India on the brink of one of their biggest defeats

BANGALORE, Oct 9: India were on the brink of one of their biggest Test defeats after yet another batting collapse put Australia on course for a comprehensive victory in the first cricket Test here today.

Chasing a record target of 457 on a wearing track, the home team was gasping at an embarrassing 105 for six at close on the penultimate day, still trailing by 351 runs with just four wickets in hand.

Barring Rahul Dravid who waged a lone battle, none of the other Indian batsmen showed any application on a difficult track at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on a dramatic day’s play which saw as many as 12 wickets fall.

Dravid was batting on a gritty 47 alongwith Irfan Pathan (7) with India still in danger of suffering their biggest defeat in Test history — a margin of 329 runs against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in 1996-97.

The Indian batting disintegrated under the weight of a huge target. Whatever hopes one had of Sourav Ganguly’s men making amends for the first innings debacle evaporated in thin air with the dismissal of Virender Sehwag for zero.

Umpire Billy Bowden’s decision to rule him leg before might have been contentious, as TV replays showed a thick inside edge, but Sehwag’s mouthing of the umpire — sure to invite penal action — only reflected the frustration of a batsman woefully out of form.

To add injury to insult was the run out of the captain although Dravid might have to share a fair bit of the blame as he failed to respond to Ganguly’s call in time and leaving him little time to get back to his crease.

Shane Warne was one wicket away from equalling Muttiah Muralitharan’s world record tally of 532 after having V V S Laxman out for the second time in the match.

But it was the impeccable line and length of Glenn McGrath that dismantled the Indian top order.

The 34-year old new South Wales seamer had an opening spell figures of 5-4-1-1, and returned to break the fifth wicket stand between Dravid and Yuvraj Singh by inducing a faint edge of the latter’s bat. McGrath ended the day with two for nine from 12 overs.

Sehwag lasted seven balls before McGrath rapped him on the pads.

Aakash Chopra (5) had a lucky escape early on when an awkwardly rising delivery from Jason Gillespie bounced off the shoulder of his bat but fell out of Matthew Hayden’s reach in the slip cordon.

But the right hander lasted just a little longer, falling leg before to the same bowler in the fourth over.

Then followed Ganguly’s run out before Warne delivered the killer blow when his flipper caught Laxman (3) plumb in front.

Yuvraj Singh showed glimpses of his class as he picked warne with precision. But his tendency to poke at deliveries away from the body landed him in trouble once again.

McGrath set up the dismissal with a plan only a stalwart of his calibre can, feeding him out side the off before bowling one just that much closer to induce the edge.

In the meantime, Dravid was sustaining India’s hopes but living dangerously. He was having trouble against Warne and when on 14 a faint edge tipped Gilchrist’s gloves before beating the first slip fielder to third man boundary.

But ‘the wall’ soon acquired the solidity that had come to personify his innings and began to time his shots well.

But with four wickets to claim and one full day’s remaining, only the weather gods can save India.

The Chinnaswamy Stadium then had proved once again lucky for the visitors and a grave yard for the hosts.

Earlier, Australia were all out for 228 with Harbhajan Singh claiming his 13th career five-wicket haul.

It was also the sixth successive occasion the offie had claimed five wicket in an innings against the Aussies on home soil.

The Australian innings also witnessed Gillespie walking although Steve Bucknor turned down an appeal for bat-pad catch off Harbhajan.

The turbanator started the day by dismissing first innings centurion Michael Clarke and the well-set Damien Martyn to put the skids under the Aussies.

Both Clarke (17) and Martyn (45) fell while tyring to get on top of Harbhajan. The former groped forward in an effort to negotiate the spin but ended up bat-padding to Aakash Chopra at short leg.

Martyn had done well against the off spinner and had carefully avoided the fate of Clarke until he stepped out and played an uppish flick for a simple catch to substitute Mohammad Kaif at short midwicket.

Till that moment, India had conceded only 20 runs in 15 overs. But Shane Warne changed the complexion of the game a whirlwind knock of 31 from 49 balls with five fours.

In the very first over he faced Harbhajan, Warne swept the turbanator’s off break to square leg boundary with devastating effect. One more similar sweep, and the offie went back on the defensive.

Anil Kumble, after a disappointing spell, managed to turn one big enough to force a bat-pad catch of Gilchrist.

Warne fell to Harbhajan with Yuvraj Singh coming up with a sharp catch at short leg. (PTI)

Warne close to upstaging Murali’s world record

BANGALORE, Oct 9: Spin wizard Shane Warne was tantalisingly close to upstaging Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan as the top wickettaker in the world after the fourth day’s play in the first cricket Test against India here.

The Australian leg spinner took two wickets in India’s second innings to take his tally to 531, just one short of equalling Muralitharan’s record.

Warne, who came into the series needing six wickets to break his rival’s record, has already taken four wickets in the match.

With Australia needing four more wickets on the final day tomorrow, warne has the opportunity to achieve the milestone in this Test itself.

Sehwag summoned for disciplinary hearing

BANGALORE, Oct 9: Opener Virender Sehwag was today summoned for a disciplinary hearing by ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle on charges of misconduct on the fourth day of the first cricket Test against Australia here.

