Billiards-Snooker Championship concludes Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 2: Chief Secretary Vijay Bakaya today distributed prizes amongst the winners and runners-up of different events in the 15th State Billiards and Snooker Championship which concluded at Billiards Hall of MA Stadium here. The prize for the Junior Snooker title of the Championship was given to Ishuk Choudhary while Omar Farooq took the runners-up trophy. Kuldeep Sharma was given the winning trophy and Nikhil Kapahi runners-up in the Junior Billiards. The winning trophy of the Senior Snooker was given to Sumesh Turki and runners-up to Umar Hamayun. Top seed cueist Kamal Rohmetra was given away the winners trophy in the Senior Billiards. In this event, Sohail Khalid was given the runners-up trophy. The special prize for having highest break of 80 points in billiards was clinched by Kuldeep Sharma. Markers in the ChampionshipSurjeet Singh Bloeria, Shanker Dass and Rakesh were also awarded mememtoes by the Chief Secretary. Before the prize distribution function, Chief Secretary Vijay Bakaya and Secretary State Sports Council Manoj Pant showed their skills on the Billiards table. Both the officers displayed good skills. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bakaya said that response to the Billiards and Snooker game has improved over the years and youngsters are coming forward in large number to play this game which not only requires good skills but proper concentration as well. He hoped that the youngsters who played well during the championship would improve their game further to compete at the national level and stressed for providing infrastructure for the game at more places so that the budding talent could be polished. President of J&K Billiards and Snooker Association Siddharth Sharma, in his address, apprised the Chief Secretary that in the Championship a total of 100 cueists including more than 20 from Kashmir Valley participated and Championship witnessed emergence of young talent like Omar Hamayun, Omar Farooq, Sumesh Turki, Ishuk Choudhary, Nikhil and Kuldeep. He expressed the hope that in the nationals to be held next month at Chennai, the young talent would prove their worth. K K Khosa, patron of the Association, Ramesh Kaul, Arun Gulati, Ajay Sharma, member Sports Council, Satish Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Sheetal Gandotra, Abhimanyu Arora, Rajan Sharma Manager Stadium and Krishan Lal Sports Officer were present on the occasion. |
Army School Samba organises Sports Meet Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 2: Army School Samba celebrated its 6th Annual Sports Meet at the school premises. Various track and field events were held during the meet in which the students of the School took part with great zest and fervor. Brigadier G S Jairam, Chairman of the School was the chief guest and Mrs Jyoti Jairam was the guest of honour. Mrs Jairam inaugurated the meet by lighting the lamp. More than 600 students took part in the various events. Gandhi House won the first place for its overall performance in sports while Master Ashwani was adjudged as the best athlete in the boys category. Ms Enokshi bagged the same in the girls category. Gandhi House was also adjudged as the overall champion house for the year. The runner-up house of the year was Tagore. During the concluding ceremony, Mrs Jairam distributed the medals and prizes among the winners and runners-up. Principal of the School Mrs Renu Rao delivered the vote of thanks. |
SP Auxiliary Police wins GOs Lawn Tennis match Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 2: SP Auxiliary Police 2nd Battalion R K Bhat today won the Lawn Tennis match in the ongoing Homeguards, Civil Defence and Auxiliary Police Sports Meet-2005. R K Bhat defeated Commandant Auxiliary Police 2nd Battalion Jammu T Phunsog in the Gazetted Officers matches in Lawn Tennis event. In the Football, Auxiliary Police First Battalion defeated Homeguards Baramulla by 4-0. In the Volleyball events first match, Auxiliary Police defeated Civil Defence Jammu by 2-0 sets. Nissar Runyal played well for Civil Defence Jammu. In the second match, Auxiliary Police 2nd Battalion defeated Homeguards Baramulla by 25-10, 25-13. Abdul Gani of Auxiliary 2nd Battalion was declared best player of the match. Homeguards and Civil Defence Rajouri/Poonch defeated Civil Defence Srinagar in the first match of the Kabaddi by 34-21. In the Tug of War event, Civil Defence Srinagar lost to Auxiliary 2nd Battalion. |

