brilliant agility and reflexes to parry attempts, including two by Hayden Shaw and one by Bevan Hari.

At the other end, the Indians, as in the first-half, penetrated repeatedly and with a sharper finish they could have scored a few more goals. (PTI)

Sharath storms into Brazil Open semis

NEW DELHI, June 25: Achanta Sharath Kamal broke new ground in Indian table tennis when he became the first paddler from the country to reach the semi-finals of an ITTF pro-tour event at Brazil Open in Sao Paulo.

Sharath scored a convincing 4-1 victory over Christophe Bertin, packing off the Frenchman 11-8 7-11 11-9 12-10 11-3 to book his maiden semis appearance in the pro-tour circuit.

In the battle for a berth in the final, Sharath meets another first-timer Korean Lee Jin Kwon, who beat Canada’s Zhang Peng 12-10 11-9 11-8 8-11 14-12.

The 23-year-old lanky paddler from Chennai, who had bagged both the singles and team event gold at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March, thus achieved a new high in his career.

"My attack was strong today, I was powerful," said Sharath, ranked 124, after the match.

"The fourth game was crucial in the match. I was leading by two games to one but christophe was ahead 10-7. I won the next five points and that turned the match in my favour," he said.

Bertin had caused an upset in the second round, beating third seed Bojan Tokic of Slovenia.

But the Indian, who is aiming to break into the top 50 this year, had read the Frenchman’s game well and made him play his weak forehand by pushing him backwards. (AGENCIES)

Dutch upset Aussies, India finish 3rd

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25: The Netherlands orchestrated a blitzkrieg that annihilated Olympic champions and holders Australia 6-2 in the final of the 15th Sultan Azlan Shah hockey tournament here today.

In a shocking reversal of form, the Dutch, who had struggled right through the tournament, turned on the heat and scored at regular intervals to puncture the Aussie bubble.

Attacking with great pace, Powar and precision, the Dutch scored through Roderick Weushtof (6th, 47th, 66th), Taeke Taekema (22nd), Teun De Nooijer (42nd) and Ronald brouwer (52nd).

Australia, winners here four times and the defending champions, were left with no answer to the assault and only in the later stages of the game did they get their bearings to scramble home a couple of goals through Matt Naylor (60th) and Robert Hammond (69th, penalty stroke). But it was all too little too late.

Earlier in the day, India beat New Zealand 3-2 to finish third in the eight-nation tourney. Hari Prasad (8th, 35th) scored a brace while Sandeep Singh (43) also chipped in to star in India’s win. For New Zealand, Simon Child (7th) and Hayden Shaw (39th) netted the goals.

The Dutch displayed their tactical superiority from the beginning as they did not allow the Aussies to function with tight man-to-man marking. And once the Dutch opened the scoring, Australia sank in a veritable flood of goals.

For the Dutch, it was veteran Teun De Nooijer who once again masterminded the victory. With his roaming duties, De Nooijer craftily utilised the smallest of openings in the Aussie defence to pave the way for goals.

It was the first Azlan Shah win for the Dutch in their second attempt but coach Roelant Oltmans played down the success.

"If it was the World Cup final, I would have been the happiest man around. But at this tournament, it did not matter whether you won or lost. The important point was that we got to play together as a team and an important preparatory outing for the World Cup," he said.

On Roderick Weushtof, who was the tournament’s leading goal-scorer and also the player of the tournament, Oltmans said: "I am happy at the way he is developing. He was the leading scorer in our league this year with a tally of 34 from 22 matches. He is also a rare combination of a player who can score field goals and also from penalty corners."

Oltmans expressed surprise at the scoreline.

"Of course I am surprised, even granting that the Australians were not at full strength here. But still, to beat the Olympic champions by such a big margin indeed is a huge surprise," he said.

About the team’s overall performance here, Oltmans said: "We have shown improvement with every match and today, we played extremely well. No doubt, we made a few mistakes in the closing minutes, but overall, I am satisfied with our performance here."

Final positions of teams:

1. The netherlands. 2. Australia. 3. India. 4. New Zealand. 5. Pakistan. 6. Korea. 7. Argentina. 8. Malaysia.

Special prizes: Pakistan (fair play); Roderick Weushtof (the Netherlands, player of the tournament and top goalscorer, 4 goals); Teun De Nooijer (the Netherlands, man of the match). (PTI)

India’s back to the wall after middle order collapse

ST. KITTS, June 25: India were battling with their backs to wall after a dramatic middle order collapse in the first innings on the fourth morning of the third cricket Test against the West Indies here today.

The visitors were gasping at 241 for 6, still 141 runs adrift from avoiding the threat of follow-on and 340 behind the West Indies’ 581 at the Warner Park Stadium.

The experienced VVS Laxman was standing tall and alone amidst the ruins and was unbeaten on 68 after a five-hour vigil during which he faced 187 balls and hit 10 fours.

Jerome Taylor (3-77) sent shockwaves through the Indian camp when he ripped open their batting with three wickets in six balls.

Rahul Dravid (22), Yuvraj Singh (0), Mohammad Kaif (0) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (29) were all cooling their heels in the pavilion as the test was suddenly brought alive.

Dhoni appeared to have weathered the storm after adding 61 runs for the sixth wicket with Laxman when he fell to Corey Collymore (2-37) 20 minutes before the lunch break.

Taylor struck off the fifth ball of his first over when he jagged one back sharply at Dravid and caught him plumb in front of stumps.

His next over was still more dramatic as he took care of the two other recognized batsmen.

Yuvraj Singh hung his bat out at a slanted delivery and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Mohammad Kaif was then ruled out Leg Before Wicket off a delivery which could have been heading down the legside.

Laxman and Dhoni then held their ground stubbornly before the latter became another leg before victim, this time to Corey Collymore.

The two put on 61 runs from nearly 21 overs of hard struggle.

The West Indian quick bowlers prospered on a wicket which had early moisture on it and from the end where Taylor picked his three scalps, the ball also tended to keep abnormally low.

With the wicket deteriorating and full five sessions still left in the game, India seem to have been caught in a cleft in this game. (PTI)

Beckham's free kick lifts England over Ecuador

STUTTGART, June 25: David Beckham scored with a free kick in the 60th minute today to lead England to a 1-0 win over Ecuador and a spot in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Beckham sent in a curling free kick from about 25 metres that beat diving goalkeeper Christian Mora.

England will face either the Netherlands or Portugal on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Beckham became the first Englishman to score in three World Cups - he converted a penalty kick against Argentina in Japan four years and curled in a free kick against Colombia in France in 1998.

The England captain, who had worn short sleeves in the first half, switched to long sleeves after the break. Shortly after the goal, he threw up on the field.

For an hour, the English aimlessly passed the ball, but the game then turned after Edwin Tenorio fouled Frank Lampard outside the penalty area.

Beckham planted the ball ever so carefully as four Ecuadoreans formed a defensive wall.

With expert precision, he got the ball over them. Mora, his cheeks painted with the colors of Ecuador's yellow-blue-and-red flag, dived to his right but could not stop the ball, which went in off the post.

Beckham ran wildly toward the centre of the field, hooking an arm around Ashley Cole.

While Beckham is the driving force of its offence, his goals have been sparse of late. It was just his 17th in 93 international appearances, and he ended a 13-match scoreless streak since his last goal on March 30, 2005.
