Sehr wins consolation prize in Painting Competition

JAMMU, Dec 20: Sehr Gupta, a class IV student of Heritage School, Sainik Colony, won consolation prize in National Level Painting Competition on "Energy Conservation" held in Delhi on December 12. She received a consolation prize of Rs 5,000. She also excelled in the state and district level painting competitions by winning a cash prize of Rs 1,500 and 10,000 respectively.

Heritageans also performed well in the recently concluded "On the Spot Children’s Music Competition" organised by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages at Abhinav Theatre. Bhavya Gaur and Ritambari Puri were awarded Certificates of Merit.

Vengsarkar happy that Ganguly wasn’t "bounced out"

DURBAN, Dec 20: Selection Committee chairman Dilip Vengsarkar was happy to see that Sourav Ganguly was not "bounced out" as was expected ahead of the Wanderers test last week.

"Everyone had presumed that he would be bounced out on these pitches but he did very well," remarked Vengsarkar, reflecting on India’s historic test win, their first on South African soil.

"He stood his ground. He took time to get moving but it was an exceptional performance."

Ganguly’s return to international cricket has been highly impressive and the decision to recall the former skipper to the test squad has been largely credited to Vengsarkar. (PTI)

HP demolishes J&K in style

JAMMU, Dec 20: Himachal Pradesh demolished hosts J&K by an innings and 75 runs to register a comfortable win on the fourth and final day of the Ranji Trophy Cricket match being played at GGM Science College Hostel Ground today.

J&K was bundled out for 222 runs in 78.4 overs in their 2nd innings. Earlier, resuming at their overnight total of 166 for 5, J&K lost yesterday’s not out batsman Vijay Sharma on 11. Hardeep Singh, the other unbeaten batsman played reasonable today to complete his half century. He made 52 runs with the help of 8 fours.

Once again, the middle order suffered a serious collapse as 3 of their batsmen went back to the pavilion without opening their account. They were Sami-ul-Ullah, Sameer Khajuria and and Jagtar Singh.

Abid Nabi made 9 runs. For HP, Sarandeep, who bowled a magical spell in the first innings to scalp 6 wickets also took 3 wickets today at crucial junctures to making his tally of total 9 wickets in the match. Besides him, Ashok Thakur, Vikram Jeet Malik and Vishal Bhatia took 2 wickets each.

Xavier Public School celebrates Annual day

JAMMU, Dec 20: Xavier Public School celebrated its Annual Day by organising an impressive and colourful function in the school premises at Khanpur, Nagrota.

On the occasion, a bonanza of cultural and entertaining items was presented by the school students. Dogri dance, Bhangra, patriotic songs, skits and play were main highlights of the programme.

ZEO Dansal, who was chief guest on the occasion, distributed prizes among the students who had excelled in academic or extra-curricular activities.

Earlier, the programme started with lighting of ceremonial lamp and presentation of annual report of the school in which its achievements were highlighted.

Vote of thanks was presented by Principal Dr Chand Trehan.

RCA clinches Twenty-20 Cricket Cup

JAMMU, Dec 20: Roshni Cricket Academy (RCA) thrashed KAWA-Vijaypur by 93 runs in the final to clinch GKR Memorial Twenty-20 Cricket Tournament played at GGM Science College today.

RCA won the toss and decided to bat first. They posted challenging 159/4 in the stipulated 20 overs. Manish Dogra was the top scorer with 33 runs. He struck 4 hits to the fence. Vimarsh Kaw and Ram Dayal also contributed useful 29 and 30 runs respectively.

For KAWA-Vijaypur, Sonu and Varun grabbed 2 and 1 wicket respectively.

In reply, KAWA-Vijaypur was bundled out for just 66 runs in 18.1 overs. Anil Balgotra played a fighting knock of 23 runs while Sukjinder also played well for his 12 runs.

For RCA, Dilbagh Singh scalped 3 wickets whereas Manish, Ram Dayal and Mohit Puri took 2 wickets each. The umpires in the match were Santa Singh and Pappu Dogra. The scorers were R K Gupta and B B Verma.

Ram Dayal was adjudged as the Man of the Series. Vimarsh Kaw was adjudged as the Man of the Match. Dilbagh Singh was declared as the best bowler of the tournament whereas Sunil was adjudged as the best fielder.

