Lake on Tawi

Sir,

The constant demand for creating a lake on river Tawi at Jammu is a genuine one and should receive urgent attention of the Government( refer Mr. Jamwal's letter D.E.28th. July 2006) on the following grounds:

A lake in the vicinity of Jammu city with Bahu and Mahamaya forests in the background will enhance its beauty manifold.

Lakes improve the climatic conditions of the surrounding areas. With a lake in the vicinity Jammu city will become cooler in summers.

The water table will rise and improve growth of vegetation in and around Jammu.

Lakes are essential from point of view of recreation. People can use the lake for boating, swimming and regettas and will attract tourists from the neighbouring states.

The lake will become a rich source of fish production and Jammuites can eat fresh fish as compared to stale stuff they are used to eating.

Having said so it is also important to consider the following points:

Are geological conditions suitable to create an artificial lake? This will need expert examination and advice.

During rainy season Tawi is in great fury. Suitable safeguards will have to be created once a decision is taken to create a lake.

With a lake in the vicinity we will feel more proud of our city.

Chain snatching

Sir,

In the city of temples people are peaceful and have never indulged in antinational activities. Unfortunately some misguided rogues are out to damage the peaceful atmosphere of this great city through their nefarious activities. The women have been especially targeted by these rowdy elements. Taking the advantage of a women walking alone in a lane or a bylane these rogues snatch valuables of the hapless women and runaway. Many incidents have been reported and alarmingly they are on the rise. Gold chain snatching incidents have been reported from many places whether it is Bohri, Talab Tillo, Bakshi Nagar or some other place. A strange and of course a unwelcome sign is that even if there are bystanders watching the incident they do not run after the thief but just watch. Police has a primary role but the civil society also has a prime responsibility to fight these rogues and help them put behind the bars which is the only place they deserve.

Summer vacations in Doda

Sir,

It's not only the adult people but children who are also not tolerating the hot temperature of Doda which has crossed 400C. The Govt. has ordered the summer vacations in Kashmir valley recently and the schools of Jammu were closed one month before. The Govt has not yet given its order whether there will be summer vacations in Doda or not. Has the Govt forgotten that the temp of Doda is more than the temp in Kashmir valley.
