Ladakh symbolises with the mechinations
of the Congress led UPA Government at the
Centre towards opposition controlled
states but the happenings of Ladakh are a

Kashmir centric governments have been

coalition Government and alleged that it

for safeguarding minority status of AMU
Excelsior

JAMMU, Jan 8: Former Minister and
senior National Conference leader Abdul
Rahim Rather has expressed serious
concern at the situation developing about
the minority status of Aligarh Muslim
University.
In a press
statement issued here today, the NC
leader appealed the Central Government to
deal with this sensitive issue with
utmost care and caution and take timely
measures to prevent the situation from
taking a bad turn.
Mr Rather
pointed out that this premier educational
institution was the first minority
university established in India way back
in 1920. Its minority character was
determined by its illustrious founder Sir
Sayeed Ahmed Khan himself. He said that
the constitution of our country
recognises the right of the minorities to
establish and foster their educational
and cultural institutions for satisfying
their aspirations and sentiments. The
miniority status of Aligarh Muslim
University (AMU) has been appreciated by
great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi,
Jawahar Lal Nehru, Moulana Azad, Dr Zakir
Hussain and others.
The NC
leader further said that it goes to the
eternal credit of this almameter that it
has provided great vision and
enlightenment to the Muslims as also a
large number of other countrymen
irrespective of caste, creed and colour
in political, academic and cultural
fields. He said J&K has also been a
leading beneficiary of this institution
as almost its entire leadership in
political and intellectual fields has
emerged from this University. He hoped
that steps will be taken to safeguard its
minority status.
