Endangered wildlife

Sir,

The diverse ecology, topography, climatic conditions and unique geographical position has led to great diversity in wildlife of Jammu & Kashmir State. The Kashmir Himalayas are meeting point of Paleartic & oriental fauna.

Nearly 65 species of mammals, 70 species of reptiles, 300 species of birds, 12 species of amphibians and nearly 145 species of fishes represent the State of Jammu & Kashmir. There are certain species of wildlife which are unique to this region i.e Kashmir stag the wild yak, the Tibetan Ass, Mormots, Chiru, etc are among mammals. Among birds are Monal pheasent, Kalij pheasent, Western Tragopan, Red Jungle fowl, chir pheasent etc. Our state mammal is Kashmir stag state bird is black nacked came and state free is Chinar.

But the wildlife of the Kashmir Himalayas is endangered. During the last few decades the situation has at altogether changed and considerable depletion of its natural resources has taken place. Of all the factors responsible for this, human activities have brought about the most tremendous changes. Deforestation followed by loss of habital and hunting and trapping by man are the main factors leading to wildlife depletion. As a result some important wildlife species are on the verge of extinction. The regions which are still under forest cover, however still have wildlife populations, although considerably reduced from what could be seen 30-40 years ago.

Soon after the independence of India, the importance of wildlife was realised and steps for effective protection and preservation of wildlife species were taken by the enactment of Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972. But the State of Jammu & Kashmir have its own law & rules regarding the protection of the wildlife and in this regard in 1978, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir State established and re-organised the Directorate of Wildlife Protection. Now the present need is to implement these laws so that our ecological balance does not get disturbed.
