PDP thanks Batmaloo, Pahalgam electorate Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Oct. 16: The Peoples Democratic Party today thanked the electorate of Batamaloo and Pahalgam constituencies for reposing their faith and trust in its policies by electing the party candidates in the just concluded bye-elections. The party described the results as an eye opener for the National Conference and its leaders and a clear-cut mandate against its policies of sentimental exploitation of the people. In a statement the PDP spokesman said the overwhelming mandate the party candidates have got is not only the endorsement of the policies of the party but also a rejection of the politics of exploitation practiced by National Conference. He said the electorate in both the constituencies has rejected the hollow sloganeering and voted for development and progress. He said the verdict was a rebuff to the hollow claims of popularity by the National Conference and its leadership. The spokesman lambasted the National Conference for raising the bogey of rigging in the bye-elections and said that the party feels hard to digest its defeat. He said a party that has set unparalleled records of rigging and electoral bungling in Jammu and Kashmir was only befooling itself by crying hoarse about electoral malpractices. The effort, he said, was a face-saving and an attempt to divert attention from the dressing down given to it by the electorate. He said the Election Commission of India found none of the allegations made by the party true. The investigations by the EC punctured the balloon of the NC allegations, he added. The spokesman accused the National Conference of always playing the spoilsport and hampering the smooth growth and development of democratic institutions in the State. The spokesman said that PDP would continue with its people centric and development oriented policies. He said the party has always considered people as the real fountainhead of power unlike the National Conference where peoples aspirations were sacrificed for power. He said the party would continue with the policies of providing succor to the deprived masses of the state. |

SMAJ clears doubts among people about Dussehra Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 16: A meeting of executive body of Society for Meaningful Administration of Justice (SMAJ) today took stock of the situation arising out of the controversy raised by learned scholars of Vedic Scriptures, Sanskrit and Astrology that Dussehra falls on October 22 and not on 23rd of this month. Members were apprehensive of the move of these scholars to create division and confusion among masses through a news item in a section of Press. President SMAJ Mr R Khajuria while expressing his views on the issue raised three points in rebuttal to the contentions of the erudite of the subject. First of all the question of "Panchaks" consideration is irrelevant, as the effigy burning is only symbolic ritual and has no religious sanctity. I fact this ritual has no positive impact. Even taking "Panchak" consideration same scholar recommend, putting small symbolic "dolls" with a person who dies in Panchaks and these are cremated along with the body. Regarding consideration of rising "Tithi", it was strange that scholars who claim that 10th Tithi ends in the morning and 22/11th Tithi starts so it cannot be Dussehra, but the same scholars ordained in the case of Janam Ashtami this year, when they held that Ashtami, though for a short while was falling on 7th September and as such Krishan Janam Ashtami fell on September 7 and not on August 6, when the rising Tithi was Saptami at Sun rise but for whole night Ashtami prevailed. Again when a Government calendar is framed to declare holidays, experts from all religions are consulted by the Government. The SMAJ has appealed the public to ignore such off hand remarks, even by the scholars, while it requested the doyens of Sanskrit and astrology to come out clear on any contentious issues regarding festivals much in advance to avoid any confusion in the mind of a man on the street.
