Tendulkar says he is not rushing himself NAGPUR, Oct 24: Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar today said he was not rushing his comeback to cricket and that with more than a decades experience, he was prepared to face all kinds of challenge the game could throw at him. "I dont think I am rushing myself. I have played 115 Tests, after that you have to be prepared to face all sorts of problems and all kinds of obstacles," Tendulkar said ahead of the third cricket Test against Australia beginning here on Tuesday. The 31-year old record breaking batsman is returning to action from a 75-day break due to an elbow injury that forced him to miss three one-day competitions including the ICC Champions Trophy last month as well as the first two tests of the ongoing series. Tendulkar, who has not played a match since the Asia Cup final in Sri Lanka in August, makes his return as India trail 1-0 in the four-Test series and preserve the 35-year old unbeaten record against the Aussies at home. He said he was well fully aware of the task up against him. "I have prepared myself. I have played against Australia and I have played against these bowlers. I know what to expect from them," he said. "Unfortunately, there was no match in between (after the second Test in Chennai). I have to be happy with my net practice," Tendulkar said after taking part in a full net session with his teammates during which which he was seen hitting the ball hard. "It went well (todays net session). I have been having intense sessions over the last three-four days. They were pretty hard ones. My body has responded quite nicely," he said. "I am very happy to make the comeback. It has been a difficult time. It was extremely difficult to be sitting in the dressing room, when you want to be out there in the middle. "Unfortunately that did not happen. But I am prepared now to go out and try my best," he said. The master batsman admitted that he would not be hundred percent fit immediately. "It is not going to be normal in the near future. The doctors have said I will face some stiffness. That is fine. It is normal for anyone," he said. "I know it is going to take some time. It is something that is not going to get better overnight." "After I spend some time in the middle, muscles which are developed because of batting will get strengthened." "That is what I have been trying to do over the last four-five days. It has shaped up pretty well." (AGENCIES) |
Lanka records emphatic 201-run win over Pak FAISALABAD, Oct 24: Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath claimed four wickets today as Sri Lanka completed an emphatic 201-run first cricket Test win over Pakistan, midway into the afternoon session on the fifth and final day. Herath perfectly filled the place of Sri Lankas injured star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan as Pakistan was dismissed for 216 when last man Shoaib Akhtar was stumped by Kaluwitharana. Herath finished the match with seven wickets for 145 runs. Sri Lanka set huge 418-run target for Pakistan after amassing 438 in its second innings, highlighted by Sanath Jayasuriyas magnificent 253 yesterday. Pakistan got a 21-run first innings lead after it made 264 in reply to Sri Lankas first innings total of 243. Shoaib Malik made a career-best 59 but got little support from the other end as Herath bowled consistently with a field of four close in fielders around the Pakistan batsmen. Malik brought up his half century with three successive boundaries off Dilhara Fernando (4-77), who had broken the Pakistan top batting order in the second innings with four wickets yesterday evening. Mohammad Sami, nursing a groin muscle injury, was run out for five before Akhtar delayed the inevitable with a quick 12, which included a six off Herath. It was Sri Lankas sixth Test win at Pakistan in the last nine Test matches, which include 2-1 series wins in 1995-1996 and 1999-2000 along with a victory in the Asian Test championship final in Lahore two years ago. Herath claimed two wickets in as many balls in the first session and removed Yousuf Youhana (44) and Abdul Razzaq off successive deliveries as Pakistan went for lunch at a precarious 170 for 7 - trailing by a massive 247 runs. Herath bowled a marathon spell of 13 overs in two hours from the pavillion end and constricted the Pakistan batsmen with a consistent line and length. Resuming at the overnight score of 114 for four, Youhana and Malik put on 31 runs in the first hour before Herath struck in his ninth over of the day. Youhana, who pulled Herath for two boundaries, was out LBW and Razzaq departed in similar fashion. Moin Khan averted the hat-trick, but got a big edge off paceman Chaminda Vaas in the next over as Pakistan lost three wickets in space of 14 deliveries and moved closer to defeat. The second match of the two-Test series begins in southern city of Karachi from October 28. (AP) |
Irfan should concentrate only on bowling: Wasim Akram BANGALORE, Oct 24: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram today advised Indian medium pacer Irfan Pathan to concentrate on his bowling and not to worry much about batting. Talking to newsmen here, former Pakistan speedstar said, "Pathan should realise that he is a bowler who can bat and so should concentrate on bowling." But Akram, who is the only bowler in the world to have captured more than 400 wickets in Test and one-day cricket, hastened to add that the Boarda seamer has the talent and he can become a top all-rounder if he works hard". Pathan has got the talent and he has got runs against Australia, Akram said referring to Pathans batting against Australia in the first two Test matches at Bangalore and Chennai recently. "But again, he (Pathan) should know that he is a bowler who can also bat, he should concentrate on that. It is hard-work to be an all-rounder now-a-days as we play so much cricket. All-rounder can sort of, at times, get tired. You have to bowl and bat at number seven," he added. Akram, who was here as part of the talent hunt for a presenter for ESPN Star Sports, for which he is a commentator, agreed with a questioner that there is too much hype about Pathan. "Yes, this (hype) had to happen", he said. Akram said that he had said Pathan last year in Australia that "if he bowled well, money and attention are bound to follow him given his personality." "It is up to him to handle that (spot-light), we cannot tell media not to hype him because that is their job," he added. (UNI) |

Inzamam blames batsmen for defeat FAISALABAD (Pakistan), Oct 24: Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq blamed his batsmen today for their huge 201-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the first Test. "None of the batsmen played like one should play in a Test match," he told reporters. "We all got out to irresponsible shots. We have very little time to shape up and take more responsibility in the second Test." Inzamam said there had been no excuse on a pitch which was good for batting. "We have played a lot of one-day internationals and it affected our batting in this Test. But to win the next test we have to give our bowlers at least 400 runs to bowl with," he said. He also made it clear there would be changes for the final match in the two-Test series which starts in Karachi on Thursday. The emphasis would be put on picking specialist players instead of all rounders. "The only reason we went into this match with two all rounders (Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Malik) was because they were in good form. I thought we played with our best side," he said. (AGENCIES) . |
