Governor for collective efforts to restore peace, ensure development

JAMMU, Feb 1: Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today lauded the Civil-Army liaison especially in the border areas and called for synergy at various levels for bringing about early peace and stepping up development In Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking at the 65th Raising Day Function of 6th Jat Regiment this morning, the Governor said: ‘We have to work in tandem to steer out the State from difficulties and usher in an era of prosperity and overall development’.

Gen Sinha complimented the valour of 6th Jat and said they have always scripted a saga of heroism, He made a specific mention of the Jat Regiment in anti-insurgency operations in Assam during his gubernatorial assignment in that State.

He had all praise for straight forwardness of Jat jawans and officers and said that they have always remained in the forefront for defence of the Nation.

‘I have always been feeling like an elderly member of the Jat Regiment family and when among jawans I feel as fit as a young man’, he remarked and recalled his association with the Regiment during various stints as Div Commander, Corps Commander and Army Commander.

Brig Sham Lal and Commanding Officer, Col. Amit Vir Pandia also spoke on the occasion and dwelt on the challenges faced by the regiment on various occasions at the call of the nation with bravery and fortitude.

The Brigadier mentioned about the Regiment’s positioning at Siachen glacier and said that they braved the situation devotedly. Senior officers of the Regiment were also present on the occasion.

On the occasion, former Commanding Officers of the Regiment were also present at the Special Sainik Samelen. The Governor had an interaction with them and shared reminiscences of the old army days in various formations.

Earlier, the Governor gave away Champions Trophy to the Support Company of the Regiment as per the cherished tradition of the unit.

Army honours meritorious students

JAMMU, Feb 1: In order to honour the meritorious students of the area who had performed exceptionally well in their 10th and 12th Board examinations , a function was organised by the Pallanwala Brigade today.

Krishna Yadav, president Army Wives Welfare Association, Pallanwala Brigade gave away the prizes to the serving students of the schools falling in the area.

The students who received the prizes include Preeti Bhandari from Government Higher Secondary School, Akhnoor, who obtained 76 per cent marks in Class XII examinations, Miss Rubi Rani, Miss Meera Bangotra, Miss Priyanka Rajput, Miss Kanchan Sharma and Miss Sadhana Rani all from Nirmala Convent High School, Dhanger who had secured over 80 percent marks in Class Xth examinations.

Himanshu Khajuria from Tiny Aspirants Public School, Jourian was awarded for securing 87 per cent marks in the Class Xth examination. A large number of school children, ex-servicemen and people of the surrounding villages participated in the function.

On the occasion a colourful programme was also presented by the Nirmala Convent High School, Dhanger, Jagriti Shiksha Kendra Pallanwala and Government Middle School Kot Maira.

The theme of the programme which comprises of Hindi and Dogri songs and dances was nationalism. The awards were presented to the children by Mrs Yadav.

324 nominations filed in Udhampur district

UDHAMPUR, Feb 1: As many as 120 nomination papers were filed today by the candidates of different political parties as also independents in Udhampur district for civic polls scheduled to be held on February 12.

Today was the last date of nomination papers, with this the total number of nominations has gone to 324, which include 228 male and 96 female candidates.

The scrutiny of the papers will be done tomorrow and the withdrawal of the candidature has been fixed on February 4.

There are 108 candidates in the fray for Udhampur council, which include 78 male and 30 females.

In Reasi municipal committee, 65 candidates are in fray which include 43 male and 22 females while at Katra Municipal Committee 59 candidates have filed nomination papers, which include 44 male and 15 females.

Similarly at Ramnagar Municipal committee, 53 candidates are in fray of which 34 male and 19 female while at Chenani Municipal committee 39 candidates filed papers of which 29 male and 10 female candidates.

The highest number of female candidates in Municipal Council Udhampur is 30 while the lowest number of 10 women candidates is at Chenani.

Zonal Officer Relief Organisation suspended

By-election to 2 Council seats on Feb 24

NEW DELHI, Feb 1 : The Election Commission will hold bye-election on February 24 to fill a vacancy in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council caused due to the death of Abdul Qayoom, leader of opposition in the Upper House.

Qayoom, the National Conference Member and former Minister, passed away on January 1.

The Commission had earlier announced bypoll on February 24 for a seat in the Council vacated by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed after his election to the Assembly.

As per the schedule, the notification will be issued on February 7. Last date for filing of nomination will be on February 14 and the scrutiny, the following day. Last date for withdrawal of nominations is on February 17.

Campaign in Kathua starts generating heat

KATHUA, Feb 1: The campaign by the contesting candidates for Municipal Council Kathua has started generating heat as many party leaders and the candidates have come out on the roads and streets to seek public support.

The election for 17 wards of Kathua Municipal Council is scheduled to be held on Feb 7. The banners and flags have started appearing at the prime locations and house tops in the town while exercise of pasting posters of various party candidates and independents has been commenced.

