BANGALORE, June 20: The Indian cricket board would tomorrow announce the probables for the next month’s conditioning camp for the tri-series in Sri Lanka in July-August.

The players for the fringe fast bowlers camp beginning later this month would also be announced tomorrow.

BCCI secretary S K Nair told PTI over telephone that he would arrive here this evening and hold broad interactions with newly appointed coach Greg Chappell, chairman of national selection committee Kiran More and other selectors, and chalk out the details of the two camps, including its duration.

The tri-series, featuring India, the West Indies and the hosts Sri Lanka, is scheduled to be held from July 26.

Nair has already said Indians playing in the english County circuit and those figuring in the probables list would be allowed to skip the conditioning camp.

That would remove from the scene Sourav Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan and Dinesh Mongia, who are all busy in the english circuit.

Meanwhile, Chappell had already had detailed discussions with the team’s trainer Gregory King and physio John Gloster on the plan of action for the two camps.

Chappell, the 56-year-old former Australian captain, had already stressed the need for fitness in the hectic international calendar. (PTI)

BANGALORE, June 20: Ahead of her Wimbledon campaign in London, Sania Mirza slipped three places to be world number 75 in the latest rankings released by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) today.

Sania, who had early round exits in a couple of tournaments in the run up to the Wimbledon, was last week placed at 72.

The Indian teenager would start in the year’s third Grand Slam with a match against Akiko Morigami of Japan, who dropped seven places to be at 71, later in the day.

United States’ Lindsay Davenport retained her top spot followed by Maria Sharapova of Russia and French woman Amelie Mauresmo. (PTI)

Visa denial may invite ban, fears PBF

LAHORE, June 20: Criticising the Foreign Ministry for denying visa to pugilists from India and Chinese Taipei, the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) described it as "disgraceful thing for the country" and feared the incident would invite a ban from the AIBA.

PBF chairman Prof Anwar Chowdhry, who is also the AIBA president, lamented that despite pursuing the issue for the last three months, the Foreign Ministry did not pay any heed to the request.

"It’s a disgraceful thing for the country and the officials in the Interior Ministry are unaware of its consequences," he rued.

India had announced an 11-member team for the inaugural PSO Asian junior boxing championship, which gets underway here kpt sports complex today.

"As per the rules of International Boxing Federation (AIBA) we are bound to arrange the visas of the participating teams in an international championship but despite our repeated requests the visas were refused to India and Taipei boxers," Prof Chowdhry was quoted as saying by "The News".

Admitting the incident might prompt AIBA to slap a ban on Pakistan, Prof Chowdhry said, in such a case, he would not be in a position to prevent that.

"If the AIBA ban Pakistan for some years our boxing teams would not be able to participate in the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and other events," he said.

Afghanistan, China, Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand, Turkmenistan, UAE, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and hosts Pakistan will take part in the six-day championship.

The boxers of under-19 age group will compete in 11 weight categories. (UNI)

PHF wants regular player exchange with India

LAHORE, June 20: If the PHF has its way, hockey players from India and Pakistan would soon be seen crossing the border to play in each other’s country.

After a host of Pakistani players including dra-flicker Sohail Abbas and former captain Wasim Ahmed - took part in the India Hockey Federation (IHF) organised inaugural Premier Hockey League (PHL) in Hyderabad, it is the turn of six Indian players to display their skills in the Super League Hockey September 8 to 20 at Karachi’s Hockey Club of Pakistan.

Apart from Sohail and Wasim, other Pakistani players who played in the PHL included Ahmed Alam, Ali Raza, Dilawar Hussain, Mohammed Saqlain, Kashif Jawwad, Mohd Sarwar, Mudassar Ali Khan and Zeeshan Ashraf (Pakistan).

PHF Director (Marketing) Sardar Naveed told "The Nation" that six teams of the country would take part in the inaugural super league with foreign players in their ranks.

"We have requested the Indian Hockey Federation to send six of their players to participate in the league and similar requests have also been forwarded to Malaysian and European teams," he said.

Revealing that PHF was interested in exchanging players with its Indian counterpart on a regular basis, the official said the federation had "invited players from India on reciprocal basis. They will send their players here and for their event Pakistani players will be sent."

Taking a cue from the PHL, the federation has come up with catchy names for the sides in the super league and the six teams are Sindh Qalanders, Baloch Lions, Sher-i-Pinjab, Frontier Falcons, Northern Cavaliers and Capital Dynamos. (UNI)

BSF enters final, to meet J&K Bank tomorrow

SRINAGAR, June 20: Border Security Force (BSF) today stormed into the final of 8th Police Martyr’s memorial football tournament in style trouncing CRPF 5-0 at Bakshi Stadium, here.

Now, BSF will take on the J&K Bank in the final scheduled to be played on June 22 at the same venue.

