"Class-XII
curriculum"
Sir
This refers to the inclusion
of the controversial incidents like
Kashmir issue, Ayodhya incident,
Emergency, Gujarat riots, challenges of
communalism, rise of OBC in North India,
Anti Sikh riots of 1984 and so on in the
class XII curriculum for Political
Science, which NCERT has decided to
include in its text-books from April
2007.
It is true that a clear and
unbiased picture of such political events
should be included in the lessons so that
the political science students are kept
well informed about the cause of such
controversial issues and their
socio-political influences. Apart from
that these political science students
need to be given correct information so
that they can develop a critical view and
counter view about such issues. Besides
such lessons become beacon lights for the
students community as by such exposures
they build their capacity to prepare
themselves and behave as responsible
citizens in case such unfortunate
incidents are repeated. And so become the
"Lesson for the Ages".
This sounds plausible so far
as the educational part is concerned. But
there in the other side of the coin too.
It is easy to expose these sensitive
issues before such naive learners of the
subject. The more important is how the
teacher teaches and interprets such gory
incidents of the past in a class room
situation. As quite often such sensitive
incidents have been misinterpreted and
related in a distorted and prejudiced
manner which creates more harm than good
for the students and the society at
large.
So the big question remains
haunting as to how a proper study and the
interpretation of the learner and the
learned can really fulfill the demand of
the hour and contribute towards world
peace still remains to be seen.

Night
driving
Sir,
I fully agree with the views
reflected in a letter in which concern
was expressed about night driving habits
of drivers. I will not talk of other
cities of which I have no direct
experience without doubt the drivers of
our city do indulge in what may be called
irresponsible driving habit. Everybody
whether he drives a bus, a truck, a
matador, scooter, a car or even a bicycle
must have experienced the hazard of high
beams which virtually blind a person
coming from the opposite side. Many
accidents have been caused due to this
habit of the vehicle drivers. Government,
especially must launch an awareness
campaign in which the hazards of high
beam driving must be highlighted. The
other possible remedy is to put a
sufficiently wide black ribbon on the
head lights which should be made
mandatory by the traffic department.
Those erring should be penalised onspot.

Prime
Minister's statement and nuke issue
Sir,
Some days ago the Prime
Minister gave a detailed statement in
Parliament which should have put all
doubts about the modalities of Indo-US
nuke deal at rest. So far so good. The
nation need not doubt the intentions of
the Government. Every Government in India
is sensitive to such issues and no
Government can remain lax in its duties
towards defending the vital interests of
the country. As long as doubts are
concerned about the deal they have
emanated from the double speak of the US
Government. When the house of
representatives ratified the deal a month
back they introduced a clause which was
not a part of the broad parameters of the
deal when its modalities were settled.
The clause is that in case America does
not supply uranium to India due to some
security reasons, it will pressurise
other Western countries not to supply the
uranium fuel to India. Hence American
intentions are not clear. Even they have
not issued any statement that would
strengthen the Prime Minister's statement
in the Parliament.

Discovering
Bhadarwah
Sir,
The present Government has
at last discovered mercifully the
potential of Bhadarwah. If the finding is
late but never too late. In a democratic
set up somethings move slow and some move
faster. However it is nice to see that
the Chief Minister is evincing keen
interest in Doda-Bhaderwah and Kishtwar.
It is an irony that some of the most
beautiful parts of the state like Wadwan,
Paddar and Marwah are yet to the linked
by an all weather, all season road. The
yatras of Mani Mahesh, Kailash and
Machail have provided a spring board for
the Government to act soon so that the
immense potential of these areas is
tapped. A full fledged autonomous tourist
development authority which will take
care of the development as well as
promotion of these areas is a prime
necessity. The State Tourism Development
Corporation is too much preoccupied with
the other areas of the State. Hope that
some action is taken in this regard.
Yours
etc...
