Democracy in Peril

I

Sir,

We have a Parliamentary democracy in India our undemocratic leaders in India have perverted it for their selfish ends. Selfishness has made them unconstitutional. It effects right thinking and ethics. Power hunger is blinded by avariciousness. It makes us opportunistic, unfair and unjust. When right thinking is ''Polluted'' right action ceases. Our urge for seizure of political power accounts for 'murder of democracy'' in Goa and close on its heels in Jharkhand State by induction of minority Govt of the Congress headed by Mr. Shibu Soren soon after the Assembly Elections by the pro Congress Governor of the State.

The corrupt and the criminals sink themselves and the country low! How to check the downward drift and make our democracy constitutional depends on our intellectuals, leaders, teachers and the enlightened press to be fair, just and honest in their professions and also private and house hold life! They should be loyal to the country rising above their party. Province, community etc because of our country is sound all else will be upto the mark and sound! All reform emanates from within and surfaces out. Great leaders galvanise the nation and ignite even 'the dead wood'' to warmth energy and light.

Here are some suggestions to improve and democratic polity:- Governors must be non political party eminent breach of election norm should entail disqualification of the candidate. Defections from one political party to another should be barred. All Independent Legislators must be disqualified for acting as ''Trading horses ''. They should stay as independents and be judges of Govt in action and vote constitutionally on merits. All donations from Pvt Industrialists and big business to political parties and politicians must be deposited into Govts ''calamity and Relief Fund'' against proper Bank/Treasury Receipt and not made to the parties or the personalities for quid pro quo. No corrupt and criminal even under probe must be allowed to contest any election. All formations must have elected members and majority management rule. Govt servants are booked for corruption on owning property disproportionate to their known sources of income. This legality must equally apply to our regislators, rulers and candidates as public servants''. They must disclose their Assetts to the Election Commission and also publish them in press. The independence of the Election Commission, Judiciary & the Auditor General of India etc must not be interferred with or diluted by the Executive. The previleged rulers must sincerely, faithfully and honestly swear to uphold the constitution and function as true custodians of Public Assets and as their honest trustees using them as they expend their own earned money!

Sir,

History watchers feel a sense of remorse over the current happenings in country's political area. In its effort to wrest power in Goa, Jharkhand and Bihar the performance of the Congress party smacks of frustration, arrogance and tyranny. It appears to have failed to realise that the struggle is in no sense one of natives against the foreigners as in the past in which it played a vital role. The tincture of nationalism is being thrust to the background. The politics has now become a rivalry of different groups struggling for power and money is every state, between those autocracies already established during the last 50 years versus those struggling to take their seats. In this struggle groups/communities are being incited, one against the other to hold the sway in the democratic set upto which is not as illiterate now as it was till nineties.

It seems the Congress Party has forgotten the drubbing it received earlier for its policy of containing its hold on the vote bank by hook or crook through appeasement of sections at the cost of majority opinion which resulted in large sections getting weaned away from it as in the past. The party need to realize that with the spread of education and the help of media the masses are, progressively, forming their own views and are no longer so naive as to get led any with whatever the politicians thrust on them by means fair and foul.

In this struggle the only hope for the country lies on the young blood which is more concerned with integrity and welfare of the nation.

Indian bounties for Pakistan

Sir,

Mr. Allabaksh's article ''Indian bounties for Pakistan'', published in your issue of Monday March 7, 2005, is very informative and revealing. Those in the Government whether in the state or in the Centre will do well to read this and digest the information contained in it. Much of the euphoria over opening of the border roads, playing Cricket matches, cultural exchanges etc with our neighbour will vanish in this air.

As for as Jammu province is concerned before we think of the above, what about the thousands of refugees who were forced to flee their hearts and homes in Pakistan and PoK and take refugee in Jammu. These unfortunate people have yet to be accepted as state subjects even after 58 years by the successive Governments in the State and the Centre and they continue to be denied the benefits enjoyed by the rest in the State.

In an article appearing in the Sunday times of March 6, 2005, the BCCI is very keen to invite President Musharraf to watch one of the Cricket matches being played in the current Indo-Pak series. Have they forgotten that late President Zia too was invited to witness a match between the two countries in Jaipur sometime in the mid eighties, he did so with a deceptive smile and rest is history!