Amarjeet Singh (29th), Kamal Kishore (39th), Sarabjeet Singh (42nd and 52nd) and Kamal Kishore (81st) were scorers from BSF.

Officiating Secretary of the J&K State Sports Council, Manoj Pant was special guest in today’s second semi-final.

Earlier,in the first semi-final played yesterday, J&K Bank stunned the defending champions SSB XI beating latter 6-5 in sudden death. It was a goalless draw in the stipulated 90 minutes as well as in the 15-minute extra time. The penalty shoots too could not decide the fate of the game, when out of five kicks each team got levelled at 3-3, missing two kicks each.

At the end, it was Vikramjeet Singh, the bank’s goalkeeper who broke the tie by making a brilliant save of the ninth penalty and then scored on the last turn.

Vikramjeet was promised a Rs 5000 award by Mohd. Amin Khan, president, J&K Bank Officers’ Association.

To safeguard the interest of the game, veteran cricketers have formed a body under the name and style of J&K Veteran Cricket Players Association.

Even as the formal announcement is yet to be made, the association has already held its meeting involving over 20 such veteran players who have represented J&K in Ranji Trophy and other first class cricket events.

The aim is to ascertain the reasons plaguing the state cricket, poor performance of the teams in the North Zone competitions and above all the hurdles in establishing an exclusive cricket stadium in Jammu.

Jammu and Kashmir Fencing Association has nominated as many as four political patrons to spearhead the association working in the state. While the patron-in-chief, Member Parliament Madan Lal Sharma, is from Congress, other two patrons are from PDP, Ved Mahajan, MLC and Brij Mohan, MLC from National Conference. The fourth patron is Deputy Commissioner, Excise, Vijay Sharma.

Mr Sharma has retained the post of president while Vijay Sharma was re-elected general secretary of the Association. The entrant was Sajjad Majeed Choudhary, who has been named treasurer of the association.

Arun Kumar Vij was observer from Fencing Federation of India while Sudhir Kumar represented State Sports Council in these election which took place on June 16. B R Chandan was BR Chandan.

MEF XI wins cricket final

JAMMU, June 20: Muslim Educated Federation (MEF) XI defeated Sky XI by 19 runs to win the Jeet memorial cricket tournament which was organised at Sports Stadium, Rajouri.

Batting first after winning the toss, MEF made 120 runs in the allotted 25 overs. Rafiq Lone was top scorer. From Sky XI Sukhdev Sharma clinched five wickets. In reply, Sky XI bowled out for 101 runs in 15 overs. Qamar Khan bagged five wickets for MEF XI and was later declared man of the match.

Shahzad Gani was declared man of the series while Firdose was adjudged best batsman and Sukhdev best bowler.

K K Langar of International Higher Secondary School and Advocate Qamar Chowdhary were chief guests in the final.

Channi Club wins Rehmat-Ullah Bhat memorial cricket tourney

JAMMU, June 20: Channi Himmat Cricket Club defeated Bhatindi Cricket Club to lift the winners trophy in the Kh. Rehmat-Ullah Bhat memorial (day-night) cricket tournament the final of which was played yesterday at Bhatindi near here.

In all, 30 local teams participated in this month-long tournament. The final was witnessed by Minister for Social Welfare, Mula Ram, who was chief guest on the occasion. Minister appreciated the organisers for providing the local youth a chance to exhibit their talent.

Speaking to the local gathering the chief guest assured help in developing sports facilities in Bhatindi.

He was accompanied by Nisar Ahmed Azad, District Youth Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra.

Reasi, Imran Clubs win in Haji Ibrahim cricket

JAMMU, June 20: Reasi Club and Imran Club won their respective matches to advance into the next round of ongoing Haji Ibrahim memorial (day-night) cricket tournament being played at Baba Jamuna Dass Stadium, Paloura, here.

In the first match, Reasi Club defeated TCC by 25 runs. Batting first, Reasi Club made 128 for five in 12 overs, which, in reply, TCC could not chase and bowled out for 103 runs. Sunny was declared man of the match for his score of 57 for winner Reasi Club.

The second match was won by Imran Club, who beat Aryan Club by eight wickets. Aryan Club made 117 runs for seven in 12 overs with Shoaib and Chotu being the maximum scorers with 35 and 22 runs respectively. In reply, Imran Club chased the total in 9.4 overs for the loss of two wickets. Raju and Shazad was top scorers with 38 and 30 runs respectively. Raju was later adjudged man of the match for scoring 38 runs and taking two wickets.

Next matches (Tuesday): Love Cricket Club to take on Pranav Cricket Club at 7 pm and Shivalik Cricket Club to meet GNCC at 9 pm.

