Vultures face extinction

Sir,

The population of vultures, the scavengers of nature is sharply declining in Asian countries including India, The birds are out of sight for the last decade in Jammu area. Even common men in rural areas as badly missing these creatures. The causes and reasons for their disappearance need scientific investigation. Meanwhile, however, all wild life authorities, eco-friends' lovers of nature, birds and animals, and ornithologists must do something possible to save this useful bird from being extinct. Survey on the movement tracks of Vultures, their natural habitats and ecology are areas where we can contribute and co-operate to some extent. A project on ''Vulture census'' is reported to have been taken up at Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History Coimbatore. We can make contact with such institute for feedback exchange.

The procurement of a few pairs of Vultures from surviving areas, their maintenance and brooding under protected conditions in suitable locations should be attempted for further study and spread. Keeping of some Vulture pairs in zoos, at present can be source of attraction for visitors to see disappearing creatures of nature.

Ban on child labour

Sir,

Apropos the article 'ILO urges ban on Child Labour' published in the Daily Excelsior dated Aug 30, though the author has touched the children working in mine and coal field, it is essential that every child working in any field be taken into consideration.

Child labour in India is a stigma which needs to be obliterated at once. Though the attention of the Government has been drawn towards the evil most of the times, much success has not been achieved so far. Thousands of children continue to work in hazardous conditions. They neither enjoy childhood, nor schooling. Every year Governments allocate huge sums of money for their education but do not get benefitted. By working in hazardous conditions, they fell prey to various diseases. Even some of them turn into hardcore criminals and then land into jails. As a result their life usually remains disturbed.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon the Government and the NGOs to make endeavours to put an end to child labour.

Srilanka in crisis

Sir,

This has reference to the article 'Sri Lanka in crisis again' published in the Daily Excelsior.

After the assassination of Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Kadirgamar peace seems to be fragile in the Island nation. Now, India should not remain a mute spectator to the happenings in Sri Lanka. Peace in Island nation is in India's interest. Therefore India should play an active role by brining the warring factions closer to each other and resolving the ethnic issue once for all.

India, the emerging super power have to extend its area of influence to another countries by helping them financially and politically.

Indian hockey in crisis

Sir,

The condition of the present India Hockey Team is on the extreme ebb following their dismal performance in the recently concluded Rabo Bank Trophy in which India managed to finish lowly seventh out of eight teams. That too after a surprise 2-1 victory over England in the 7th -8th place play off match. But this has not been any thing new for the Hockey fans as the poor show by the team has been continuing for some years. Gone are the days when the Indian tricolour was considered as a symbol of doom for the opposition in Hockey. Now it presents itself as a complete walkover.

Not even the Premier Hockey League (PHL) which was started last year with great anticipation has done any good. Even the disciplinary records of the Indian Hockey players have not been so great; a couple of them were involved in a brawl and penalized with match bans. The coaches are made the scapegoats and are regularly being changed by the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF).

And with many other tournaments just around the corner, the India chances of a victory are already looking very bleak.
