BARAMULLA,
Jan 29:
With the authorities pushing phase-I of the
municipal elections to a phenomenal success,
Baramulla and Kupwara districts of north Kashmir
today registered heavy turnout of 45 pc and 87 pc
respectively while electing the peoples
representatives for 2 Municipal Councils and 7
Municipal Committees. While the elections have
come as a historic jolt for the separatist
Hurriyat Conference and the militantswho
have been primarily banking on the Valley
urban and semi-urban populationthey have
uprooted the mainstream National Conference (NC)
in its strongest bastion in Jammu and Kashmir. On
the other hand, Kukka Parrays Awami League,
junior Minister Usman Majeed and Forest Minister
Ghulam Mohiuddin Sofi have swept the polls and
emerged stronger in Hajan, Bandipore and Handwara

Chaitanya Swami attains 'Nirvana'

Jan 29: Swami
Visudha Chaitanya Brahmcharya attained
"Nirvana" during the intervening night of
January 28 and 29, at New Delhi. Swamiji had left for New
Delhi in connection with some religious function of one
of his devotees. After experiencing some uneasiness,
while being shifted to Apollo Hospital, Swamiji suffered
a massive cardiac arrest and left this world for heavenly