Sehwag exchanged words with umpire Billy Bowden of New Zealand after he ruled him out leg before for a duck against paceman Glenn McGrath during India’s second innings.

Television replays showed Sehwag had edged the ball on to his pad.

Madugalle summoned the batsman for a hearing after the umpires reported the incident to him.

The Sri Lankan said he had conducted the hearing, which was also attended by Indian coach John Wright, after close of play.

The match referee said he would announce his verdict tomorrow.

Madugulle said normally it is the concerned cricket board which announces the verdict, but because of legal issues involving BCCI, he would make the announcement himself. (PTI)

Last chance for India to salvage some pride

HYDERABAD, Oct 9: Having already lost the Friendship Hockey series 1-4, India will now play for pride and try to finish their campaign on a winning note in the last match against Pakistan to be played under floodlights here tomorrow.

The conditions at the Gachibowli Complex here will be more ideal for a game of hockey tomorrow as against the matches so far which have been played in mid-afternoon under a blazing sun.

Indians are certainly a dejected lot, their misery being compounded by the freak injury to their inspirational captain Dilip Tirkey who is virtually ruled out of the last match also.

Tirkey was forced to watch the action from the sidelines following a blow he took on the chin in the opening match of the Indian leg at Delhi which resulted in a hairline fracture.

Although the team management has admitted that Tirkey’s absence forced it to change their game plans in Chandigarh and Amritsar, it declined to make it as an excuse for the team’s failure to win matches.

"Tirkey’s absence is a big blow as he was central to our plan of things. But that should not be an excuse. We got so many chances to score in the last two matches but failed to take advantage of those. That mattered in the end," assistant coach Jagbir Singh said.

With the series under their belt, Pakistan are likely to experiment in tomorrow’s games including fielding a few rookie players to test them ahead of December’s Champions Trophy.

However, Pakistan captain Waseem Ahmed has said his team would not take the last rubber lightly.

"We are happy to win the series with one match to go. But that does not mean that we will be taking the last game lightly," he said.

"We would field a few new players so that they can gain some experience. With the Champions Trophy coming, we want to have a bigger player pool and this series is our last chance towards achieving that," he added.

The teams are likely to have some practice at the hockey complex and the match, despite being of academic interest, has evoked much response in general public.

The State Hockey Association has made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the game and security measures have also been beefed up in and around the Gachibowli Sports Complex, where the match begins at 8.00 pm.

The venue will be hosting an Indo-Pak tie for the third time having already staged clashes between the arch-rivals last year when both the sides played each other twice in the Afro-Asian Games. (AGENCIES)

Earlier, batting first, Invest Gain set a target of 96 runs for the loss of six wickets in the allotted 10 overs, which, in reply, Fighter XI could not chase and exhausted their quota of 10 overs for 84 runs losing six wickets.

It was because of the brilliant innings of 65 runs (7x4, 4x6) by Vikas Bakshi that Invest Gain was able to set a competitive target as the rest of the batsmen could not touch the double figure mark. Balowria was most successful bowler from Fighter XI with four wickets while Ashwani and Anshul took two and one respectively.

Krishan Lal also played valuable innings of 24 for VCC while no other batsman could touch the double figure mark. Raman Dutta claimed four wickets for SCC giving away 17 runs in 4.2 overs. MAM College earned highest nine points to claim the overall championship trophy.

Unfortunately, Degree College Udhampur boys could not participate in wrestling competitions because of their delayed arrival at the venue by one day. The two-day competitions, which were started yesterday had to complete today.

But sadly, due to the lack of knowledge on part of the Physical Director, Udhampur regarding date, as told by the team members, the college could not participate, thereby losing their chance of excelling in these competitions. Had they won in inter-college, they would have been selected for the inter-University tournament.

The detailed results: 55 kg: Ravinder Singh, Degree College, Kathua, Ist; Mushtaq Ahmed, Degree College, Rajouri, 2nd and Mohan Singh, GGM Science College, third. 60 kg: Mohd Jahangir, Degree College, Rajouri, Ist; Raj Singh, Degree College, Kathua, 2nd and Mulkh Raj, MAM College, third. 66 kg: Sahil Sharma, Music and Fine Arts, Ist; Chhateshwar, Science College, 2nd and Sandeep Singh, Dogra Law College, third. 74 kg: Sunil Kumar, MAM, Ist; Matloop Salim, Dogra Law College, 2nd and Dev Raj, Degree College, Kathua, third. 84 kg: Beesham Jalotra, PG, Ist; Prithvi Raj Dogra, Dogra Law College, 2nd and Arun Kumar, SPMR College of Commerce, third. 96 kg: Rajinder Singh, SPMR College of Commerce, Ist; Aakash Kumar, MAM, 2nd and Gourav Sharma, Dogra Law College, third. 120 kg: Amit Manhas, MAM, Ist; Shiv Parshad, Science College, 2nd and Naresh Kumar, Commerce College, third.

