address Numberdars,
Chowkidars on Dec 6:
Charak
Excelsior
Correspondent
JAMMU,
Dec 3: Chief
Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad
will address the
Chowkidars and Numberdars
during the one day
convention being
organised by Dogra Saddar
Sabha here on December 6.
Talking to
media-persons here today,
president of the Sabha
and Minister for R&B,
Gulchain Singh Charak
said that Dogra Sadar
Sabha was fighting for
the justice to the
Numberdars and Chowkidars
who are facing massive
discrimination. Their
long pending demand of
hike in remuneration is
highly justified. He
pointed out that Rs 81
per month to the
Numberdars and Rs 250 to
the Chowkidars was a
cruel joke with them
during these hard times.
Mr Charak
said that due to
militancy, they were
facing great difficulty
and continued to work
with the security forces,
Revenue, Health and
Police agencies. These
are the people who have
the actual knowledge
about land records,
individuals residing in
their respective areas
besides movement of
outsiders or strangers.
They are very responsible
people of our democratic
system. But in return
they are getting nothing.
Their support to the
Government in view of
recent decision on
Land
acquisition was vital. He
pointed out that on the
pattern of Harayana and
Punjab, their
remuneration is required
to be reviewed and
enhanced accordingly.
They should also be
issued uniforms and
I-cards has they are also
facing hurdles during
movement in the militancy
infested areas. He
further stated that in
militancy nearly 127
Chowkidars/Numberdars
have been killed.
Majority of them were
killed by the militants
on the charges of
informers. They also need
some protection from the
security agencies.
Responding
to a question, Mr Charak
said there were nearly
7380 Numberdars and 2705
Chowkidars in the state.
The Farooq Government had
constituted a committee
led by Shushma Chowdhary
( the then Revenue
Secretary) to review the
increase in their
remuneration but later
Government rejected the
proposal claiming that
funds were not available.
He claimed that in Dec 6
convention, Chowkidars/
Numberdars.
will be
provided the platform by
the DSS to project their
demands and Chief
Minister will be
requested to make some
historic announcement for
providing them financial
relief.
