BARAMULLA, Jan 29: With the authorities pushing phase-I of the municipal elections to a phenomenal success, Baramulla and Kupwara districts of north Kashmir today registered heavy turnout of 45 pc and 87 pc respectively while electing the peoples’ representatives for 2 Municipal Councils and 7 Municipal Committees. While the elections have come as a historic jolt for the separatist Hurriyat Conference and the militants—who have been primarily banking on the Valley’ urban and semi-urban population—they have uprooted the mainstream National Conference (NC) in its strongest bastion in Jammu and Kashmir. On the other hand, Kukka Parray’s Awami League, junior Minister Usman Majeed and Forest Minister Ghulam Mohiuddin Sofi have swept the polls and emerged stronger in Hajan, Bandipore and Handwara towns respectively......more

Swamiji had left for New Delhi in connection with some religious function of one of his devotees.