JAMMU: Semi-finals line-up has been drawn in the inter-college men’s Kabaddi competitions at University ground here today. Teams which have entered into the last four stage were PG Departments, Degree College Udhampur, Pinther College and Degree College Poonch.

Earlier, in the quarter-finals played today, PG Departments defeated Degree College Kathua 52-34 and Degree College Udhampur outplayed Degree College Rajouri 39-21. In other quarterfinal competitions, Pinther College downed GGM Science College 38-29 and Degree College Poonch trounced Government MAM College 55-21.

However, the semi-finals and finals have been postponed for the next dates because the Jammu University team has to leave for the inter-university tournament tomorrow.

According to Assistant Director, Physical Education, M M Sharma that they received the invitation for the inter-university competitions, which have been pre-poned, on a short notice that too when inter-college competitions were already scheduled.

Harbhajan says team missing Tendulkar badly

BANGALORE, Oct 9: Harbhajan Singh feels the absence of Sachin Tendulkar coupled with some poor batting were mainly responsible for India’s poor show in the first cricket Test against Australia here.

"In batting, we have not been as good as we had been earlier. We really need to have a talk about it — what needs to be done," Harbhajan, who picked an 11-wicket haul in the match, told reporters after the day’s play.

"First innings lead was very crucial. We gave them too many runs and we didn’t bat good enough. In the second innings we bowled a much better line but still batting was a disappointment," he said.

"Also, Sachin is not there. Obviously, he is a great batsman. When he comes (back into the team) it will be a different side. He makes a huge difference to the team. He’s the kind of guy who can make 100-200 whatever the wicket you are playing on," said the off-spinner.

Harbhajan said the team was looking forward to the return of Tendulkar, recuperating from a tennis elbow, in the second Test at Chennai.

"He (Tendulkar) is very confident about the Chennai Test. It will be great to have him back, he could score some big runs for us and bowl some leg spin and googlies as well to take a few wickets."

The Punjab spinner was nevertheless confident of a turnaround by his side in the series.

"It’s a long series and we have to turn it around at some stage and the kind of team we have I am sure we can do that. The last time they were here, we lost the first Test at Mumbai but we came back really hard."

"I am sure guys are confident of doing that. We just have to think about it — where are we going wrong and take the positives out of this match. We will play much better cricket in future," Harbhajan said.

On a couple of debatable umpiring decisions, he said he could not comment on this issue. "We had a couple of bad decisions. But it’s part of the game, sometimes it happens. They are good umpires, we can’t say anything about it, not me at least."

Talking about his individual performance, he said he just tries to give his best always. "Sometimes, I bowl well and sometimes I go for runs, but my best is yet to come." (PTI)

Mohan "prevented" from taking charge

MUMBAI, Oct 8: High Court appointed Interim Administrator of the cricket board justice (Retd) S Mohan could not take charge today after being greeted by knocked doors at the BCCI head office here.

Mohan, who reached the BCCI office here this morning following the Madras High Court order yesterday restraining the newly-elected office bearers of BCCI from functioning, WCS "shocked" to see the locked doors.

"I am very shocked. I has come here out of respect for the High Court order and this is the treatment that I get," said Mohan.

"It is a very sorry state of affairs. I had come to take over as Interim Administrator as per the order of the High Court but I have been prevented from doing so," he said.

Asked whether the board had been informed about his arrival, he said "they had all been informed through the High Court order."

Mohan said that he would not interfere in cricketing matters of the board like team selections.

"I won’t interfere with the game of cricket at all. I will write to everybody concerned — state associations, banks and committees and say that I have taken over as Interim Administrator as per the High Court order."

Asked whether he would appoint an ad hoc committee, he said, "I may have to. But I don’t intend to interfere in the running of cricket." (AGENCIES)

Lanka rout Zimbabwe in tri-series

RAWALPINDI (Pakistan), Oct 9: Sri Lanka crushed Zimbabwe by seven wickets here today to virtually guarantee their place in the final of the triangular series against hosts Pakistan.

The Sri Lankans skittled the Zimbabweans for 104 and then romped home for 108-3 in just over 18 overs to leave the Africans needing a miracle if they are to progress to the October 16 final.

Zimbabwe, who have just one point from three matches, now must pull off an unlikely victory with a bonus point against Sri Lanka on Monday.

They must also hope Pakistan beat Sri Lanka with a bonus point when the two teams meet in their last league match in Lahore on October 14, to have any chance of making the final.

Sri Lanka had notched 56 by lunch, losing Saman Jayantha for 21.

After the interval, Sanath Jayasuriya hit Chigumbura for a six and two boundaries but the Zimbabwean avenged the assault by bowling Jayasuriya off the fourth delivery for 40.

Tillakaratne Dilshan, promoted to gain some practice, hit the winning boundary to finish at 26 not out.

Earlier Sri Lanka’s four-pronged pace attack shared two wickets apiece while leg-spinner Upul Chandana returned with best figures of 3-15 as the africans collapsed in just 33 overs.

Stuart Matsikenyeri with 37 and Dion Ebrahim with 24 not out offered some resistance in an otherwise disappointing batting display. (AGENCIES)