World fame mountaineers asked to explore potential in J&K

JAMMU, June 20: The three-member team from Jammu and Kashmir which attended the Mountaineering and Tourism meet at Mussoorie in Uttranchal invited the international mountaineers to the state for exploring the potential.

These members, on their returned, informed EXCELSIOR that they had round of discussions with world fame mountaineers, who were among the delegates, to come to J&K where situation is fast improving.

The group, comprising veteran mountaineer, Yogeshwar Sharma, Dr Vinay Rampal and Ramesh Sharma also met the Aisha Khan of Pakistan, who is president of Mountain and Glacier Protection Organisation.

The meet coincided with annual meeting of the Himalayan Environment Trust and the 40th Anniversary Celebrations of Indian Everest Expedition 1965.

Prominent among the Indian Everesters were CP Vohra, an Arjuna Awardee from J&K, Sonam Wangyal, another Arjuna Awardee from J&K and Nowang Gombu, the first man to reach Everest twice.

Warne fights to save his marriage

LONDON, June 20 : Aussie cricket star Shane Warne is fighting to save his marriage after new claims that he cheated on his wife, a tabloid reported today.

The 35-year-old spin bowler, who has been involved in a series of scandals, allegedly begged Laura Sayers, 25, for sex before she gave in to his pleas, Mirror claimed.

The claim could be the last straw for Warne’s long-suffering wife Simone, who moved from Melbourne to England with their children just last week to be with her husband, it said.

"Shane is facing a real fight to save his marriage. Simone has had about as much as she can take," the tabloid said quoting an insider.

Another tabloid, the Sunday Mirror, also reported Warne’s one-night stand with Laura, who last night said she hoped Warne’s marriage survived.

"At the time I didn’t know he was married. Had I known it never would have happened. I feel sorry for his wife and the effect this had had. Hopefully they will work it all out," she said.

Warne, who is playing for County Club Hampshire in Southampton, refused to comment as he arrived in his black BMW for the match against Glamorgan.

Sania through to second round in Wimbledon

LONDON, June 20 : India’s Sania Mirza made a winning start to her Wimbledon campaign beating Japan’s Akiko Morigami in three sets to move into the second round at the All England Tennis Club here today.

Sania, ranked 75th in the latest ranking list, beat Morigami, ranked four places above her, 6-3 3-6 8-6 in the opening match on court 17 in nearly two hours.

The 18-year-old from Hyderabad, who advanced to the third round of Australian Open this year before losing to eventual winner Serena Williams, will now play sixth seed and US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who hammered local girl Rebecca Llewellyn 6-0 6-1.

After overpowering Akiko to win the first set, Sania was on the defensive in the second set with Morigami breaking the Indian in the eighth game to go 5-3 up. But Sania immediately hit back forcing two break points in the next game but in the end Morigami made it 1-all converting her third set point.

Sania began the third set on the wrong footing as Akiko forced three break points. Though the Indian managed to make it 30-40 the Japanese made full use of her third chance to take an early advantage in the decider. Sania tried her best in the next game forcing a number of break points but Akiko managed to hold serve and go 2-0 up.

However, Sania was in no mood to let thing go awry, as she first held serve and then broke right back to even the set at 2-2 forcing three break points on the Japanese serve.

Sania soon lost her serve again as Akiko made it 4-2 only for the counter punching Indian to claw back to 4-4 forcing another break. The scoreline than read 6-6 when the Indian made things difficult for her opponent as she held her serve before breaking Akiko’s serve to clinch the issue. (PTI)

 

 

Tendulkar opens ‘India room’ at Oval

LONDON, June 20: Sachin Tendulkar today inaugurated the ‘India room’ in the new stand at the Oval Cricket Stadium here.

Tendulkar, who was here to also offer his support to the Twenty20 Tsunami fund raiser between Asia XI and International XI, was thrilled to open the new room at the refurbished stand.

"It is great honour. Surrey is my favourite ground where I played my hundredth Test. It was a special moment for me," Tendulkar said.

Leading UK based industrialists raised 500,000 Pounds (approx Rs four crore) for the ‘India room’. Prominent contributors included Sir Gulam Noon of Noon Products, G P Hinduja of the Hinduja Foundation, Kartar Lalvani, chief of Vita Biotics Ltd, Lord Bagri and Nadeem Ahmed, Chief of Global Tea and Commodities.

Offering the support of cricketers to all fund raising activities to help Tsunami victims, Tendulkar said "from the cricketing fraternity whatever you are doing for Tsunami victims is very very special. All the cricketers are with you. Hopefully I will get to play a part in future fund-raisers."

Tendulkar, who was to feature in both the Lord’s match held on June 14 and today’s match at the Oval, had to pull out of the matches after undergoing an elbow surgery in London.

Talking about the surgery, Tendulkar told PTI: "I am making steady progress. Now I am leaving for Mumbai tomorrow." (PTI)
