Untenable finding

Sir,

According to one study undertaken by the scientists of one of the universities in Finland, the people with obesity if start embarking on dieting shall meet with death at the earliest as compared with those blessed with extra flab and not opting for dieting. This outcome of the study seems to be untenable in the sense that obesity in itself is considered not only a disease but also leads to many other health problems. Those with extra fat have to face many problems while leading a normal life.

All efforts are now--days, therefore, on for having a physique looking slim and trim. Slim, trim and smart looking body is given preference over the unshapely body with protruding belly etc. And to have such a physique people and more particularly young one have made their habits of doing daily exercises, visiting Gyms for the purpose and attending classes of yoga etc. There are number of programmes on the TV for the viewers specifically aimed at keeping the body hale and hearty free from all sort of diseases. And it must be stressed here that the goal of possessing a sound mind in a sound body could only be achieved by incorporating in their meal the stuffs replete with high nutrient value food contents including milk and fruits etc.

It would not be wrong to say that the obesity is consered one of the major problems in foreign countries too and people often read news of protest by people abroad to draw the Govt attention towards this problem.

Even earlier also there was a such study undertaken by the German scientists attributing longer life to a lazy and easy going life which too appeared against the generally held beliefs of living a life full of adventures and doing something substantial during their life time to make it a worth living.

Under the circumstances the above referred study is confusing and untenable.

Setting up of accountability commission

Sir,

Now-a days there is great hype in our administrative and political arena regarding accountability commission which has been recently set up. Its implementation on the one hand is being seen as a positive step towards the speedy completion of public funded and other related works and increased responsibility on the part of officers and ministers, on the other hand it is being observed that our present government is not at heart desirous of effective implementation of this commission.

At the time when the present PDP led Mufti Government resumed the charges, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had assured of setting up of an accountability commission very soon. But it is highly ironical that it took more than two and half years to even think about setting up of such a commission which is a dire requirement today. Recently on 2nd of July 2005 the Governor of J&K recommended Retd. Justice R.P. Sethi as the accountability commissioner as reported by a section of media. It is being heard that Mr. Gowhar Ahmad has been appointed as secretary to the commission.

But it is again discouraging that no office has been set up for the smooth functioning of this commission. It raises question mark at the way in which entire step has been taken up. When we are at number 2 rank in terms of the most corrupt states of India then a great responsibility lies on the shoulders of this commission to put the administrative and political system on proper rails and bring back the lost reputation of the state.

This is indeed a welcome step but how firm hands and sharp teeth it is provided is the basic thing that would determine the success of this commission in the state? It should be provided free hand in each and every affair of the State . Its branches should be set up at tehsil level and even below to listen to the sufferings of the masses who are the great sufferers of the red tapism. It must be properly strengthened at grass roots, otherwise it would turn into a white elephant.

Save Tawi

Sir,

The decision of the Jammu Development Council to launch an awareness campaign to save the river Tawi from pollution should be welcomed by the citizens of the city. Tawi is not mere a river, but something more to the people of Jammu. Ravi Tawi has a historical importance. People of Jammu are attached to the river culturally. Various religious ceremonies are held along its banks during the river. If we can preserve the Tawi, we can preserve the cultural aspect of people. It has been rightly described as the 'Lifeline' of Jammu, as it caters to the water needs of people.

Therefore, it becomes necessary that it is kept pollution free and saved from encroachments. The Government should frame a comprehensive plan to save it on the pattern of Dal Lake. A massive afforestation drive should be launched along its banks. The green belt will not only check soil erosion but will also become a recreational park. During Summers, people can cool themselves under the forest foilage.

Moreover, it should not be allowed to become a dumping ground for the city waste.

This will go a long way in improving the environment and climatic scenario of the city.
