SRINAGAR, Feb 9: In a major setback to the state government’s process of civic elections in Jammu and Kashmir, suspected militants tonight gunned down National Conference’s elected member and would-be Mayor in Srinagar, Mohammad Maqbool Shah Khaksaar, in Jawahar Nagar. His assassination came a day after the killing of PDP’s elected member and would-be chairman of Beerwah Municipal Committee, Ghulam Mohiuddin Mir, and on the eve of the last phase of civic elections in Kashmir......more

BUDGAM, Feb 9: With all players of the game---Government, separatist leaders and militants---claiming success in holding or disrupting the current process of Municipal elections in Kashmir, residents of a ward at this district headquarters have approached a court of law in their desperate attempts to seek right of vote. Even as the court dismissed the petition today, polling is being conducted in 22 of the total of 50 wards in Budgam district tomorrow. The fourth and the last phase of the Municipal elections in Kashmir is being held in Ganderbal, in addition to four local bodies of Budgam, Magam, Khansahib and Chrar-e-Sharif on Thursday......more
