Dungapur does a volte face, praises Ganguly LAHORE, Jan 7: Barely hours after making a scathing attack on Sourav Ganguly by describing him as the "laziest and possibly the worst fielder", the manager of the touring Indian team Raj Singh Dungarpur today sought to control the damage, saying the former captain was a "tremendous batsman" and his experience would help the team during the series against Pakistan. Apparently aware that his stinging remarks against Ganguly last night could have serious repercussions ahead of the crucial series, Dungarpur spoke highly of the left-hander and sought to put the lid on the controversy. "Sourav is a tremendous batsman and his offside play is simply great. His vast experience should help the Indian team in the series against Pakistan," he told reporters at the picturesque Bagh-E-Jinnah ground where the visitors are playing their only warm-up game before the Test series. Dungarpur, perceived to be against Ganguly during the time of the acrimoniuous Cricket Board elections, got angry when one TV scribe asked him whether he changed his opionion of the former India captain after having made the disparaging remarks to a TV channel yesterday. "My integrity to Indian cricket has never been questioned in the 30-year-long association I have had as an administrator. Ask any of these journalists who know me," he fumed at the scribe. "If someone known to me comes and asks some questions I might have said something in private, but to show it on TV seems like the instructions have come from the Eden Gardens (headquarters of Cricket Association of Bengal President Jagmohan Dalmiya)," he said. In the controversial television comments last night, Dungapur had called Ganguly as one of the laziest cricketers and even claimed that former coach John Wright did not want him as captain but could not get him removed. "Sourav is not a student of the game. He is also not a role model of a captain. A captain cannot be the laziest and possbily the worst fielder of the side", Dungarpur had said. The former BCCI Chief said Wright had "expressed his frustrations several times" to him about Ganguly but he was too "mild" to succeed in getting Ganguly out. Ganguly and three other players, including vice captain Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble and Parthiv Patel, are slated to join the team later today after playing in the sixth round Ranji Trophy league ties at home. Talking to PTI later, Dungarpur said the Indian team was a happy unit and credit needs to be given to team captain Rahul Dravid and coach Greg Chappell, besides the mentoring role being adopted by Sachin Tendulkar in moulding the outfit. "It's going to be a tremendous series between India and Pakistan, but I suspect the batsmen from both sides would dominate the show and I'm speaking from a bowler's heart," he added. (PTI) |
Imran congratulates Tendulkar for his 35th Test century LAHORE, Jan 7: The legendary Imran Khan congratulated Sachin Tendulkar for his world record feat of 35 Test centuries when the two greats came across in a PIA flight enroute to Pakistan. The former Pakistan skipper will be giving his expert comments on the forthcoming Pakistan-India series to a Dubai-based TV channel and will be based in Dubai for the first Test to be played in Lahore. India will play three Tests and five one-dayers in Pakistan during their 46-day tour. (PTI) |
Jaffer pleased to start on a good note LAHORE, Jan 7: Wasim Jaffer, vying for the opener's slot, was hoping his performance in the tour-game against Pakistan `A' today would hold him in good stead when India go into the Test series. Jaffer also expressed happiness over his own effort in making a half century and the team's overall in putting 298 for four on the opening day of the three-dayer. "I am happy with my performance. The wicket was good to bat on though there was some movement earlier on. And Umar Gul also bowled well. He's an international quality bowler," Jaffer told reporters after the opening day's play's at the Bagh-e-Jinnah ground here. Kamal fought lone battle in BSF win Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 7: Kamal Kishore today converted a losing battle into a winning game for the BSF Jammu Frontier turning the tables against the professional side of Jammu and Kashmir Bank thus paving way for the final of 3rd Banarsi Dass Memorial Football Championship being organised by Young Hero Club at GGM Science College here. The BSF sleuth who enjoyed the crowd support in their favour defeated the J&K Bank 6-5. In the stipulated time, Kamal brought BSF out of the troubled waters after scoring an equaliser making a left-footer banana shot right into the net beating the guard at the net badly. The goal scored by Kamal was being considered as best goal of the tournament which got thunderous applause from the crowd. Earlier, the J&K Bank dominated the first half by taking the lead in the 19th minute when S Rizwan netted the ball from left flank. The first half play also witnessed two yellow cards shown to Kuljeet and Shahnwaz by the centre referee. However, the BSF men equalised the lead when Kamal Kishore made the all important goal in the 65th minute by taking a kick from 30 yards. To decide the fate of the match, organisers gave the teams extra time, which again could not yield any result thereby forcing the match to be decided through tie-breaker. The result only came in sudden death after the tie-breaker ended in equal score of 5-5. Likewise in the field game, J&K Bank was leading by 3-2, but a brilliant save by Kamal, who replaced the goal-keeper to guard the net, brought BSF back to the game. And then a save and a goal turned the losing battle into victory for BSF. R K Paul, Anoop Shah, Kamal Kishore, Tamapan Chakroborty and Anoop Thapa were successful shooters from BSF while Dharminder Singh missed.
