Polluting
factories
Sir,
The news report published in
this paper about the closure of five
factories by State Pollution Control
Board (Dec 7) is a timely act. There are
many industrial units in different
industrial areas of the State which
pollute the environment. The toxic fumes
and effluents which these units throw out
make air, soil and water polluted. Due to
the lack of interest as well as will
these units have been at liberty to do
whatever they like.
Although the state
industrial policy speaks about the need
to undustrialize the state so that
employment is generated but not at the
cost of the environment. When we are so
much concerned about the automobile
pollution and as a result we insist on
having Euro-I, Euro-II or even Euro III
vehicles why cannot we have similar
pollution checks for our industries. In
majority of cases the proper equipment to
control chimeny smoke and pollution is
not used by the industrial units. The
effluents which come out of the
industries is not treated in majority of
cases. The polluted water enters our
fields, water sources then making us pay
with our health and lives. The State
Pollution Board deserves kudos for its
drive against the culprit factories and
this drive should be extended to other
industrial areas of the State also
without delay.

Vehicle
lifters
Sir,
Police Department deserves
praise for its efforts to trace and
recover stolen motorcycles along with the
vehicle lifter (DE, Dec 7). Now a days
the loss of vehicles either two wheelers
or four wheelers is on the increase. The
news of a particular vehicle been lifted
and report registered has become a norm
now.
In fact many inter state
gangs operate who are equipped with
master keys and other equipment to open
the door of a vehicle and take it away.
In many cases if the thieves fail to
drive away the vehicle they steal
stereos, types and other valuable
strappings or accessories. There are many
such incidents which go unnoticed of
obvious reasons. But the police as in the
above mentioned case must take this
problem seriously. The police with the
help of traffic department must launch a
drive against such organised or otherwise
gangs and bring them to book. On their
part the public or say vehicle owners
must develop also a sense of
responsibility.
They should keep the vehicle
in the parking area earmarked for the
same and never park vehicles in the
roadside or in secluded spots. This is
the joint duty of all us so that we give
a minimum chance to the vehicle lifter to
do his dirty job.

Bahu
fort Aquarium
Sir,
The project of the
construction of a grand aquarium at
Bahufort (DE,Dec 6) will help the people
in many ways. For the department of Parks
and Garden it will generate money in lieu
of the entry fee which I think will be
there if at all should be nominal.
Secondly it will add another
feather to the Jammu city for being the
first aquarium of its kind in the State.
The project which is proposed to be
spread over thirty kanals of land will
offer real time opportunities to watch
different kinds of fish. It is now
observed that people have started showing
interest in aquariums. Many homes and
other business or academic establishments
keep aquariums. It is a source of
beautification as well as entertainment.
But as such home based aquarium are very
small the variety of fish in them is
limited. The Bahu Fort aquarium will
house, hopefully, so hundreds of fishes
and other aquatic animals. It will help
the people especially school and college
students to improve their knowledge about
aquatic life in addition to
entertainment. It is hoped that the
aquarium will boost the scientific spirit
among the students and will give an
opportunity to the local researcher to
study various forms of aquatic life.
Yours
