By cricketers, for cricketers, of cricketers:
BCCI under Pawar

NEW DELHI, Dec 18: Stressing that Indian cricket would not be his fiefdom, BCCI president Sharad Pawar today said he was there only to administer the board and the game in the country would be run by cricketers and professionals.

"I am here to act only as an administrator," clarified Mr Pawar while talking to commentators during the Ahmedabad Test today and added, "the matter related to cricket will be dealt by the people who know the game and have given a number of years to the cricket."

Allaying fears that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would be ‘Pawar-centric’, the Union Agriculture Minister, who pipped wily Jagmohan Dalmiya in the board’s elections recently, said, "I am going to divide the responsibilities in the board and give power to my colleagues."

Calling for the need of transparency in the functioning of the game, the Maratha strongman said preferentialism in financial matters was now a thing of past.

"All the major financial deals will be kept open for all. Take the example of TV rights...All those who have submitted tenders will be present when the bid is awarded."

Mr Pawar also revealed the plans to boost the infrastructure for the game in India.

"Fifty percent of the board’s earnings will be used to develop infrastructure including new grounds. Moreover, we will also establish at least one cricket academy in each zone." (UNI)

BCCI to go PCB way?

VADPDARA, Dec 18: Indian cricket board could take a leaf out of the book of its Pakistani counterpart in professionalising its set-up, according to BCCI chief Sharad Pawar.

Pawar, living up to his electoral promise of making the board professional, has asked Tata Consultancy Services to present a report in this regard.

Giving the example of the Pakistani Cricket Board, which has different managers for matters related to cricket, Pawar said BCCI’s functioning could also be streamlined in a similar way.

Pawar said he has asked TCs to take suggestions from former board presidents Jagmohan Dalmiya and I S Bindra since both have wide experience of running the board.

He also stressed on the need to have a cricket academy in each zones to promote young talent.

"This will help in bringing out the best talent as youngsters will get better opportunity to showcase their abilities," he told PTI from Ahmedabad.

At present there is only one academy at Bangalore.

On the contracts for the players, he said it would be finalised before the Indian team’s tour of Pakistan.

Asked about the telecast rights, Pawar said it would be done in a transparent manner and whoever made the highest bid, would get the rights.

Pawar said another of his priorities was to create infrastructure for which he has asked each cricket association to work on ground and stadium.

Pawar said he did not want cricket associations to keep money in the bank and earn interest.

"For development of the game, the board is taking several steps. After reserving an amount of the fund for players’ fees, the rest will be spent for the development of the game," he added.

The BCCI chief said he was also paying attention to resolve about 46 legal issues involving the board and was hopeful of their resolution soon. For this, Pawar said, the board was consulting lawyers.

He said he believed in decentralisation of power and transparent administration. (PTI)

Lacklustre India finish last in Champions Trophy

CHENNAI, Dec 18: India squandered a two-goal advantage to go down 4-3 to arch-rivals Pakistan for a humiliating last-place finish on their home ground in the 27th Sahara Champions Trophy hockey tournament here today.

The defeat in the playoff for 5-6 places meant India forfeited their place in the next edition of the elite six-nation tournament.

Argentina will replace India in the next edition, to be held in Spain, by virtue of their win in Champions Challenge earlier this year.

India, who had defeated the arch-rivals in the preliminary league, raised visions of a repeat performance as they rushed to a 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes of the match but slackened later, thereby failing to break the jinx of losing to Pakistan in the play-off matches since 2002.

Last year’s bronze medallists Pakistan, who were slow off the blocks, came back strongly and exploited the complacency in the Indian ranks by scoring three goals, including a penalty stroke, in the space of 15 minutes to register their second win in the tournament.

This is the third time that India have finished last, the earlier occasions being in 1985 Perth and 1989 Berlin.

Three-time winners Pakistan had been claiming the bronze in the last three editions since 2002 defeating India in the play-off matches.

Kanwalpreet Singh drew first blood for India in the second minute, converting a penalty corner while Prabhjot Singh increased the lead to 2-0 in the 14th minute.

But Muhammad Imran (33rd), Akthar Ali (38) and Muhammad Saqlain (48th penalty stroke) helped their team bounce back. Rehan Butt increased the margin in the 62nd minute.

Though India tried to stage a comeback with captain Gagan Ajit Singh scoring in the 64th minute, they ran out of steam and failed to stop Pakistan from registering their 10th win over them in the Champions Trophy.

Earlier, before the start of the match a one-minute silence was observed for the stampede victims in the city. The FIH flag was lowered to half mast.

The Indians played an inspiring game in the first 15 minutes, displaying a rare team work and putting the Pakistanis under pressure straight away.

With Prabhjot on the left, Gagan on the right and Tushar Khandekar in the centre, India made numerous moves and enjoyed most of the ball possession in the first half.

Their movement was fast with good short passes and crosses from linkmen Arjun Halappa, Vikram Pillay and Ravipal.

Pakistan did initiate a few moves with Shakeel Abbasi and Tarqi Aziz getting into the Indian circle but the defenders, led by William Zalxo, averted danger with deft play.

Perhaps taking the cue from their match against Australia, India surprised Pakistan in the very second minute off their second move.

Pakistan seemed to resume from where they left after the break as they kept probing the Indian defence, which was found wanting. In the 38th minute, Akthar Ali scored the equaliser with a low shot from the middle taking a short pass from Abbasi.

Pakistan kept up the pressure even as the Indians suddenly looked clueless. Adnan Maqsood came up with a good shot off a cross from Akthar but Chetri again brought off a good save.

Pakistan wrested the initiative in the 48th minute, scoring their third goal of the match. Umpire David gentles awarded a penalty stroke for an infringement by Kanwalpreet Singh on Rehan Butt. Pakistan captain Muhammad Saqlain was bang on target, pushing the ball to the right of Chetri.

In a counter-attack, India got their second penalty corner and almost scored but Kanwalpreet’s shot which sailed into the net was disallowed due to height.

Pakistan, who by then were holding the edge with good passes and attacking play, increased the lead to 4-2 in the 62nd minute through Rehan Butt before India brought down the margin two minutes later though, Gagan Ajit Singh slamming home with a diving effort.

In the dying moments, India made a last ditch effort with Kanwalpreet giving a long ball to Gagan on the left but in vain.

The Pakistan team was given a round of applause by the sporting crowd. (PTI)