Kerala restricted at 247, J&K makes 157 for 3 Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 2: Jammu and Kashmir restricted star-studded Kerala at 247 in the first Innings in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match being played at MA Stadium, here. Against Keralas total of 247, J&K made 151 runs by losing three wickets till the end of second days game. Resuming innings at 216 for 6 this morning, Kerala was restricted at 247 runs by J&K bowlers, who bowled with proper line and length. Sadgopan Ramesh, who was batting at 50 yesterday, made a total of 64 runs and remained not-out. The second batsman of the Kerala, who was on the crease alongwith S Ramesh, contributed 40 runs. For J&K, Sameer Khajuria got five wickets while Jagtar Singh clinched three wickets. Starting its innings, J&K made a total of 151 runs by losing three wickets till the end of second days game. Kamaljeet was playing at 29 runs and captain Dhrub Mahajan at 12 . The openorsSajjad Sheikh and Vimarsh Kaw contributed 19 and 4 runs respectively while Arshad Bhat made 65 runs. Sreekumar clinched two and S Suresh one wicket for Kerala. |

Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 2: Rural Sports Mela of Indigenous Games conducted at Jhullas in Poonch district. The Mela was organised by Department of Youth Services and Sports Poonch in the discipline of Kabaddi, Volleyball, Stone Lifting, Wrist Holding, Wrestling and Musical Chairs. In these activities as many as 200 school boys and 100 vigorous and talented players of local clubs from remote and hilly areas participated. Headmaster Government High School Jhullas Abdul Rehman was the chief guest in the final matches of each activity and Mangat Ram Sharma, DYSSO Poonch was the presiding officer. In Kabaddi Senior Boys, H/S Khanater defeated HS Jhullas by 40-36 points while in the junior Kabaddi, MS Dharati defeated MS Kanuyian by 26-25 points. In the Volleyball match, Locl Club Jhullas defeated HS Jhullas in straight three sets while in the Junior Volleyball MS Kanuyian defeated MS Dakhna by 2-1. In the Wrist Holding, Mukhtar Ahmed of Local Clubs Jhullas, Mohd Shakeel of HS Jhullas and Shokatr Hussain of MS Dhara Dullain bagged first, second and third prizes respectively. In Musical Chairs, Tanveer Ahmed of HS Kanuyian stood first. Jaswinder Kour, Incharge Activity and Hardev Singh PEM were also present during the final matches. |

It is pertinent to mention here that the competators, who will be selected by the selection committee, will represent the J&K State in the forthcoming school nationals. JKP, Jammu Distt win Basketball matches Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 2: Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) and Jammu District won their respective matches in the boys and girls category in the ongoing 3rd Varun Sharma Memorial Basketball Tournament. In the boys category, JKP defeated Nagbani School by 103-32 points. Right from the beginning, the match was dominated by JKP with its players leaving no opportunity to make scores. For the winning team, Harpreet was the highest scorer followed by Vikas and Gharu Ram. While Harpreet made 20 points, Vikas and Gharu Ram made 15 and 11 points respectively. For the losing team, Sumeet made 10 points, Dikshit 6 and Abhiskeh 9 points. The match was officiated by Satish Chopra and Mohammad Shafi under the supervision of SAI Coach Rajinder Magotra. In the girls category, Jammu District defeated Nagbani School by 28-25. Nisha Sharma, Aditi Sudan and Ankita Singh were the main scorers for the Jammu District while Megha, Nidhi and Sheetal were the main scorers for Nagbani School. The final of the Championship will be held at Mini-Stadium Parade Ground Jammu on December 5. MLA East Yogesh Sawhney will be the chief guest and Secretary J&K State Sports Council Manoj Pant will preside over the function. |
