Pawar should intervene in Ganguly affair: Dalmiya

AHMEDABAD, Dec 19: Former cricket board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya today urged BCCI president Sharad Pawar to ensure that Sourav Ganguly be considered for selection to the Indian squad for the tour of Pakistan early next year.

"The whole nation is debating on this issue. Though selection is the prerogative of the selection committee Pawar should intervene into the matter and see that Ganguly is considered for selection for the Pakistan tour," he told reporters during the course of the second day’s play in the third Test against Sri Lanka here.

Dalmiya, whose candidate Ranbir Singh Mahendra was ousted as president after the board elections at Kolkata last month-end, is here to watch the ongoing Test as an invitee of the Gujarat Cricket Association.

"There have been several instances in the past when presidents have intervened in the selection process," Dalmiya said.

"For example, in the 1980s when Sunil Gavaskar was dropped from the team the then board president had intervened and saw that he was included in the team."

"There was another case much earlier (in 1940s) when Mushtaq Ali was dropped and the then board president Duleep Sinhji had intervened on the player’s behalf," he pointed out.

"Also when Kapil Dev was dropped (for the Kolkata Test 1984-85 against England) the then president Bishwanath Dutt had intervened," he added in support of his argument.

"Even during the time when I was secretary of the board and Raj Singh Dungarpur was the president Ganguly was made the vice-captain of the team, but Raj had spoken to the selectors and changed it so that Anil Kumble was made the vice captain," he said further.

Dalmiya said he has already written a letter to Pawar on the raging issue of Ganguly’s omission from the third Test team and the latter had replied to it saying he did not wish to intervene in the selection matters.

"One cannot force the board president to intervene (in such matters) but if he wants anything to do over the issue he should ask the selectors to consider Ganguly for the Pak tour," he concluded.

Former BCCI secretary and Dalmiya’s right-hand man S K Nair said, "I personally feel that Ganguly should have been given one more chance. It was unfortunate that he was not considered and the winning team was not retained as is the normal case." (PTI)

BCCI delegation to visit Pak soon: PCB

RAWALPINDI (Pakistan), Dec 19: A high-powered Indian cricket board delegation is expected to visit Pakistan shortly for inspecting the venues and facilities for the Test and one-day series scheduled for early next year.

A Pakistan Cricket Board official today said it expected the delegation to make its visit by the end of this year although BCCI was yet to confirm the dates.

"We have been indicated by BCCI that they intend to send a delegation for co-ordination and assessment of venues and facilities. We have not received any confirmed dates but we expect them to visit before the year ends," PCB’s director (board operations) Abbas Zaidi told PTI on the sidelines of the fourth ODI between England and Pakistan here.

The Indians are proposed to tour Pakistan between January 6 and February 20 for three Tests and five one-dayers.

Zaidi also said PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan had called Interior Ministry officials last Saturday to review security plans for the Indian cricket team’s tour.

"It was basically a co-ordination meeting in which security and other issues were reviewed. It is a high profile series and these are routine meetings. The Indians were here last year and returned satisfied as they received what we promised."

"The ongoing tour of England should also brush aside any fears on security or other arrangements," Zaidi said. (PTI)

ESPN-Star renews tie-up with Dish TV

NEW DELHI, Dec 19: Sports broadcaster ESPN-Star Sports (ESS) today said it has renewed its contract with ASC Enterprises’ DTH platform Dish TV, distribution on which would help ESS earn revenues of Rs 100 crore through subscription fee over the next two years.

The contract has been renewed with effect from February 1 next year, the two companies said.

"We are extremely bullish about the growth of DTH platform in India in the coming years and expect to earn more than 100 crore as subscription revenue over the next two years," ESS software India vice-president(sales and marketing) Sricharan Iyengar said.

Commenting on the deal, Dish TV CEO Sunil Khanna said the service had crossed the three million viewership mark and "presence of ESPN Star Sports has been one of the important driving factors in Dish TV’s penetration across India."

"ESS’ exciting sports content like PHL, FIFA World Cup 2006 and so on will continue to benefit Dish TV in increasing its sales further," added Iyengar.

The two companies will also be doing promotions for each other on their networks. While ASC will promote ESPN and Star Sports on its services at par with the other Zee group channels available on Dish TV, Dish TV will be promoted on ESPN and Star Sports.

According to the contract, ESPN and Star Sports channels will be available in the entry level pay tier called ‘Dish Welcome’. (PTI)

Pakistan’s Malik cleared of suspect bowling action

RAWALPINDI, Dec 19: Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has been cleared of a suspect bowling action reported against him last month, a senior cricket official said today.

"The report after Tests on Malik’s action cleared him and it is a reprieve for him," Pakistan Cricket Board director of operations Salim Altaf told AFP.

Malik’s bowling action was reported as "illegal" for a third time during the first Test against England at Multan last month. He was sent to Australia for Tests on his bowling action early this month.

Besides Malik, the bowling action of paceman Shabbir Ahmed was also questioned during the Multan Test, but a report on Ahmed’s action is still awaited, Altaf said.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced a new process to deal with illegal bowling actions in March this year which says that no bowler is cleared for good.

A bowler undergoes biomechanical analysis tests which are conducted by experts appointed by ICC on his questioned action and if his action is found beyond limits he is suspended from bowling at international level.

If a bowler is reported again within two years of his previous suspension he would be automatically banned from international cricket for a minimum of one year.

Off-spinner Malik was first reported in 2002 and for a second time in October 2004.

Under the new ICC rules all bowlers are allowed to straighten their bowling arms by 15 degrees. Any transgression come under illegal bowling. (AFP)

Hodge double century drives Aussies
to comfortable position

PERTH, Dec 19: Australia set South Africa a near-impossible target of 491 to win in the first cricket Test at the Waca ground here today after declaring their second innings closed just before tea on the fourth day.

Test newcomer Brad Hodge crafted an unbeaten 203 to steer the Australians to a massive 528 for 8 before captain Ricky Ponting made the declaration.

South Africa were on 85 for 2 as light stopped play with six overs scheduled to be played, leaving the tourists 406 runs adrift of the 491 runs they were set for victory.

Batsmen Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Rudolph were not out on 17 and 18 after the South African openers were removed by the home side.

Australia, who declared their second innings closed at a massive 528 for 8, were boosted by a brilliant double-century from Hodge.
