Avinish claims Men's title in Badminton tourney Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 30: Avinish Sharma claimed Mens Singles title defeating Vikram Saini in the final of the Jammu City and District Badminton Championship which concluded at Badminton Hall, M A Stadium today. The finals set score was 21-15 and 21-16. Diksha outclassed Vandana by 21-19, 13-21 and 21-17 to clinch Junior Girls title. In Veteran Doubles, the duo of Som Raj and Balbir beat Khajuria and Sayal by 15-21, 21-14 and 22-20. In Veteran Singles, Som Raj trounced Balbir Jamwal by 21-14, 18-21 and 21-16 to win the title. In Junior Girls doubles, Diksha and Vandana defeated Akanksha and Kanika by 21-17 and 21-19. In Sub Junior Girls doubles, Akanksha and Dipakshi beat Manisha and Sulakhni by 20-22, 21-12 and 21-18 in a keen contest to clinch the title. In Sub Junior Girls singles final, Akanksha defeated Sulakhni by 21-15 and 21-14. Sahil beat Gagandeep by 8-21, 21-17 and 21-17 to win Junior Boys singles title. In Sub Junior doubles final, Rohit and Shubam lost to D S Chouhan and Aman by 18-21 and 5-21. Rohit claimed Junior Boys singles title defeating Ashish by 17-21, 21-13 and 21-19. Manisha and Aman Sharma claimed Mini Girls and Mini Boys titles respectively. Manisha defeated Prabhjot by 21-14 and 21-14 whereas Aman beat Shubam by 21-16 and 21-14. Ravinder Gupta, Secretary, State Sports Council was the chief guest on the occasion, who gave away prizes to the winner and runner up shuttlers. Dr O D Sharma, General Secretary, J&K Badminton Association, Pardeep Sankhyadar, General Secretary, Jammu City and District Badminton Association, Balbir Jamwal, Sat Pal Sharma (SAI Badminton Coach) were also present. |

Pardeep crowned 2-stroke
Champion Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 30: Pardeep Majotra emerged winner in 2-stroke category final with a timing of 10.42 minutes followed by Amar Deep Singh and Shyam Sharma, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively with timings of 10.41 and 11.07 minutes. The final was a real thriller as Amardeep gave tough fight to Pardeep especially in the final lapses. The other finalists in the 2-S category were Vishal Sharma, Sandeep Manhas, Rahul Bharti and Arun Manhas. Paras Bhat was disqualified as he lost his control over his bike. In 4-stroke category, Amar Deep Singh finished first by taking 10.54 minutes. Alok Makhnotra and Simran Singh had to remain contented with 2nd and 3rd positions respectively with timings of 11.10.15 and 11.10.25 minutes. Dr SP Vaid, IGP, Jammu Zone was the chief guest on the occasion, who gave away winner and runner up trophies to the bikers. Earlier, he was introduced with the bikers of both 2-S and 4-S and also flagged off both the races. J&K Senior National Tug-of-War team selected Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Tug-of-War Association has selected two teams in different weight categories for the forthcoming 19th Senior National Tug-of-War Championship scheduled to be held at Hyderabad (AP) from January 1 to 5, 2007. Before selection, the J&K Tug-of War Association had organised 10 day long camp at Unique Public Higher Secondary School, Gadi Garh in which 45 students took part. S Hardeep Singh Anand, President, J&K Tug-of-War Association, Ravinder Singh Sasan, Wasim Raja, S Jodh Singh Isher and D N Chauhan were present during selection of the teams. Hardeep Singh Anand distributed kits to the players before their departure. The kits were sponsored by Bharat Small Arms Pvt Ltd, Kathua. The Team: Narinder Jasbir, Aruan, Tanvir, Naveed, Manpreet, Suheel Ahmad, Ghulam Mohi-U-Din-Bhat, Jeeshan, Narinder, Harpreet, Amardeep, Sandeep, Mandeep, Davinder Kour, Sangeta, Monika, Sarabjeet and Anita. Rajinder Singh and Mohd Aslam are accompanying the team as Coach and Manager respectively while the teams are being led by Ravinder Singh Sasan, General Secretary of the association. Semifinal line up drawn in Chess tourney Excelsior Sports Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Dec 30: The semifinal line has been drawn in the ongoing IX Open Chess Tournament being organised by the J&K Rural Development Society, district Udhampur in the memory of late Om Parkash Kalsotra. In U/19 Girls category, Jagriti of National Academy defeated Diksha Sharma in a keen contest. In U/19 Boys, Jitendra Singh and Sourav Sharma are leading the points table with 4 and 4.5 points respectively while Abhishek Nayal is also not far behind with 3 points in his kitty. However, Pallvi and Indu reached final in U/14 Girls category by virtue of their wins in the semifinals. Pallvi outclassed Monica in 40 moves while Indu overpowered Anu in 27 moves. The arbitors in the matches were Surinder Kumar, Rajeshwar Kumar, Navin Kumar, Rakesh Sanmotra and Ravinder Tripathi. |

Debate, cultural programme held Excelsior Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Dec 30: Imtiaz Ahmed, Parun Sharma and Arun Singh in junior group while Miss Nasreen Kausar, Miss Seema Gupta and Mr. Joginder Singh in senior group who bagged first, second and third positions respectively in a debate contest on the topics " National Integration and "Role of News Papers in the Society" organized by the District Information Centre, Doda at Government Degree College, Ramban, yesterday. Principal Degree College, Ramban, B.L. Suri was the chief guest on the occasion. He appreciated the efforts of the Information Department for organizing the function in the institution. Besides this, Prof. Farooq Ahmed also spoke on the occasion. However the Information Department also organized a colorful cultural programme in Higher Secondary School, Ramban. Number of local artists presented Dogri,Pogli, Punjabi and Himchali songs on the occasion Among others, Prof. Saleem Iqbal, Mr. Zabir Hussian and Professors and teaching staff and students of different educational institutions besides locals witnessed the cultural programme. |
