Illicit
timber
Sir,
The news report about the
illicit felling in timber (DE, Nov. 29)
reveals a continuous pattern in
destroying the forest wealth of the
State. The seizure of 1000 cft of illicit
timber in the news report proves beyond
doubt that the clandestine felling of
forests is continuing. The Valley has
almost been demanded of the green wealth
for which it was once famous. Similarly
the position is not satisfactory in the
Jammu Division. Here too largescale
illegal felling has been reported.
The Forest Protection Force
and Vigilance Organisation has done
commendable job in effecting the seizure
of the illicit timber. But we cannot
brush aside the unholy nexus between some
persons in the various agencies of the
Government and the smugglers. Without the
tacit understanding and connivance of
some blacksheep in the concerned
department the large scale felling of
trees cannot be done. So it is important
that the Government should galvanise its
machinery and launch a full blooded
programme to eradicate the menace of
timber smuggling. Surprise checks,
sustained patrols and continuous
surveillance are needed to put a stop to
such activities.

Security
lapse
Sir,
An amazing news report
published in this newspaper (Dec. 3)
about the voyage of a Pakistan youth
through the length and breadth of our
country without getting detected speaks
for itself about the security environment
of our country. The point of satisfaction
is only that even after remaining
unnoticed for the whole journey in which
he went even to Bangladesh and came back
to Kolkata is that finally he was
arrested by the security forces when he
was trying to sneak into Pakistan. Such
security lapses do not make a good
reading at all. It is perhaps due to such
security lapses that many incidents have
happened which otherwise could have been
avoided and many innocent lives could
have been saved. This incident has laid
bare the loop holes of the security
apparatus.
The intelligence agencies
and the security forces must beef up
their resources and take all measures
that are needed so that such incidents do
not happen again. It is the last thing
that we can afford given the State of
militancy and terrorism present in our
State and country.

Railway Station
Sir,
The article published in the
Sunday Edition of this news paper titled,
''Jammu Railway Station. (Dec. 3)'' was
timely. The article highlighted the
problems facing the Jammu Railwaystation.
It is common knowledge that Jammu Railway
Station is one of the busiest Railway
stations in the Northern zone. It caters
to the pilgrim places like Mata Vaishno
Devi, Amar Nath Ji, as well as to the
lakhs of tourist who visit the State.
Besides that thousands of security
personnel who are posted in the State
also use this rail head for their home
bound or duty bound journey. As such the
station needs a complete revamp. The main
problem that the people are facing in the
acute shortage of functional reservation
counters. Although at the station
reservation center there are many
reservation counters but at a time only a
few counters are working the rest are non
functional.
In addition to it the
railway authorities had decided to open
newer reservation counters in the city
and its suburbs but nothing is happening
in this regard. The station itself needs
spacious waiting halls for second class
as well as other class travellers so that
they can wait till the departure or
arrival of the trains. Otherwise the
people sit on the platforms and even
sleep their which hinders the movement of
fellow travellers.