Congress candidate Naresh Sharma contesting from Ward 6, Kamal Sharma from Ward 10, Radha Sharma from Ward 16, Suman Sharma from Ward 5 have started their door to door campaign. Anita Shara, who is daughter-in-law of vatern Congress leader late Pt Shiv Ram who is contesting from Ward 9 as Independent candidate also launch campaign in her ward. She has assured better civic facilities in her ward.

BSP candidate from Ward 10 Sunil Gupta, BJP candidate Parveen Ladi from Ward 3, Independent candidates Rajinder Singh Babbi, Som Raj and Naveen Choudhary from Ward 2 also started election campaign after inauguration of their election offices today. MoS Babu Singh and PCC secretary Manohar Singh are the main Congress campaigners in Kathua for party candidates.

Prof Sain Dass, Narinder Jasrotia, Sohan Lal Sharma, Ravinder Singh Pathania and NC candidate from Ward 8, Pardeep Kesar also geared up their campaign activities for Kathua Municipal Council polls.

JAMMU, Feb 1: A ninth class student was run over by a train while as four members of a family received severe burn injuries as LPG cylinder exploded at their residence. This apart, nine persons received injuries in separate road accidents.

Police spokesman said that a student of 9th class—Vinod Kumar, son of Govind Ram of Bhalla Enclave Shiv Mandir-Sector I, Channi Himmat was run over by Jammu Mail train at 95 kilometre.

Proceedings under Section 174 CrPC have been initiated by the police.

Meanwhile, four members of a family received severe burn injuries due to bursting of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder at Ramnagar in Udhampur district.

All were immediately rushed to hospital and their condition was stated to be critical when reports last came in. It could not be ascertained as to how the cylinder exploded.

The injured have been identified as Mulkh Raj, son of Pannu Ram, his wife Rano Devi and two children—Bansi Lal and Ajeet Kumar.

Three persons allegedly consumed poisonous substances at their respective residences. Identified as Santosh Kumari, daughter of Manohar Lal of Bari Brahamana, Fakira, son of Padda Ram of Akalpur and Bola Ram, son of Sat Pal of Sandi, they were rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital when spotted unconscious by family members.

Doctors immediately provided them stomach wash treatment followed by other medicare. Their condition was stated to be critical when reports last came in. It could not be ascertained as to whether they intentionally consumed poison or swallowed the same mistakenly.

Meanwhile, nine persons were injured in separate road accidents. All have been hospitalised and their condition was stated to be out of danger when reports last came in.

The injured are—Gulzar Ahmed, son of Sultan Bhat of Dooru, Vikas Sharma, son of Joginder Paul of Raj Bagh, Bhopinder Singh, Ruhi Akhtar, daughter of Abdul Matlook of Panama Chowk, Narinder Singh, son of Karan Singh of Shastri Nagar, Lal Singh, son of Dina Nath of Phool Pandhah, Zahoor Hussain, son of Hyder Hussain of Ram Nagar, Krishen Chand, son of Thoru Ram of Karghal, Vaishno Devi, wife of Nanak Chand of New Plot.

PCC clears list of candidates for all wards of Poonch

POONCH, Feb 1: J&K Pradesh Congress Committee has cleared the list of Congress candidates for all 17 wards of Municipal Council Poonch.

Preservation of Mubarik Mandi Complex HC treats petition as PIL

JAMMU, Feb 1: A writ petition, filed by Dogri Sanstha and Preserve Art Treasures and Heritage ( PATH), for the preservation of Mubarik Mandi Complex, has been treated as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by the State High Court.

In the writ petition filed through Prof Lalit Magotra and Mr Lalit Gupta, it has been submitted that during the rule of Dogra dynasty, many buildings were constructed at various places in Jammu and Kashmir. In the heart of Jammu city, Mubarik Mandi complex was also constructed which is the symbol of glorious past of Dogras. It was mentioned that the complex’s foundation was laid in 14th century and in 18th and 19th centuries, some existing structures were added to the complex.

After Independence and abolition of monarchy, this complex was used by the State Government for housing its various offices including High Court, Subordinate courts and Divisional Commissioner’s Office. However, the complex suffered great damage over the years because of neglect, it was mentioned in the petition.

Also, there have been about 35 major and minor fire incidents in this complex over the years, as a result lot of damage was caused to the structure.

Praying for immediate steps to preserve the existing structure, the petitioners pleaded that the same be handed over to Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI).

The Court, after considering the importance of the petition treated it as PIL.

52963 electorates to vote in Kathua civic polls

KATHUA, Feb 1: A total of 52963 electorates will cast their vote in the ongoing Municipal elections to be held on February 7. Of which, 27509 are male and 25454 female voters.

There are 341 candidates in the fray for 70 wards of one council and five committees in the district.

In Municipal Council Kathua, 34107 voters, comprising 17629 male and 16478 female from 17 wards will decide the fate of 122 candidates in the fray.

