Aid
to earthquake victims
I
Sir,
The
economic package announced by the Centre
and funds raised by different
Governmental agencies and NGOs to help
the earthquake victims is a welcome step,
but the question now arises on the
sincerity of the State Government on the
implementation part because the same can
become the pocket money of different
Government officials and ministers. The
precendent of the failure of
'snow-tsunami' Rehabilitation Plan should
not be reiterated where all the promises
were forgotten just within in a week or
two after the tragedy.

II
Sir,
The
earthquake that hit Pakistan and North
West India affected life and property in
Pakistan and India at a large scale. The
forts, brigade quarters and buildings
collapsed and lands cracked. Hundreds of
people in India and Pakistan were
rendered shelterless including PoK,
Muzaffarabad. About 37 army men and four
BSF jawans were buried alive in Uri
Sector when their bunkers and barracks
collapsed. The most affected districts in
Kashmir valley and Baramulla, Kupwara and
Srinagar. It affected the Poonch and
Rajouri at large scale and Jammu at small
scale. It has been assessed that about
8,000 people have been killed and
nearabout one lakh have been injured in
Pakistan and many persons are missing.
Residents in Islamabad ran out of houses
and may houses collapsed in Northern
Pakistan district of Kahistan and
Batgram. More than 1500 people died and
many have been injured in Kashmir, about
2000 people are missing in Kashmir. About
seventeen people have been killed in
Jammu. Many houses and buildings
including historic forts of Poonch and
Reasi, Brigade Head Quarters and Gita
Bhawan in Poonch, Mubarak Mandi Complex,
Jammu University have been partially
damaged (Damaged in Part). Many people
have been rendered shelterless in Poonch
district. Many female students got shock
and minor injuries. The quantum of
damaged in unassisted.
Now the
question arises to the responsibility of
the human society at this critical stage
and juncture. It is beyond the control of
human being to control the ''Coming'' of
these happenings and calamities. But with
the help of computers and latest gadgets
one can come to know the happenings and
coming of these calamities such as
earthquake and storm etc. It is necessary
that some means, strategies, measures and
plannings are made for safety and
''Knowing'' of these calamities. Here are
some steps that need to be taken:
* More and
more computers, machines should installed
at different places of the world and
affected areas of this earthquake. Media
should play a constructive role in this
critical situation and should not create
any discrimination between the people of
Pakistan and India and among the people
of different faiths.
* The
Government should provide help and
assistance in a proper way so that it
could be reach the affected persons
properly.
* The
Government should assess the damage and
visit the affected areas properly.
* The
common citizens should make contributions
and collect the funds for the economic
assistance of the bereaved families of
victims and for those who are missing and
those who are in trouble. Some welfare
programmes should be held for the welfare
of the bereaved families of victims etc.
