Dream
project
Sir,
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi
Shrine Board deserves all praise for
starting many projects of immense
significance. First the setting up of
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University was a
feather in the cap of the Board and now
the setting up of 200 crore dream project
(DE, Dec 1) of a specilised hospital and
Medical College has added another feather
to its cap. With the grace of the divine
mother and the unflinching devotion of
the devotees the dream project will
surely come up. The cancer hospital which
is the first phase of the dream project
will prove highly beneficial to the
people of the State.
Though in our State there
are departments of onocology (Cancer) in
every big hospital but there is no
hospital entirely dedicated to the
treatment and study of cancer. With the
result the patients have to go to Delhi
for the specialised treatment for the
various types of cancer. The architect of
the hospital will be such that from every
bed the track to the Holy Shrine will be
seen. This will prove beneficial to the
mental peace of the patients who will
watch the Divine Mother everytime they
wish. This will add a new weapon of faith
in them to fight the dreaded disease.
Again SMVDSB deserves all praise for this
dream project.

Narcotic
cultivation
Sir,
The news published in this
daily about the cultivation of narcotics
on eleven thousand kanals of land (Nov
29) is really shocking. It was earlier
known perhaps in early eighties that in
some pockets of South Kashmir narcotics
especially charas was grown.
But it is really shocking
that now the cultivation of narcotics
like Bhang, Polly, Harshisn etc is
reaching a level that is threatening the
future of agriculture in the Valley. It
is not only that the problem will remain
confined to the Valley it will spread to
other parts of the State if this
nefarious activity is not checked at
first hand. It is reported that people
are devoting more time and energy to the
cultivation of narcotics while as they
should have focussed on the agriculture
and taken steps to improve it. It is
clear that narco cultivation is proving
more lucrative than the traditional
crops. What is even more disturbing is
that the money generated has been pumped
to fuel militancy.
Thus we see a pattern that
is prevalent in the areas of Waziristan
and Afganistan. The nexus between
narcotics and militancy has to be broken.
The State Government should take all
steps to destroy narcotic cultivation in
these areas. A sustained drive is needed
in this direction.

Leh
telescope
Sir,
The news report titled,
''IIA to build two meter.. (DE Nov. 29)''
is a highly encouraging. The erection of
a telescope of such a type is considered
first of its kind in Asia. Leh is ideally
suited for the observation of the sky
because of its altitude and the low
amount of pollution and radiowave
disturbance. There are few places in the
world which are suited for observing
stars and other heavenly bodies. To have
one such place in Leh in our State is a
boon for us. It is hoped that the
proposed to meter solar telescope comes
up quickly and funds for it are allotted
by the Central Government.
The study of solar
phenomenon especially after the recent
Japanese research about solar flares and
sun spots has assumed greater
significance. The erection of the
telescope will bring our State in the
forefront of the astrophysical research.
It will start a new age of scientific
temper and research in our State. When
the project is completed the scientists
of the State will also get an opportunity
to study the secrets of the sky.
