Twenty20 gives new impetus to cricket
hopes for CWG 2010

NEW DELHI, Aug 25: BCCI’s acceptance of the Twenty20 version of cricket has revived the hopes of the sport being included in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the organisers are ready to wait a little longer for a positive response from the Indian Board.

"There is still a chance that cricket may be included in the games. But for that the BCCI needs to act as the ball is in their court," Chairman of the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Suresh Kalmadi said here today.

"We wanted to have Twenty20 cricket matches as part of the Commonwealth Games as it would be very difficult to have full 50 overs matches in a multi-disciplinary event. But initially, BCCI was not keen on this format of the game.

"But the Board has now given the green signal to this form of the game with a domestic competition taking off next year.

"India will also take part in the ICC Twenty20 world championship in South Africa next year. So, these events have given a new impetus to this issue," he said.

Kalmadi said, though it would be preferable that the BCCI takes a decision before the CGF’s executive board meeting, a positive response at a later date could also be taken up to include the sport.

"We would like them to take a decision quickly but we can still work something out if they respond after November," he said.

He claimed the International Cricket Council (ICC) was keen for the game to be a part of the sporting extravaganza but the BCCI was dragging its feet on the issue.

Kalmadi, also the president of Indian Olympic Association, was speaking after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for setting up ‘Business Club India’ which aims to showcase the country as a commercial partner and investment destination using the opportunity afforded by the Commonwealth Games.

Kalmadi said the organising committee had got an approval for 20 disciplines from the Commonwealth Games Federation, out of which 15 had been cleared.

"We have decided on three more which have to be cleared at the executive board meeting of the CGF in Kuala Lumpur in November. Tennis and archery are almost finalised while billiards and snooker still need to be cleared."

The organising committee could still recommend two more sports and cricket could be one of them, said the Lok Sabha member from Pune.

The organising committee chairman, however, made it clear that he was not willing to wait indefinitely.

"I am not too eager to have cricket at the 2010 Commonwealth Games if the response is not reasonably quick and positive," he said. (PTI)
