Falling standards of education I Sir, This refers to news item "CM warns Govt teachers to fall in line or face action that appeared in 5th February 2006 edition of the Daily Excelsior. The Chief Minister's comments about the falling standards of education in Govt Schools have nothing in special. Day in and day out we often read that Govt has taken serious view of the falling standards of education & poor results shown by the Govt Schools. But it is quite surprising that none of the so-called luminaries be it politicians or bureaucrats seem to have visualized the truth behind it. The message is clear that nobody is interested to find out the actual reasons behind the falling standards of education in Govt Schools and poor results thereof. The Chief Minister who declared in a function organized by a local private school that he will himself retain the education portfolio to put the system back on rails, does not seem to be interested to put the system back on rail in reality. Had be been really serious to improve the lot of Govt schools he would have called for public opinion to find out the truth as to what is going wrong with the education department. Why there is degradation of education in Govt schools? Who is to be blamed for this? The Chief Minister may have his own view point about the falling standard of education in Govt Schools but I attribute following factors/reasons responsible for degradation of education in Govt. schools. Most of the stuff available in the Govt Schools now - days, belongs to under privileged class of society, Class-IV employees and the people below poverty line. How you expect that such parents who are themselves illiteate will guide their children properly in studies. On the other hand children studying in Pvt. schools are properly guided by their parents besides that they could afford specialized coaching/tuitions. It is obvious that such children will definitely excel in their lives. Than what is the greatness of these so called class schools. It is quite easy for any one to educate the educated but difficult to educate the totally illiterates. Who is responsible for poor stuff in the Govt schools? Incidentally it is not the teacher but poor planning of the Govt. Who has to provide basic infrastructure in the schools comprising of basic amenities like safe drinking water, fans, toilets and rooms? Is the poor teacher responsible for providing infrastructure in the Schools? The rooms available in most of the Govt. schools are not even worth for animals. No school provides drinking water what to talk of safe drinking water. Most of the Govt Schools run in the open air where the students are expected to study under chilly conditions or facing scorching heat. On the contrary Pvt. Schools provides very good infrastructure and all the basic needs like safe drinking water, fans, coolers and well-furnished rooms apart from proper transport facility. Tell us Chief Minister Sahib as to why the parents will send their wards to Govt Schools. Small size of families is also one of the key factors. Now-a-days most of the parents have one or two children. Every parent is enthusiastic to see his child getting all sorts of comforts in the school and is exposed to competitive way of life. Under these circumstances why the parents will send their children to Govt Schools which lake basic facilities and sports activities. Lastly I attribute the major reason for poor result due to the poor transfer policy in Govt Education department. These are other factors as well which need to be looked into. Yours etc.... II Sir, Let me voice directly that first you put your own children in Govt. Schools/Colleges and then talk about raising the educational standard of these schools. It sounds strange and deceptive that you are not to taste the quality you are providing others. Much is thought and little is done that too half-heartedly by every successive Government to bring change and improve the educational quality particulary in Government run schools. Everyone in Government talks loud on the most important and sensitive issue. The masses are assured every now and then of better education. But every-time every statement is proved fake and futile exercise. In fact, the education in Government schools has become a mockery. The same old song is often sung by every successive Government to raise the educational standard in Government Institutions. Various rules and measures are framed and adopted. But the hopes still are misty and results out of sight. Constitutionally the words "Compulsory Education" have been used frequently and given much weight to obtain the noble objection of literacy in a better way. But unfortunately due to obvious reasons the desired results are never obtained. Though huge funds and much energy is spent for the purpose. Instead, the Education quality in Government schools has downgraded to an alarming stage where one really feels ashamed and shocked. The reasons are multifaceted. We should not forget that if the wrong practices in the Medical department pain the people, the mismanagement in the Education Department makes them scream. Unless some bold and hard decisions are taken the much talked objectives in this sphere can never be achieved. If the people representatives at the helm of affairs are really true, sincere and honest on the agenda then every one in the Government, particularly in Education Department, from Chief Minister and Education Minister to a school peon should first put his own ward in Government Schools. They should set an example and repose confidence and faith in the Education Department and its functioning which they themselves govern and manage. If they themselves feel shy and have no faith and regard for their own system how the others can? The experience show that the things can never be streamlined by mere paper work. Yours etc...... |
