President's advice

Sir,

The advice of the President of prepare fully in the eventuality of a war (DE, Dec. 10) should be taken very seriously. At an impressive and all important place like the IMA Supreme Commander of armed forces asked the nation to prepare for nuke, chemical and even biological war. It should not be construed that the President has pressed any panic button and has thus made his mind speak on the issue. It is not so at the least. The President is known for his candour and foresight. In fact the scientist and a futuristic planner in him was foretelling the demands that our armed forces will have to meet in the eventuality of a war.

The rapid advancement in scientific research has now made the war more lethal and brief. The role of hightech weapons, precision munitions and highly accurate delivery system need to be developed. The President was also making the armed forces aware of the threat perceptions. The immediate neighbourhood of our country is full of risk and danger groups who can have access to nuke or chemical weapons apart from the other States. So the army needs to develop its capability to counter as well as thrust the possible use of such weapons.

Naina Thug Lenge

Sir,

In the Sunday Edition of this newspaper (Dec 10) an article had been published under the caption 'Sacred space', titled' Naina Thug Lenge' written by Shail Gulhati. The author had used a very simple expression and worked on it to develop in into a master piece. The author while referring to Omkara actually wanted to convey something deeper in meaning as well as in relevance. The problem of the ultimate reality which always hides itself under several cloaks. The seeker is unable to fathom its real essence or meaning till he attains that State of inner eye or vision where he cannot be deceived by external eyes. What he perceives in that State of absolute bliss is his own Prakasha merged with Vimarsha what the Shaivas call the State of absolute Shivahood.

Otherwise as the author has himself underlaid that we go on seeing what is not real or surreal or mere illusion. He has aptly given the example of the light of a star that must have died long before but its light reaches us today. What we see is a live star within a time frame of present but actually it has already been past with that star as it may have already been collapsed. So it is best to look inwards as the great mystic Lal Ded has said otherwise Naina Thug Lenge.

Final tally

Sir,

The Doha Asian games have come to an end. India sent its largest contingent to the games so far. In the end we have won about fifty eight medals. Ten golds for that matter. The exploits of the Indian sportsmen were even praised in the Parliament. We achieved top positions in the shooting, archery, tennis, chess, Kabbadi, but failed where we should have won especially in wrestling and hockey. In some sports like squash and athletics ours was an average show. In Bowling where India sent its first team they put up a spirited show. The moment of pride for us was when our ace shooter Jaspal Rana was declared athlete or sportsman of the games. His individual haul of three gold medals brought glory to the game. But we should not forget that we have finished eighth in the medal tally. Some smaller countries like Thailand and Kazakistan or even Iran and above us in the table. This makes an important message for us. The better you do in the sports arena the greater respect you earn.

Besides it makes a nation healthy. For a nation with a population of 1.1 billion people to get ten golds and finish eighth in the table does not make too much a happy reading to be proud of . The sports policy needs radical change. Sooner the better.

A welcome step

Sir,

Jammu based political parties joint meet is a welcome step (DE 6-12-06). It is suggested in addition, that they should prepare workable plan for Jammu development with available resources with practical steps to eradicate corruption along with role of common man and administration.

This step will ensure a single powerful voice of all the parties who makes same claims individually without any collective force and constructive suggestions.

Let all well wishers of Jammu put their thoughts together and work with single minded devotion for all their demands from the Government.

Yours etc...
