Shameema Azad’s two albums set to
launch after three decades

JAMMU, Dec 17: From the cacophony-filled world of politics back to music—for Shameema Azad, wife of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Gulam Nabi Azad, December 20 will mark the end of a three-decade wait for admirers of her songs when two of her albums are released here.

The albums come after she mesmerized Kashmir with her solo musical concert on peace -‘Mauj Kisheer’ - a song on everybody’s lips in the State.

"After three long decades, Shameema Azad has sung in two albums—one Kashmiri and another in Dogri language—which will be released at a function here on December 20", young Santoor maestro and composer Abhay Rustum Sopori said here.

The Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts is bringing out the albums which will see Shameema Azad singing along with fresher and younger musicians Shazia Ahmed, Jemeela Khan and Abdul Rashed Farash in Kashmiri album "Aaluv", Sopori said.

In the Dogri album, Shameema would sing along with Ragni Renu, Riaz Ahmed, Kaliash Mehra, Sopori said adding both the albums have been composed and produced by famous Santoor maestro Pandit Bhajan Sopori.

Besides this, a third album "Shajaar" based on Kashmir folk music sung by Abdu Rasheed Hafiz would also be released on the same day here by the Governor S K Sinha.

"It is home coming for Shameema Azad after thirty long years of her busy time in the political milieu. By doing this, she would returning to the people of Jammu and Kashmir what she has inherted from her motherland", Abhay, the son of Pandit Bhajan Sopori said.

Shameema used to sing regularly for All India Radio before getting married to Gulam Nabi Azad.

Her first album ‘Shajaar’ is a mixture of Kashmiri folk songs with revolutionary tinge and has a 6-song format, Sopori said adding the three new albums have been made in order to focus on international market.

"All of them have been made keeping in view the international market. Folk mode is not disturbed by experimentation of tracks in the background", he said.

‘Aaluv’ - a light music album sung by Shameema Azad and others is based on nine songs.

Similarly, the Dogri album with nine songs is the first experiment keeping in view the international market and youth.

All the albums would be available around the world in cassettes and CDc and later video CDs of these albums would be brought out, Sopori said. (PTI)

Muslim Youth Federation demands white
paper on Haj pilgrimage expenditures

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Dec 17: Alleging irregularities in the management of Haj pilgrimage, Muslim Youth Federation Jammu and Kashmir, has demanded a white paper on the details of expenditures being made by the State Government on the Haj pilgrims.

Talking to media persons, here today, Tazeem Dar, president of Muslim Youth Federation, accused the State Haj Committee of cheating the Hajis from Jammu who, he claimed, were accommodated in class II and class III category during the pilgrimage despite charging for category I.

"Under category I, which is generally opted by elderly and physically weak Hajis, the Haj Committee charged more than Rs 95 thousand per head promising to provide them luxurious facilities during journey and stay at Mecca but from the very beginning of the pilgrimage from Jammu they were extended ordinary facilities while at Mecca, they were accommodated around 15 kms from the Haram Sharief," he said.

Listing more such cases, Nazir Ahmed Ganai, a Municipal councilor from Thanamandi who also addressed the press conference, said that the second batch of Hajis from Rajouri, which stayed at a hotel in Srinagar, last night was not served dinner till late night while none of the member of the Haj Committee bothered to visit and enquire about them.

However, on the other hand, he alleged, members of the official delegation on Haj are provided all luxurious facilities on the Government expenditure and the money charged from Hajis.

"It all indicates that poor and innocent Muslims of Jammu division are being cheated and taken for a ride by the State Government and its Haj Committee," Mr Dar said and demanded resignation of Minister for Haj and Auqaf Peerzada Mohd Sayeed.

The Muslim Youth Federation also expressed reservations over taking the Jammu Hajis to Srinagar for their further pilgrimage and demanded that Jammu Hajis be taken to Delhi which suits them.

Erratic electricity in Bhadarwah

On behalf of the students of Bhadarwah I would like to bring to the kind attention of the authorities towards the problem of students as a result of erratic supply of electricity in Bhadarwah. The student community faces great hardships in the area because of the irregular supply of the electricity. The problem is increased because the examinations are fast approaching and that in the absence of the electricity the students cannot read or write. It is known that students normally read during the evening hours and it is in these hours when electricity is most needed. Also due to the unavailability of Kerosine oil it is still more difficult to light kerosine lamps or even LPG based lights. We thus request the Power Development Department to kindly look into our problem/symphathetically and regulate the supply of electricity in the Bhadarwah. We request the authorities that kindly give us a chance to read and prepare.

Open more Agriculture Stores

The vast agriculture belt of Krimachi-Mansar does not have any agriculture store other than the one located at Mansar. Some villages in this area are as far away as 40 to 60 kms from this agriculture store. The people of the far flung areas thus have no reach to modern seeds and pesticides. During the times of Kharif and Rabi season the farmers face great hardships because they do not have access to the departmental stores where they could get better seeds as well as fertilizers. They are not in knowledge about the programmes of the agriculture department like Demonstration plots etc. During any insect or pest attack these farmers of far flung areas do not get pesticides and fungicides. It is thus requested that at least three or four agriculture stores be opened in the area so that farmers get access to the modern and healthy seeds etc.

Repair Aap Shambu road

The sacred temple of Aap Shambu is drawing hundreds of pilgrims daily. On Mondays and on other sacred days people throng the temple in huge numbers. The unfortunate part is that from Roop Nagar to the temple gate the road is full of pot holes and in a state of utter dis repair. For the last one year or so the road has not been repaired. The passage of traffic on this road is severely impaired. It is thus requested that keeping in view the sanctity of the place and the number of yatries or vehicles who use this road, it is necessary that this road is repaired and black topped. Otherwise, if due attention is not paid to this road a time will come when the concerned department will have to rebuilt the road a new entailing huge expenditure. It is hence need of the hour to repair this road soon for the benefit of all. Hope the authorities will take notice of the request.

Vishwabharti colony sans roads

The colony of Vishwabharti at Akalpur is fast coming up as a densely populated area. On one side it connects Muthi area while as on the other it connects the vast population center of Anand Nagar, Udeywalla etc. Thus the Central location of this colony makes it a favourite route for transit to these places. Besides that the colony has some two thousand souls. But unfortunately the lanes and roads of this locality are unpaved. We approached the concerned authorities many times but only promises were made but no work was started. The colony becomes full of slush and mud during even a slight drizzle. The passage of tractors etc through these unpawed roads makes them even more difficult to walk on. It is thus requested to the concerned authorities to kindly