Omar Abdullah, President, J&K National Conference was the chief guest on the occasion, who gave away the winner and runner up trophy to the teams. Ajay Sadhotra, senior NC leader was the Guest of Honour.

The tournament was sponsored by Shree Toyota, Indian Oil Corporation, Pepsi, Jammu Motors and Sangari Automobiles.

KC Public School (Junior) celebrates Annual Day

JAMMU, Dec 20: KC Public School (Junior wing) today celebrated its 9th Annual Day with great pomp and show.

A colourful cultural bonanza was the gala treat for the eyes of one and all. The programme began with Vandana, performed beautifully by young KCeans. It was followed by a number of dances, songs, plays and skits. The students displayed their talent through various items. The special thing about the programme was that all the items were theme based.

Students of LKG, UKG and class I conveyed the message of protecting environment and wild life while class II and III depicted the customs and life style of the people of J&K. Class IV and V displayed the culture and traditions of different countries of the world.

On the occasion, the ‘Roll of Honour’ awards were also conferred upon the meritorious students by Minister for Rural Development Jugal Kishore Sharma and Anil Goswami, who were the chief guest and guest of honour, respectively.

Earlier, the school Principal Jorawar Singh presented the annual report of KC Public School and highlighted achievements of the institution in academics as well as various competitive events

The Principal also announced that a pre-nursery school ‘Pravesh Vatika’ for the kids of 2-3 years, is being opened within the school campus from the forthcoming session.

KC International School organises ‘Sur-Sangam 2006’

JAMMU, Dec 20: An Inter-school music competition ‘Sur-Sangam -2006’ was held in KC International School, here today.

Around 20 leading school of Jammu participated in the competition. Central attraction of the programme was the performance of Pt Bhajan Sopori who was accompanied by his son Abhay Sopori and Ragini Rainu.

Students of the KC International presented Saraswati Vandana which was followed by scintillating performance by students of other schools also.

In category-1, JK Public School team was adjudged first while the second and third place were secured by Delhi Public School and KC International, respectively.

In category-2, KC International School clinched the first place while Jain Higher Secondary School and Delhi Public School were declared second and third, respectively.

Harish Kaila, Sammy and Renu Saigal were in the panel of judges.

Dr Veena Gupta, Principal of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, who was chief guest on the occasion, appreciated the performance of budding talents of Jammu.

Earlier, Principal of KC International S Sarkar presented a formal welcome address. Vote of thanks was delivered by Chaitanya Chowdhary, chairman of the school.

The programme concluded with singing of Vande Matram.

Jammu wins Gymnastics Championship

JAMMU, Dec 20: Jammu claimed overall championship by securing 292 points as the 3 day long J&K State Gymnastics Championship was concluded at Indoor Sports Complex, M A Stadium today. Model Academy Claimed Junior Boy’s title in Team Aerobics while J K Public School, Kunjwani and Lawrence Public School, Panjtirti finished 2nd and third respectively in the same section.

In Senior Team Championship in Artistic Gymnastics, BSF Paloura secured first position while Jammu finished runner up.

Manpreet Kour stood first in Senior Girls in Aerobic Gymnastics followed by Seema Mehra and Tanu Andotra, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In Boys section, Manvinder Singh fetched first position whereas Jaskaran Singh and Gourav Sharma finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In Senior Boys Artistic Gymnastics, Tilak Raj (BSF) bagged first place while Manvinder Singh (Jammu) and Sunil Kumar (BSF) stood 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In Girls section, Sukhwinder Kour (Kathua) stood first followed by Jasleen Kour and Sneha Kangotra of Jammu had to contented with 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

Babu Singh, Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports was the chief guest on the occasion, who gave away medals to the winner and runner up gymnasts. Ravinder Gupta, Secretary State Sports Council, Siddharth Sharma, Joint Secretary, J&K State Sports Council, Rajan Sharma, Sudhir Kumar, Krishan Lal Sharma and other members of State Sports Council were also present. The chief guest also honoured gymnasts of the state who performed well in various National and International Gymnasts Championships.

International Gymnasts: S. Waryam Singh, Preeti Pooja, Sonia Sharma, Harleen Singh, Sonal Gupta, Kamal Singh, Manvinder Singh, Jaskaran Singh, Manpreet Kour, Seema Mehra and Mayank Jain.

National Medalists: Sakshi Kotwal Moza, Atul Sharma, Tanvinder Kour, Indeep Kour, Asmita, Sukhwinder Kour and Mitali.