For Municipal Committee Parole, there are 13 wards and 5039 voters comprising 2667 male and 2372 female. The committee has 62 candidates in fray. One candidate namely Devi Rani (INC) from ward No 10, Municipal Committee Parole, has been elected unopposed.

Likewise, in Hiranagar, for 13 wards there are 5106 voters comprising 2683 male and 2423 female, 53 candidates are in fray.

In Basohli, there are 4318 voters comprising 2219 male and 2099 female electorates in 13 wards 50 candidates are in fray.

Similarly, in Billawar with seven wards there, are 3230 voters comprising 1704 male and 1526 female, 32 candidates are in fray.

For Lakhanpur, there are 1163 voters comprising 607 male and 556 female, 22 candidates are in fray for 7 wards.

A total of 98 polling stations have been set up for the smooth conduct of the polls.

Out of total 341 candidates, 59 belong to (BJP), 12 (BSP), 68 (INC), 42 (NC), 11 to (JKNPP), 26 to (PDP) and 123 are independent.

CPI(M) hails positive response of public to civic elections

JAMMU, Feb 1: State secretary of CPI (M) M Y Tarigami has said that the positive response of the people to the ongoing civic election was a welcome sign which indicated common man’s concern for development of Jammu and Kashmir which had remained unattended so far.

In a statement Mr Tarigami said, "it is expected that the democratic exercise will lead to the solution of day to day problems of our suffering people". The CPI (M) appealed to all political parties, especially the ruling coalition to confine these polls to the purpose for which they were meant viz development of the State and not read anything more in this process.

It may be recalled that CPI (M) had pleaded for contesting these polls on non-party basis, on the ground that no political issues were involved in this exercise to ensure wider participation.

13 Cong candidates file papers in Bhaderwah

BHADERWAH, Feb 1: Thirteen Congress candidates today filed their nominations for Bhaderwah Municipal Council in the presence of Power Minister M S Niaz.

Those who filed their papers are Asghar Ali, Rajesh Gupta, Ms Satiya Devi, Vinod Kumar, Mohd Shafi Ganai, Ms Santosh Devi, Sohil Malik, Mehraj-ud-Din Zargar, Ms Marzina Begum, Ab Rashid Ganai, Javed Iqbal Azad, Ms Seema Tabasum, Vijay Kumar from Ward Numbers 1 to 13 respectively.

Later addressing party workers Mr M S Niaz said that decision of the coalition Government to hold Municipal and local bodies elections have offered an opportunity to the people to elect their representatives to the basic institutions of democracy.

He said two years of present Government has many achievements in various aspects and spheres of governance and the process of development has been accelerated at all levels and in all areas of the State.

Mr Niaz asked the people to elect Congress candidates as party is committed to the equitable development of all regions and areas and welfare of all sections of society irrespective of caste, colour religion or region.

Mian Bashir for furthering Indo-Pak friendship, amity

JAMMU, Feb 1: Stressing that people of India and Pakistan will have to work as a bridge to create an environment of friendship, amity and cordial relations between the two countries, prominent saint and veteran Gujjar leader Mian Bashir Ahmed, urged the need to have a long lasting solution of Kashmir problem.

Mian Bashir was interacting with artists, poets and intellectuals of Pakistan, in whose honour a dinner was hosted by him. He expressed happiness over increasing diplomatic efforts to resolve bilateral issues between the two countries of South Asia and asserted that both States should encourage these positive developments so that environment of hatred and suspicion comes to an end and two countries establish an example of peace and mutual brotherhood in whole of the world.

He said Sofi-Saints, writers, poets and intellectuals are common asset and mutual pride of India and Pakistan and held that they should work for unity and harmony of both countries in the field of common interests and prepare themselves for sacrifices to achieve goal of peace and prosperity in the region.

Reacting on positive approach of man to man contacts and confidence building measures of both India and Pakistan, Mrs Madiha Gohar, leader of Pakistani Cultural Delegation told that she was highly impressed to se cordial relations in different communities and ethnic entities of J&K State. She stressed the need to have meaningful interaction between intellectuals of both countries.

Army holds free medical camp in Nowshera area

NOWSHERA, Feb 1: The 16 Guards under the aegis of Nowshera Brigade organized a medical camp at village Langer near Line of Control as a part of Operation Sadbhavana in which medical and counselling facilities were provided to inhabitants of border villages of tehsil Nowshera.

Brig Sumer Singh, Commander 80 Inf Bde inaugurated the camp in presence of Col M K Mago, Commanding Officer of the Battalion, who is organizing Medical-cum-Veterinary camps alongwith civil dignitaries and local administration.

The response was overwhelming as over 1750 people including four hundred women and 550 children were medically examined by a team of doctors including medical, surgical, Gynaeocologists, Dental surgeons and Veterinary specialists, who provided free treatment.

Brig Sumer Singh while addressing lauded the assistance rendered by local public. He gave a resume of developmental works being conducted by the Army in Nowshera.
